Visited Patpong a few months ago, first time in over 2 years (last time there with BK, last survivor, and some other board members). Ready for dinner but Sizzlers was closed, looked around for another place. Spotted Paddy's Fiesta at the base of Patpong I. Remembered the place from my very first visit, October 1992. Peeked inside, they'd expanded the place, now included an upstairs. Must be OK to have survived in business so long, Right?

I even remembered I had ordered the shrimp fajitas, and they weren't that bad. Checked the menu, now priced over 900 baht. Ouch. Opted for the fish enchaladas for 350, what a mistake. Canned TUNA, not the fresh red snapper you get at sunrise for half the price. Sauce was awful, like someone had all over them.

Margaritas were ok, but the meal kept me up most of the night with a burning hole in the bottom of my gut. Worst experience I've had in LOS. Don't trust an Irishman to do Mex.

Habanero chilies are indigenous to South America & are traded all over in Cuba & Mexico

the word is derived from Habana or Havana which is actually NOT it's origin, but it was first widely traded there

there are spicier chillies, but the Habanero is my favorite that's available locally, not widely available, but it still can be had

Jalapenos don't hold a candle to the spiciness of a Habanero

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoville_scale

note : there's a special breed of Habanero called Red Savina, my boss in CM used to bring them over & have co-workers bring them over & it would knock the f***in' pants off any Thai, LOL

for Mexican food, it's not the Jalapenos they can't stand, it's the vinegar that they can't tolerate

Thais & Phillipinas that I know will complain about Mexican saying it's not HOT per sé, but it's geared up in another way with a vinegary flavor which I love, but most of them don't like it

I'd also like to note that these things will have an affect on your libido which I assume is like a very small does of Viagra or Cialis

it's one of the reasons I am hard so often, I eat chilies like I drink water

I can remember being run off from 7-11 when I used to empty their Jalapano bin on my Nachos, LOL

I also really enjoy a good Wasabi which isn't listed on the Scoville scale, & I don't know it's exact ingredients

It would also affect my libido when I had the good shit while living in Japan

I don't know what you mean by ingredients in wasabi, cause all that is "in" wasabi is, well, uhm, wasabi. It is a kind of root similar to horseradish.

The wasabi served in Japan is just grated/ground wasabi root. Much better IMHO when it is made fresh. I'm not to keen on it, but know more than a few TG's that like it quite a bit.

It's more akin to mustard as opposed to chilli peppers, and has more of an effect on the nasal passages than on the tongue.

on every trip I bring over a selection of chili peppers and seeds.... tried to grow them at the house in isaan, but no luck, even brough over some miracle grow..... there are seed outlets that will recoment different seeds for that climate, but I found it easier to just buy them her, put them in my suitcase, etc.... The famed habenero...... the locals are all scared of it after one person handled it with their hands and their hands started to burn.. and no matter what they did, they could not get the buring to stop.... you bet they are scared to eat them..... just another one of my little pranks to the locals of the village...."here, try farang cili, not hot"

I do have a friend who has had quite a bit of success growing different chilis, even avacados.. but that is a different story.....

Red Savinas (habanero) rank about 550-750k on the scoville scale.Thai chiles, even the little birdies, are less than half that. Ordinary red chiles are about 15k.

Another habanero, a chocolate/purple/ brown I found in Jamaica held the world's hottest" record(750k-850k) until last year, when those Kashmiri peppers (2.1 M Scoville ranking and up) took the record.

Scoville scale: Ranking of 1000 (1k) means 1 part pepper in 1000 parts water and still taste detectable by average human.

Currently growing some of the purple-brown habaneros in Bkk, and some of the Kashmires in Miami

... head's up on a new Mexican joint opening, looks like in the next 2-3 months... now in refurbishment, a villa located about 50 metres off of Sukhumvit on Soi 14, next to the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit.

... looks as more of a mid-scale restaurant with lots of greenery and terraces... saw a farang there, but he was gone by the time I finished eating across the street and could get there to see what was going on.

... more later... hope it rates... most all of the Mexican in Thailand (in all of Asia, for that matter) is pretty weak (except for that GREAT joint in Chiang Mai - name forgotten somewhere in the fog of middle age)

This place should do fine. The farang you saw, name's Rob, Southern Cali / Mex Chef with about 20+ years exp. He created the Menu at Great American Ribs.

I believe the location is a cultural landmark as well. It will be interesting to see what he can do to it to make it pleasing to the eye.

I seem to recall with one of the food suppliers here that they can now produce locally tomatillo, which is staple for mexican cooking.

Nyc you are correct. I was just with Robb in July and they should be open by Nov IMO. It's a huge 100 year old Victorian that was the French Ambassador's home (or something like that). Robb knows Mexican, so I expect it'll be the best place in BKK (I know that's not saying much). He started GARC and Tequila Reef in Pattaya (food went downhill when he left) as well as being chef-partner of the Occidental Grill in San Francisco, a corporate chef, and running a number of Mexican places in the States. It should be a great place for cocktails on the decks even if you don't dig Mex. They've got 15-20 parking spaces and are planning to use upstairs for functions. ps: Robb you owe me a Margarita for all this 'pimpin'. wj

Rob also did the menu for the Tequila Reef in Pattaya and was a partner. He did a few other places in Bangkok. The California Steak House and Cantina, in Hua Hin uses the Tequila Reef recipes, thus Mr. Rob’s.

He was to open his new place this month and since I’m in Bangkok will follow-up and post findings.

You know. Some years ago I really used to enjoy Larrys. I'm afraid to say it has become mundane.

Any idea why?
