Do people actually like these bugs you see outside of the bars or are they there for the farangs as something different. I had grasshoppers one night when I was wasted but only bit the head off of one, not something I would try again.

like you i have tried grasshopper/locust,but found it quite boring.

dead insects i can put up with, but when the live one's are offered, that's when my stomach turns.

Hey bro, a lot of the Issarn ladies are very fond of fried insects. I actually enjoyed the grasshoppers. They tasted like bacon. Only one I wouldn't try is the fried scorpion. Peace

Again this is not a very THAI thing, instead it is a Lao thing, and it originates from extreme poverty and famine in the Northeast (Lao) part of Thailand.

Most Thais (except for Issarn people) do not eat locusts or any other insects.

What is it with this spate of threads about exotic local eating habits?

I'm from Louisiana, we eat crayfish. Want to make an issue out of it?

Or do you just want to enjoy putyting down Thai people?

That truly sucks.

My last remarks were not aimed at ccvbb, cmore, or nokna, but generally at this string of threads about dog, insect, etc cuisine.

I repeat, it's not a Thai but a Lao thing (and Viet) and I detect a whiff of racism implicit in the condesenscion about it all.

I am just curious about the dog and bugs etc. and it is not meant to put down anybody or the food they eat.
I just personally do not want to eat any of these things and therefore that is why I am asking.

Hey brother Sauron, I meant no offence and I hope I didn't come off like I was putting the people of LOS down. Hopefully you know me better then that by now. I was just stating what I observed first hand with my ex and the other ladies. Actually me and the bros did most of the eating . I wasn't aware that insects were eaten out of necessity. I thought they were considered like a delicacy to them. Again no offence was meant. Peace

As Sauron said, it ORIGINATED at least partly from necessity but they are a delicacy now.

Sauron says it is a Lao or Viet thing.
that's why i said i was offered dog and insects.

because my visit up country was to a village very close to the Lao border,i would imagine they had absorbed a lot of the Lao culture over the years and vice versa.
it may have originated through necessity,i would'nt know about that.

all i know is i saw dead dogs in the village, skinned and being prepared for sale, just like i see chickens in butchers shops in the UK.
and the insects in the local market were something to see, ccvvbb knows,he has seen a picture.

i remember being in a regular go-go of mine and one of the girls went out and bought a couple of bags of some sort of insect.
most of them tucked in,but i declined.

and no way would i even dream of putting any Thai down for their eating habits.
i respect them too much to do that,or even imply it.

This I have never tried and so far I could always say no when it was offered to me. As the other bros have already said, it is considered as a snack thing by the Thai. I got used to all these street vendors selling it. It has happened some time that the TGs I was with wanted to buy some bugs and stuff. But I have always said in a very joking way, if you do this I will not kiss you anymore, 555...! By the choice of food eaten in Isaan, I think this is mostly an Isaan thing in LOS.
