HaamSup ,
Sorry for my delayed response - I just never saw this Thread for quite some time .
Although I did caution on the cleanliness and hygene at Tamil Nad Cafe , they are not so bad as to have metal pieces in the food .
In fact I think that I may have done them a disservice - because their cleanliness and hygene is really not that bad - it's just not up to 5 star standards . The only reason I added those words of caution was because most of the members on this Board appear to be from Western countries where they are used to highly sanitised conditions .
BUT - the food at TamilNad Cafe is absolutely delicious and must be tried .

Yurune ,
(NOTE : If you were walking past DOSA KING on the 7th. at around 9p.m. you would have seen me at the table near the front glass window gorging myself on the most scrumptious Buter Massala Dosa ) .
If you have a liking for Dosas , then the Dosa King is the place to try .
It is run by a husband and wife team who set the atmosphere with their very hospitable demeanour - personally welcoming each guest and spending some time with each guest during the course of the meal . They are from Mangalore which is on the West Coast of India and this may explain their pleasant attitude . But then again I also hail from Mangalore - so I guess that does not explain anything !!!!!
The cooking here is of the Udipi style - Udipi is the Indian name for the region that was called Mangalore by the Portugese . The Udipi style of cooking ( and hence the Dosas ) differ from the cooking style in TamilNad , Kerala & Andhra . To me the Udipi Dosas seem to be the best and were probably the original .
At Dosa King they serve Dosas ( about 7 varieties ) , iddlies , vadas , massala vadas , bondas , samosas , purees , chappatis , parathas , uthappums , etc. , etc .
It is more expensive than TamilNad Cafe and definitely more expensive than Malaysian Auntie - but it is worth every satang .
Incidentally at Dosa King they only serve vegetarian food and they do not serve alcohol . Yurune , I can see that your interest has totally evaporated !!!
Although they have 3 floors , currently they are only operating on the ground floor while the upper 2 floors are being done up . So most times it is not too easy to get a seating immediately and you may have to wait for some time .

DOSA KING - Sukhumvit Soi 19

Okay..I finally made it to Doas King...

Was wandering down Sukhumvit Sunday lunchtime TG in tow

"Wanna try Indian Food"

"I can eat anything"

"okay Indian it is...don't say I didn't give you the option to say no"

"Up to you"

What the hell, I need a Dosa and I can eat hers too.

I have one problem with Indian food......I order too much of it every time.....

So...what did I do...yes...ordered too much, I should have known the sparrow opposite wasn't gonna be wolfing it down like me.

Okay

Samosa's to start....not bad but the pasty a little heavier than I like...also not hot enough.

Paneer Pokora...really rather excellent...TG liked those.

Two regular Masala Dosa's. Excellent. I'm not as familiar with Southern Indian food, so I don't know the condiments that come with dosas...both excellent. She hated the coconut based one, but enjoyed the spicy green one. I had to eat some of hers, but she found it okay.

Saag Paneer and Nan Bread....very good, but the naan a wee bit to dry for my liking and a bit thin. TG nibble a bit of both, and politely advised she is not a big eater, same excuse I use when offered to eat at the bug store. I bet she wolfed down food as soon as she got home.

Sweet Lassi, very good. TG hated it.

She was more than brave enough to try, though I noticed that she was using the Food Management Technique of pushing things around the plate until transferring it elsewhere, and asking for the 'used' plate to be cleared.

640B bill...I was stuffed.

I'll admit to saying that I prefer malaysian Aunties, found the dosas there to be excellent, but the food was fresh, inexpensive and the owner I spoke to very pleasant.

TG said it was like being outside of Thailand as she was the only Thai in the place.

I asked everybody if they were Arramsey, but alas they looked at me and thought..."No...aren't you?"...maybe I am.

Yurune,
Good to see that you mostly enjoyed your meal at Dosa King - except for one or two hitches.
It is not suprising that your TG did not particularly like the food. I had taken a friend from the US there along with his TG - he was raving about the food, but his TG puked. I think it has something to do with the ghee or cooking oil that is used which most Thais cannot stomach.
I like that touch about asking everyone there if they were Arramsey !!! Ha ! Ha! Ha!

KamaSutra
Hi to all

In my earlier post, I had mentioned about 'Tamilnadu Restaurant' as a good south indian restaurant. Recently I visited another South Indian/Srilankan Restaurant 'New Madras Cafe', its on Silom Soi 13 (walk to the end of the soi about 50m and you find it on the left side).

Food : better taste than TamilNadu (Specially Mutton Masala, Prawns Masala, Fish Fry and a srilankan option of Kottu with Mutton, Chicken, Vegitables), Prawns fry etc.

Cleaniness : Again better than Tamil Nadu

Drinks : Beer, Ginger Beer, Mango Lassi
Price : Reasonable than Tamilnadu

Worth trying. I would appreciate feedback

Arramsey,

"I think it has something to do with the ghee or cooking oil that is used which most Thais cannot stomach."

How true, my wife who is Thai won't touch Indian food as well and living in Singapore, its everywhere.

At home my mother does not use ghee and uses the normal cooking oil that my wife likes, apparently my wife says its the spices used that differ from Thai cooking

Anyway my wife has learnt to cook excellent Indian food...fish curry...chicken curry and loads of other stuff....but she won't eat it...give her the bugs anytime

I found the cheapest and best places for Indian food are on Soi 3. I forgot the names, but you can't miss them. Walking north of Sukhamvit and Soi 3 on the left side of the street towards Bamboo Bar, there are two of them next to each other. They have menus outside and they try to get you inside the restaurant. The first one has the best price and variety, in my opinion, and the food is very good. The restaurant is well decorated and a nice environment. I had chicken curry, rice, and nana bread for 160 bhat. I had Bhuni rice, the rice with chicken, and nana bread for 140 bhat. If you ask for non-bottled water, they don't charge you and it is filtered. They serve Indian, Pakastani, Iranian, and other local dishes.
