Expat hubbies urged to back Isan - TAT wants them to promote tourism
===========================================
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) 's Northeastern Office in Khon Kaen has launched a cultural tourism project that is hoping to transform expatriates married to Thai women from the Northeast into spokesmen for the region's tourist attractions. The office plans to wow the expatriate husbands with the region's tourist attractions in the hope that it will prompt them to spread the word about Isan to their friends and family back home.

The married couples will be taken on a tour of famous attractions and will be shown traditional activities in Roi Et, Khon Kaen and Maha Sarakham between March 3 and 4.

Nuan Sarnsorn, the director of the TAT's Northeastern Office Region 3, said the number of participants is limited to 15 couples.

Each couple will be charged 1,101 baht to go on the trip and translators will be on hand to help the foreigners.

''In the future, we hope the foreigners, who are sons-in-law of Isan people, will volunteer themselves as spokesmen for our tourism campaign.

''They will gain first-hand experience during the tour, and hopefully they will tell friends and families back home to visit Thailand,'' Mr Nuan said.

The tour itinerary begins with a visit to the famous Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon pagoda at Wat Nong Waeng in Khon Kaen's Muang district on March 3. The couples will be taken to an exhibition hall where historical information about Khon Kaen and artifacts are on display.

They will then visit Ban Phaeng in Maha Sarakham's Kosum Phisai district, famous for its top-quality reed mats.

The couples will also be invited to participate in Roi Et's annual merit-making festival called Boon Pha Wet, among a number of other activities.

=====================================================
Khon Kaen - A total of 142 divorce cases were sent to the Khon Kaen Civil Court in just three months, most of them involving with Thai women seeking divorce from their western husbands, a senior judge said Saturday.

Patikorn Khonpipit, chief justice of the Juvenile and Family Court in Khon Kaen, said the divorce cases reached the court during July 1 to September 30.

He said most of the cases were filed by Thai women who wanted to get divorce from their foreign husbands.

The judge said Khon Kaen was one of the provinces with a lot of Thai women getting married with foreigners and many of them became disillusioned later so they filed for divorce.

Cheated in love?
==============
Khon Kaen - Police on Thursday raided two firms offering match-making services after allegations of swindling women looking for foreign partners.

The police team raided the Thai Publuk and Thai Zury companies in Muang district in the province of Khon Kaen which provide online match-making services for Thai women wanting to find foreign partners.

The raid followed complaints by more than 50 northeastern women, who claimed they had been deceived by the firms, which promised to find foreign husbands for them. They claimed the firms failed to honour agreements.

Pol Lt-Col Weerawuth Siangsai, the chief of the suppression division at the Khon Kaen police station, said women from Khon Kaen and neighbouring provinces had hired the match-making firms.

They told the firms about what they expected of the foreigners they wanted to marry. The firms later contacted foreigners and suggested they chat with the women on the firm's websites.

The correspondence and online match-making service lasted two months and each woman was charged 5,000 baht.

If the two sides wanted to meet, the firms would arrange places for them to see each other face to face. The meeting places included Suvarnabhumi airport and tourist venues, said Pol Lt-Col Weerawuth.

If the two sides agreed to marry, they had to pay 50,000 baht to the service providers, the police officer said. The firm would also get 10 per cent of any dowry money.

Pol Lt-Col Weerawuth said there are six match-making firms in Khon Kaen with over 1,000 registered customers.

Police had been unable to act against the firms earlier because women had not filed charges. Many felt they would be embarrassed if their stories were made public. Most simply gave information to police but did not press charges, said the officer.

Foreign husbands fuel Isan economy
===========================

The Ban Jan village in Thung Khao Luang district of this northeastern province has long been called the ''Switzerland of Asia'', not because it has European scenery, but because the district is full of Swiss son-in-laws.

Unlike in the past when the villagers lived in Thai-style wooden houses or in small shacks, the village of 720 households today is congested with luxurious houses, some worth as much as 30 million baht.

Apart from lavish accommodation, the villagers have become rich with a lot of cash in their pockets. Many have invested in small-scale businesses such as grocery shops and restaurants.

In the old days, Ban Jan villagers were mostly poor farmers. With meagre incomes, parents could not pay for their children's education. Many were forced to drop out of school and leave the village to find jobs to support their families.

The young male dropouts would travel to work in Bangkok or other major cities, while the young damsels were encouraged by job brokers to work in Thai restaurants and shops in Switzerland. These ladies later married Swiss nationals.

''I think there are around 100-200 women married to Swiss nationals in our village. Most of them now live with their husbands in Switzerland. They have sent a lot of money to their parents to build new houses,'' said 53-year-old villager Udom Boonphan, who has a relative with a Swiss husband.

The rags-to-riches tale of Ban Jan women is what is making most of the northeastern women from poor families dream about marrying a foreigner.

A recent study by a researcher from Khon Kaen University's northeastern economy and business research centre shows that these marriages are not just about real-life drama.

The study, taking into account the economic impact of Thai-foreigner marriages in the northeastern region, has found that such cross-national marriages have already contributed 8.6 billion baht to the Northeast economy.

Retail businesses, tourism, the financial sector, transportation, car and motorcycle industries and grocery shops, have all benefitted from them. The study also found that the economic growth in the region has lowered the unemployment rate and helped create up to 750,000 new jobs for the northeastern people.

Wilaiwan Mahaveerawat, the university's economics lecturer who carried out the research, noted that the study's main aim was to look into the changing economic environment and spending behaviour of Thai women and their families after marrying foreigners.

The findings should help the government come up with a suitable regional development plan. ''My research does not aim to encourage Isan (northeastern) women to marry foreigners,'' she said.

It was an year-long study. The idea hit her after she saw the economies of the northeastern provinces, including Khon Kaen, growing sharply.

Many shops selling brandname goods have opened in the province over the past few years and most of their customers happen to be Thai women with foreign husbands.

Samlee Chai-singha, Ban Jan village chief, confirmed the researcher's findings. His daughter, who has been married to a Swiss man for more than 10 years, was a good example, he said.

Mr Samlee said her daughter met her husband in Switzerland when she was working as a waitress in a Thai restaurant there. She was then 22-years-old. Now, the couple have two children aged 10 and three.

After getting married, the girl continued to send money back home, enabling them to build a new house. And every time the family needs money, they just tell her, and soon the money arrives.

''Our daughter and her family only visit us once or twice a year. We miss them so much. My daughter is a grateful person,'' said Mr Samlee.

Mr Samlee's wife insisted that she and her husband had never encouraged their daughter to marry a foreigner as a way to get away from poverty.

''We believe in destiny and love. They can't live a happy life if they have no love for each other,'' Mrs Rujee said.

However, she said, not every woman married to a foreigner in her community has had a happy married life.

Some have painful stories to tell. Divorced by their husbands, some even had to leave their children abroad before returning to Thailand, she said.

Patcharaporn Pinet, 39, married to retired Canadian Timothy Hope, 52, for two years, said money was not a factor in her decision to marry the man.

''I never think about his money. He is a good, kind and honest man. That's why I love him,'' she said.

Mrs Patcharaporn met the former businessman four years ago when the Canadian came for a vacation to Bangkok.

The couple now run a small restaurant in Roi Et.

''It isn't about sex. I love her because she is polite, kind and beautiful. I don't mind if she is poor. I'm willing to help her take care of her family,'' said Mr Hope, who has two daughters from his first marriage. He was previously married to a Canadian woman.

''I don't want to go back to Canada. I want to spend the rest of my life and die here,'' he said.

Women looking for Western husbands 'need legal advice'
====================================

Thai women hoping to land themselves a Western husband have been warned to learn about their legal rights or they could end up with a miserable life.

Suwat Kaewsook, director of the Department of Consular Affairs' Protection of Thai Nationals Abroad Division, said women must understand more about foreign citizenship if they wish to live overseas.

"Living abroad with foreign husbands is not always as wonderful as a lot of people expect, so you must learn more about your [legal] rights in a foreign country," Mr Suwat said.

He was speaking to around 100 people who attended a seminar entitled "Across the Universe: Cross Cultural Marriages", which was hosted by Rangsit University's International College.

Kanokrat Nimsamoot Booth, chair of the Federation of Thai and Foreign Spouse Networks Association of Thailand, said she had launched a website _ http://www.thaiforeignspouse.com _ to help Thai women who have problems with their foreign husbands.

Ms Kanokrat revealed that just over two months after the site's launch, around 200 women had sought advice on their marriages.

"The main problem is that their foreign husbands have affairs and want a divorce, despite them having kids together," said Ms Kanokrat.

She said many of the women did not have enough money to sue their husbands for abandonment and sought help from her association.

Somkid Homnet, a consultant working with the Department of Labour and Social Welfare who carried out a study concerning foreign spouses in Udon Thani province last year, presented the findings at the seminar.

He discovered that there were up to 5,700 foreign spouses from 33 countries living in the province.

Most of them were German, British, American, Australian and French, and they had an average monthly income of about 100,000 baht.

The study also found they met their wives through matchmaking companies, the internet and friends or relatives.

There are currently around 50,000 Thai women married to German men, 30,000 married to French men, 30,000 to Americans, 25,000 to Australians, 10,000 to Britons, 8,742 to Swedes, 7,937 to Taiwanese, 3,000 to Austrians, 2,891 to Finns and 1,086 to Danes, according to statistics compiled by the Foreign Ministry.
