Frame of reference should be Thai prices,, you ARE in Thailand.
When I go to a nice bar in Saigon I don't gert all excited about paying 120,000 Dong ( US 8 ) for a beer because it would cost me more in Aus,, no I think 120,000, I know I can get it at a similiar bar down the road for 45,000 Dong and I could even go to a Beer hoi bar ( no hoi does not mean the same in Vietnamese) and get waited on personally and buy fresh brewed beer for around 40,000 Dong a glass.
If Ice is free in iceland do they expect free ice in Thailand?
Reference point should always be what is the norm for the place you are in/at.

After my recent trip I tried the Somboon on Ratchada and also Ban Klang Nam. In taste they are pretty much equal as well as the service in both were extremely good. So good I was kind of surprised. Somboon is much closer to and in the city where Ban Klang Nam is a little more off and more of a romantic type restaurant than Somboon.

Somboon, over priced for the quality. You could do FAR worse,, but if you want quality go to " if it swims we have it",,,I think Suk 38 ?

For French food you must try the following two, very expensive, but extremely good ( would have at least 1 Michelin star in Europe) restaurants:
1. Le Normandie in the Oriental hotel (very formal)
2. Le Beaulieu in the Sofitel serviced aprtments on Suk. soi 19 ( casual)
You won't find better in BKK
