However it is very common for California-mexicans to fry up a thin slab of beef in a pan, slice it into strips and eat that with corn tortillas. But they will refer to this as "carne asada".
Hmmm. Maybe they call it that because carne asada in Spanish means roasted/grilled meat.

mexican food and tex-mex aren't the same; but some business owners don't realize this. thus, a "mexican" restaurant serving tex-mex will always get slammed by aficionados of real mexican food, and vice-versa.

if you want to know about good tex-mex (is there such a thing?), then perhaps it should be the topic of a separate thread.

regarding fajitas: of course mexicans ate this crap long, long ago. it doesn't take a physics major to figure out how to cut up large chunks of bell peppers, onions and meat, then eat them in a large flour tortilla. by and large, this is a disgusting dish. anyone tried sopitos? THAT's mexican food!

Yes, it does, but there are also carne asada real dishes, tacos for instance, which are also roasted meat but with peppers onions etc and so pretty different.

But of course diegobangkok is right in that the meal I described above is not what Mexicans (at least the many I've known) prefer to eat. Though common enough for construction workers or any men who don't have a woman to make good food around at the moment (lol), it's really just a meal on the fly, like a quick poor lunch.

Of course there are differences between what most Mexicans are eating in California and what they're eating in various parts of Mexico too (like in many places, more pescado!!)

Yeah sopitos is great. Not my favorite. But great.

Mr Alan and DiegoBangkok,

I believe the point of the fajita article is that it originated on cattle ranches and made from the 'junk' cuts.

When I have travelled in rural Mexico I have not found beef to be a major staple in thier diet. Even chicken is a luxury.

If beef or chicken were available it would be put in a stew or mixed with beans in an enchalada in order to maximize the number of servings in the dish...

I am told there will be a new Mexican Food Restaurant opening today on Convent Road, about 80-100 meters off of Silom Road.

The name is "Coyote on Convent".

I will sample it in a day or two and let you know how it is but it is owned by a couple of long time friends of mine that have been in the business before.

Edit in: This is a soft opening so there might be a somewhat limited menu for a few days.

Coyote on Convent.. right next between Starbucks and ZEN on Convent Road...

Coyote on Convent is from Hong Kong or at least a derivative of the one from HKG. I have been to the one in HKG, its good with many types of hot sauce; more tex-mex then thai...

For Thais it may be hit or miss; but the drinks in the in HKG were excellent... not sure on this one... but passed it on the way to lunch...

An update on Charley Brown's. This place was good for a while, but like so many places in Bangkok it started out strong and then went downhill. If you are desperate for a Mexican fix it is arguably better than nothing, but certainly nothing to go out of your way for. Looks to be headed in the direction of becoming a JACSAMR (Just Another Crappy Southeast Asia Mexican Restaurant).
