Ok I know some long time comment is due-
Who rates as more dishonest than Thais?
After the police scams and Pattaya corruption and blantant airport scams -
regular farang hikes-
Is there anyone left with rose colored glasses?
Sure a girl in the internet chased me with change-
But really man these guys take the cake sometimes-
But are they the worst?
I think its an open forum - I rate them better than Borcay island in Philipines and maybe Cape Town-
But certainly in Asia Thais must be given the title when authorities actually take part?
Thoughts?
I mentioned In a Pattaya Thread what I saw Yesterday - But bangkok is no different - just in degree-
At MBK a man at the Taxi arrival bank at the rear entrance was telling everyone the mall was closed for a holiday - while offer his special services for a shopping treat
I aggressively warned him if he was lying I would treat him as a thieve and maybe punish him-
He then saw me place on brass Knuckles before my girlfriend calmed the situation-
It was open-
Thais are going to have there good named destroyed by ratbags-
The jet ski scammers in Pattaya will just lead the international holiday crowd to the conclusion we should all know already-

... I will try to resist ranting on and on about the fundamental inferiority of Thai cultural values, as I am so inclined, and try to confine my remarks to the subject of Thai lying... but, the two are interdependent, so I will divert for only a moment... or two.
... cultural values are heavily influenced by spiritual beliefs, in this case Thai Buddhism, as distinct from other Buddhist sects... a thoughtful Korean Buddhist buddy insists that Thai aristocrats and elite entitled amayata long ago hijacked Buddhism and mis-shapened it to servej their purposes of pacifying the population... (sidenote: the King is the head of the Thai Buddhist faith).
... to circle back to the subject, Thai values exclude any sense of guilt... you ever notice that?.. getting a Thai to accept responsibility is one thing, requiring threats of horrific, painful torture... but, when they are forced to 'accept responsibility', it includes no remorse, or sense of guilt.
... the consequences of lying have no effect on a Thai... no responsibility, no guilt, therefore no pain... without negative reinforcement, lying is not an issue to a Thai... now, couple that with the remarkable childlike ability of grown adult Thai men and women (educated, travelled, well-read adults) to blithly deny screaming realities before their very eyes.
... this makes Thais my vote as contender for undisputed World Champion Pathological Liars... lying is ingrained bone deep in Thais, culturally... so, have I over-analyzed these amazing people?

There are scams everywhere, and especially in poor countries.
I feel safer in Thailand than in probably any other country I have been to, certainly any other fun country.
I'm a little surprised that an old hand like you, DG, and someone who calls a spade a spade, is also not taking into account the company you are keeping. You're in a city of hookers and scam-merchants in a country where the police is utterly corrupt; where the punters are ethnically different to the locals (in a country which is notoriously racist) ; where we're seen as rich and with unpleasant habits (like smearing our shit all over our arses) ; and yet in 90% of interactions the Thais are incredibly polite, outstandingly honest (running after you to return your wallet, for example; not stealing from you when you are asleep) and so utterly lovely that we forget all of the above, and often even forget that almost all of the time, almost all of them are in it for the money.
I think Thais are wonderfully honest, given all that!

... my own comments are based on 11 years residence, and experiences overwhelmingly distant from the P4P scene... worked with professional Thais as the only farang amongst 800 employees (70% professionals) in a listed company, and launched, ran and sold two fairly substantial businesses of my own, each staffed with Thais across the full breadth of the social and educational spectrum... one with 1,200 employees and 95% semi-skilled, and the other 25 employees and 90% professionals... I have also made many, many trips into rural upcountry Thailand dealing with some pretty abused kids... I think mine is a very broad view of the Thai society.
... in 11 years, I can count exactly two (2) times that Thais came "running out" to return misplaced goods, against scores of rat-f***ings and attempted rat-f***ings... none, incidently, by prostitutes.
... honestly... I am looking, and I just don't see it farangman4... I really don't.

sure but it pisses me off watching cops haul incident arse and joining in-
I am an old hand -
But when cops bust people who are not doing anything it stinks-
One Go Go Guy copped a 100,000 baht fine for (get this touching a breast) which he didnt-
That made press-
Really Cheap charlie is spot on in some ways-
I am aware its a parasite situation but the audacity of law enforcement biting our arses annoys me alot-
I have been coming here 15 years and lived here twice-
But its decended in to a situation where the 10% (i say 2% ) is worse than anything I have seen-
I mean its open organized corruption deserved of our contempt

Well, true, the wallet-running thing is rare here too.
But it is rare anywhere.
I guess I'm not arguing that they are any better than anywhere else, just that they are not really any worse, overall. Just my experience.

... when you say Thais are no worse than "anywhere else", I assume you are thinking other third world countries with a similarly corrupt culture and the majority of the population suffering privation.
... I can buy that... to me, though, what makes Thai's common practice of lying so incidious is the Thais' seeming lack of any remorse or guilt for bald-faced lying... that Thais don't see lying as "bad"... just a "little bad"... and only then, if they get caught... and only then, because it causes them loss of face, not because lying is wrong in and of itself, or because of what it might have done to the victms of their lies.
... at worse, it is a lack of empathy, which is a personality disorder.

I have just noticed Thai people lie when they r doing business. Its not like they have murdered someone & covering their bases.
I am sure all people on this forum must have lied at least once in their life for getting a job, a promotion or for any other reason.
And corruption is there in all countries, be it, developed or third world countries, you can't help it.

In terms of third world: when it comes to the scams and corruption, yes, I mean that. Though when it comes to individual lack of honesty or violence: I'd be much more wary of placing my phone, say, on the table in a bar in any European capital than in Bangkok. Who's ever been mugged in Bangkok? Even pickpocketing seems to happen in very specific, touristy places. Far worse in Europe.

Couldn't disagree more. So you embrace a value system based on class discrimination, racism and brainwashing but that's OK because you behave politely? I for one very much enjoy the general safety, security and fun provided by living in an expat bubble here but I'm certainly under no illusions as to the foul reality of what's right outside that bubble.
