I know its too late to post this as the topic is almost dead since july 16 or so but still people looking for real indian food should try silom soi 11. Entering the soi about 50 mtrs. on the left side you will find one small restaurant -TamilNadu Restaurant. The food here is real indian stuff unlike other indian restaurant which smells a lot and has a peculiar taste. Food here is really tasty specially Lamb curry (Mutton Masala), Chicken Curry and Masala. Price also affordable. Vegetarian food below average and No alcohol available. Give it a try!

Haam Sup ,
As mentioned by KamaSutra the Tamil Nad Cafe has some very delicious Indian food .
However for those who are not aware it should be mentioned that there are numerous very distinctive types of Indian food . There are 26 or so States & Union Territories in India and each one of them has a very distinctive cuisine ( in fact there are even numerous variations within each State ).
Most of the Indian Restaurants in Bangkok concentrate on the North Indian dishes mainly because the bulk of Indian ex-pats here are from North India . At these Restaurants you will find dishes like Chicken Tikka , Chicken Butter Masala , Nan , Butter Nan , Biriyani , Rogan Josh , etc .
The Tamil Nad Cafe concentrates on food from the Southern State of Tamil Nad - so here you will find Dosas , Vadais , Iddlies , Puris , etc. and dishes like Chicken 65 ( pieces of chicken fried in a tangy marinate ) , Chicken Masala/ Curry , Mutton Masala / Curry , Brain Masala ( absolutely delicious and something you will rarely find elsewhere in Bangkok ) , parathas ( which are soft delicious rotis ) , Meals ( which consist of 6 or 7 vegetable preparations served in small dishes to be eaten with puris or Chappattis followed by rice to be eaten with the vegetables and rasam /curd/pickles/papadam ).
However I should caution you that the set-up , decor & cleanliness of Tamil Nad Cafe leaves something to be desired .

I rather like Maharaja's at the top of Soi 8 - biggish place, well patronised by the local Indian tailors & their families.

Friends (mainly from London) I've taken there give it mixed reviews. The flavours certainly differ from 'Anglo-Indian' (altho' most of the dishes are the same) but I still find the food delicious. A wee bit on the pricey side for BKK, though.

For southern Indian fare (esp. for those expats from from Malaysia/Singapore who want something that reminds them of home) try Komala Villas in Sukumvit Soi 22 next to Bei Otto.

Singapore-based chain (those that have visited Serangoon Rd will recognise the name) - vegetarian Southern Indian fare - fast food setup - cheap and good. Strangely all the TGs I've brought there hate the food but Malaysians (and to a much lesser extent the Singaporean Chinese) and all lovers of Southern Indian food will like it. Slurp slurp Rava Masala Thosai and piping hot Resam!

Arramsey,

Growing up in LA, I had the good fortune to try at least five or six different types of Indian food.  I LOVE dosa, and other southern dishes, and (I hope this doesn't offend) I REALLY like Bengali food...

Thanks for the great tips.  The decor and cleanliness isn't a problem, since I have seen the kitchens of supposedly 'clean' restaurants all over the planet...

The most recent bad experience was in Chaweng, Koh Samui, at an Indian restaurant on the main street - I got a piece of metal from a scrubbing pad in my vindaloo! Cut my tongue all to hell!  The food was OK, though

thanks again,
haam sup

Walking (as opposed to staggering) down Sukhumvit last night I noticed for the first time next to Country Road II on Soi 19 (I think...I usually taxi between Nana and Cowboy) and resturant called Dos King or Dosa something. As Masala Dosa's are one of my favourites, anyone ever tried it?...or shall I just stick with Malaysian Auntie?
