I have traveled with Thai girls many times, to many places around Thailand, and the countries surrounding, even sent one back home from a trip to Myanmar after the first day.
I have been to quite a few places where I am the only foreigner too. There are some great places all over Thailand, even in Bangkok, that tourists don't frequent. You want some good seafood pop over to Samet Songkram, at Don Hoi Lot. Take the boat up the river at low tide for bt100.
From all my experience I have found for short trips you can travel with just one girl. If you are going for more than 2 days though (unless she speaks good English), you want to take 2 girls with you. This way your main TG has someone to talk to, they will keep themselves entertained, and you won't roll out of bed at night. If they have a friend with to complain to, they will follow you anywhere. You could climb Mt. Everest, and as long as they had a friend with to complain to, they would follow you. I know this from lots of experience.
As far as how much to pay them, the BF is a given. On top of that they want there daily LT rate that you normally pay. This is the real money that they are loosing, and what they need to send home, pay their rent, and live on. They will be very pissed at you if they do not make the money they need.
You will have a hard time trying to find a freelancer that will go for more than 2 days, most do have kids, or family that depend on them, so they can't go longer. You actually will have a hard time finding one that will go longer than over night.
Most of the girls that work in Soi Cowboy also live upstairs in the club they work in. These are the best to take for more than 2 days. They love to get away from the bar/gogo as they only get 2 days off a month, and family obligations, or Temple, are what they use those days off for. There whole life revolves around the club they work in.
Make sure you take pictures of where you go with them, and have prints made for them. It is important to them to show the girls they work with. One girl I took on a trip still has the pictures on her small wall space 6 years later.
The girls that work NANA are different, they don't live there so they have lives outside the bar/gogo, and are not as tempted to go traveling, but they will if they don't have a boyfriend, and usually will cost you more to take. If they do have a boyfriend, then count on them constantly being on the phone, and they will be, constantly. So mention that you will require they turn their phone off, or only one call a day. You really want to get them, then take them to Myanmar. Thai cell phones do not work there, and it drives them crazy trying to get ahold of their boyfriend.
If you take any Thai girl to Myanmar just remember they need a passport, and visa, just like you do to enter the country. It is totally different than taking them to Laos, or Cambodia.
The biggest problem you will have, unless you speak good Thai, is the language problem after a short time, you will both get very bored with each other, that is why you want to take two with you, unless the one you take speaks good English.
As one old friend from this board used to point out about the good ones, if they wear tennis shoes when they change then you will have a good time, where ever you go. If they wear high heals, then before you go anywhere with them, go buy them a pair of tennis shoes....hehehe.

I wouldn't say "most" at all. Now-a-days, a lot of the girls have their own place to live to get away from it all or share with one or two others.
The conditions above the bars for the ladies to sleep are cramped, ropey and definitely not enjoyable except for those desperate for company in a big city, like the newly-arrived.
Some girls who manage to secure their own apartments either alone or with friends drift back again to live above the bar and then move out again, according to the conditions and circumstances of their private lives.
But nearly all prefer to live away from Soi Cowboy and try to.

Yes, I agree with Koolbreeze...its best to take two TG's if you want any piece of mind. They can entertain each other with silly talk or TV while I read a book.
I have taken pairs to Pattaya several times + Ko Chang, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The best part is the disapproving stares and comments I receive from white matrons in the airport lounge and on the plane. What's an old geezer like me doing with two pretty youngsters who are often acting up?
One woman at the airport openly accused me of being a white slaver. I asked her whether she wanted to sign up! When I explained the exchange to the TG's they couldn't stop laughing for ten minutes.

Are you sure you didn't just get suckered with the story?
More likely the girl just wanted some gold to show off to the folks back in the village so they can see how well she is doing. You were the punter she picked to buy the gold for her.
Sounds like it's happened to you more than once since you say the girl has "usually" sold her gold. They must spot you a mile off!
She probably sells the gold you buy for her as well once she gets back to Bangers and waves bye bye to you.
It's good that you enjoy yourself anyway and it's all just part of the salary you pay the girl for the holiday she gives you. I never begrudged buying a girl gold if she wanted it and I thought she was worth it - hey, maybe it was my gold that she hocked!

Before taking a bar girl on holiday you should barfine her for 2 nights at once to make sure that she will actually stay with you for the time agreed. It happens that punters pay the bar for 7 or 14 days for a girl who stays with him for 1 night only and then clears off. ( I get phone call; mother sick, brother fall off motorbike, I sick) No refund of bar fines. Sometimes the girl will trick or blackmail him into paying her for the full agreed holiday. It's just like short-timing.

I've never paid the bar in advance for extended stay bf. The girl simply pays the bf's when she returns to work. She may call the mamasan or another girl to relay the message.
Good point, a test ride for a couple days is a must!

I once said to a great bar girl that I would pay her bar fine for a week- she said dont bother I will get another Farang Boy friend to cover it - just pay me 10,000 and I am yours for the week-
We hit lami Beach (her first time on plane)
Sure enough some John still in town was rung and told she had to go home suddenly - tears flowed and she put in a great performance-

No problems-

I would ask newbies to wait a few tours before doing this though - many a hooker has caught a newbies heart.
