I live in the Eastcoast in the USA... my own house had no power for 24 hours (flood basement as no sump pump...). The feeling was very bad. Power got back the next day, but it was quite a bad experience and indeed many others got their whole homes flooded... and took months (or still they work on it) for them to recover.

In addition to the supplies, think about the people, the workers who live out of BKK where its cheap and travel by bus hours daily to work in BKK... their own homes or relatives got affected and hence they will have to first take care of their own problems before they can resume work as usual.

No one likes to cancel.. me included.. after waiting for so long for the trip but... the suffering you may get can be worse.. I sure do not want to have a repeat of my experience during the hurrican in the EastCoast... and that was just power lost.. no food issue (though could not cook or heat anything... ) or water issue or house dammage other than flood in the basement (3 feet...). To get worse experience and for weeks in Bkk? no thanks... so yes I watch as you very carefully...

Chiang Mai is nice too.. and out of the issues and may have direct flights from airports without going through BKK (Phuket too). While we want BKK maybe this time we can give other places a try...

If you need to know if lower Sukhumvit is flooded or not, this is a good way, use Landmark Hotel's live webcam.

Just fly in to Phuket, and survey the BKK situation from there.

Of course, in Phuket you will have to deal with more expensive costs, and the regular and constant rip offs.

Or, just head out to Pattaya from the airport, and evaluate the BKK situation from there.

Here's another side of the impact that the govt.'s incompetence is causing in the long term.

Seagate, Western Digital warn of long-term drive shortages

Seagate and WD outline Thai flooding damage

Seagate and Western Digital both warned late this week that continued flooding in Thailand was worsening shortages. Western Digital has been the worst affected and anticipated a major hit to supply of its hard drives made in the country. Seagate's main plants were unaffected so far, but many of the smaller companies supplying parts were temporarily shut down, the company said.

There would be a 'significant impact," Seagate said, and it expected this to last over multiple quarters.

About 25 percent of hard drives are made in Thailand and could see significant shortages among traditional PCs. A knock-on effect could lead to increased prices both for PCs and aftermarket drives and, in extreme cases, delayed models as companies wait to get enough stock. Some may also make aggressive orders to book a guaranteed supply, possibly creating problems for smaller PC builders.

The expected shortage could magnify problems for computers. Windows PC makers are already seeing slow sales growth and in some cases may have to contend with the inability to make already conservative expectations.

Apple has warned that it might be affected as well, although it may be the best positioned to mitigate the loss. Its relative entry-level MacBook Air uses entirely flash-based storage, often made well away from Thailand by Samsung and Toshiba. The iPad has been denting traditional PCs and again uses only flash storage, giving it little trouble on the market.

Numerous other electronics companies operate out of Thailand. Nikon produces some of its less expensive compact and DSLR bodies and is expecting a camera shortage while its own plant is shut down. [via CRN]

Thanks for the traffic cam links. That's great. Well, it does at least give you an idea if it's safe to visit or not.

Usually these are good to check for traffic where I want to go when in BKK... but now it shows very little traffic... all cars are parked on the high grounds and people do not travel?
