The Big One
I tried out Ten-Sui on Sukhumvit Soi 16, near Somerset Lake Point. Great authentic food and ambience, and very nice reasonably priced lunch specials. Give it a try!

I just tried out Ten-Sui for dinner and it was really good. I am a very picky eater in regards to Japanese food, however I was very impressed by both the food and the ambiance of the place. Have to agree that the lunch menu is a super bargain (I wish I had gone to lunch here!). It isn't cheap for lunch expect at least 500+ for lunch. I spent 2,300baht (1 person after some discount) for the Kaiseki dinner. It is a very nice place, gorgeous preparation and all that, typical of Japanese cuisine. I hope they keep this quality up, since it will become my favorite eatery if they keep it up.

Okonomiyaki – the infamous ‘Japanese pizza’; not sure about MBK (I rarely go there) but I think I have seen it on occasion in the supermarket/ food court area in the Emporium. And possibly in the supermarket/ food court area on central – chit lom. Both of these places have various Japanese ‘street food’ from time to time.

I would also image there is some place up on soi 31 or soi 33 that makes it as well, but I typically head up that way for ramen and don’t pay much attention to what else is on hand.

A friend told me about an a Japanese restaurant by the name of Kizahashi, Sukhumvit soi 26, but I have never been there so can not vouch for it personally.

I think there is a place on Ekamai Road (Sukhumvit 63) in the group of shops at the Ekamai end of Ekamai Soi 10.

I know about Kizahashi in soi26.
What I prefer for try it (i never eat before) is a place where you can cook in the table or at least near in the counter, real japanese style.

I think that i'll go to Kizahashi at the end.

The Japanese culinary attack
==================

Forget the terms ''sushi'', ''sashimi'', ''shabu shabu'' and ''ramen'', which are among the first food vocabulary toddlers in Bangkok recognise.

Tongue-twisting words like ''yakiniku'', ''teppanyaki'', ''okonomiyaki'' and ''takoyaki'' have become commonly used jargon at restaurants, offices, schools and even households and on the local media in the City of Angels.

Of course, that hasn't happen for no reason. The multiplication of Japanese restaurants in Bangkok over the past 12 months _ there are now more than 100 in the metro area alone, I believe _ has probably made Bangkokians more fluent when it comes to talking about this foreign food.

It is a result of an increasing sophistication about, and greater demand for, Japanese food by urban gastronomes who, for example, now know the differences between ramen from Sapporo and from Tokyo and will settle for no less than Kobe beef and kurobuta pork when it comes to teppanyaki steak dining.

More good evidence of this gastro incursion is the increasing number of yakiniku restaurants. No matter how many of them are in Bangkok at the moment, these DIY barbecue joints never appear to lack grilled meat-lovers. Such non-stop favour has led to the openings of yakiniku buffet restaurants where resolute diners are offered free flows of meat and seafood for about 350-500 baht per person. Considered among meat-buffs as a place for ''the real deal'', some of them are fully packed throughout the business day, with waiting lists that stretch as far as two months.

Japanese-style sukiyaki and shabu shabu buffet restaurants, too, continued to prosper in 2010. The long queues outside each outlet show no signs of getting shorter.

As the popularity of Japanese cuisine increases, you'll also easily find tonkatsu (battered and deep-fried pork cutlet), teppanyaki (grilled meat on skewers), okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza) and ramen (Japanese-style noodle soup), which were some of the least popular items on the menu at a typical Japanese joint a few years back, as main offers at many specialty restaurants today. Most of them are located at K-Village and the Nihonmachi complex on Sukhumvit Soi 26 and along the Thong Lor strip.

In the Mood for Love @ Sukhumvit Soi 36
==========================

The spacious, length-wise sushi bistro with a romantic inspiration from Wong Kar-Wai's 2000 film, In the Mood For Love, is artistically decked out in a style that evokes a sense of Hong Kong in the 1960s.

The restaurant's menu features the likes of sushi, sashimi, grilled items, tempura and donburi (rice-bowl dishes). Its chef, who also co-owns the restaurant, has many years of experience working in a sushi joint in Chicago.

Being here, you can't miss sampling sushi rolls, the restaurant's specialty. The Sweet 16 (400 baht), one of its signature creations, presents rice rolls filled with spicy tuna, grilled eel, avocado and garnished with shrimp roe and fresh strawberry. This modern translation of Japanese maki offered an innovative profile of flavours _ an unusual blend of ocean zest, refreshingly fruity taste and sweet and salty sauce.

Also highly recommended is Guilty But Happy (360 baht). This simple-looking roll is prepared with shrimp tempura, preserved tofu, cream cheese, scallion, mayonnaise and special sauce to offer a heavenly, all-in-one mouthfeel.

Because the restaurant uses only the best grade fish available in the market, it's a good idea to try its omakase, or chef's special, sushi set (700 baht). Arriving on a wooden tray are six pieces of neatly executed sushi to be eaten in a particular order for the best taste result.

For main entree, the restaurant recommendes gindara saikyo yaki, or charcoal grilled miso-marinated gindara fish (420 baht), which offers firm and supple flavourful meat as well as a pleasant smoky fragrance.

Naanban-style deep-fried chicken (220 baht) may look unexciting but it is proved to be a real palate pleaser.

Self-parking can be a hassle, so use the free valet service or public transport.

In the Mood for Love
Sukhumvit Soi 36

Tel 02-661-5076

Open: Daily for dinner, 5:30pm-midnight

Parking: Along the street on the opposite sub-soi and valet service

Credit cards: Most accepted
