My TGF bought a drink from a street side vendor that had what seemed to be black strips of something gelatious in texture. The drink was kind of sweet but not too much so. I tried it but did not care for it. She laughed with the owner when they saw my reaction to the wormlike texture of these "Black strips" as I swallowed.Since she is from south and hates Isaan food more than I do there is little possibility that this drink actually had worms in it.

I am sure someone knows what that was....

I believe it is the same as the Chinese drink here, it's English name is Green Grass, the Chinese name pronunced Ching Chow. The strips are a type of Gelatine; it is supposed to be "cooling"!

The proper name in Singapore for this drink is Chin Chow, Ching Dow is a Chinese beer (Tsing Tao).

This family of cold desserts is quite common in southeast asia.

Common ingredients are crushed ice, flavoured syrups, sago, coconut milk etc. and variations of these.

Sounds similar to the cans of Malee (just one brand) grass jelly drink you will find in most convenience stores etc. refreshing on those rare hot days in Bangkok, Good value at around 12 baht a 240ml can.

I always thought they were boba type drinks, with the jelly stuff tasting licorice-like. Kinda nice tasting, and refreshing - though most drinks in BKK are too sweet for my tastes.

Yes it did have a black licorice flavor to it. I am no longer involved with this TGF. I have terminated the relationship recently. Her english was poor anyway so asking her was never a practical option..

Damn! You know, you could have just told her that you simply don't like licorice
