I wouldn't want to be a Muslim in the south right now.
If you weren't then you would be the minority, and stand the best chance of getting killed.

Do you so easily forget the majority of the Southern three provinces are Muslim, and by a large margin?

Just because Thaksin killed innocent people does not mean he knew what he was doing as you professed earlier.

"The brother knew how to deal with this....". If he is your brother then I seriously take pitty on you because he in fact did not know how to deal with it, and the present actions are a result.

Under his, and his sister's time in office violent actions in the South increased, not decreased as you seem to imply by saying he knew how to "deal" with it. All he knows how to do is kill innocent people, and now it is coming back to haunt him, and his sister because they are simply racist bigots that have no concern for anyone but themselves.

He did not know how to deal with it, and that is the problem. The killings you reference dealt with innocent people for the most part, and no one was brought to justice for the killings, as has been demanded by the Southerners.

The first incident was the dissapearance of a promenant Muslim lawyer outspoken about the racism, and bigotry. Under Thakisin's time in office he has silenced, and has never been found in any investigation.

The last incident was the killing of 3 innocent kids by Rangers in the military. Those responsible for the murders were punished by being transfered, but not prosecuted for the professed murders. It was all covered up, and is documented.

This government, and Thaksin's government does, and did not know what to do about the situation, and refused to do what was asked for, the simple prosecution of those responsible for the murders of innocent people would have stopped the violence.

As you seem to imply in your racism, and one post that was clearly racist (and edited because of it), you think it is a good thing people are killed just because they are Muslim, brought out by your referencing the government killings as good things done by Thaksin's government, without any knowledge of what really happened, only that Muslims were killed.

Why did you not reference Thaksin's killings during his drug campaign too? About 3000 innocent people were killed then, even kids, but then they weren't identified as Muslim were they.

I wonder how many feel compassion for the Muslims?

Certainly few Thais outside that region.

I have my own views

The prior comments of mine were sarcastic in intension....it was meant to highlight what Magnum further pointed out.....the brutality of the Thaksins

Their "know" how is heavy handed ness.

The Thais do not want or need fundamentalism..extremism Muslim to impact on the main broader community.

It's no secret the Muslims of the south are greatly discriminated against.

Koolbreeze is right to take me to task if he thought I was saying its ok.

But I wasn't.

What's I was saying is the outcome will go some way to Magnums forecast of civil war.

Until the Muslims are treated better and education and funds are better balanced in the south.

Until the Muslim extremists don't play the terrorist card.

The Thai heavy hand will act without much outcry.....and that's fact...not opinion

I see only 1 small problem....the mistakes/accidents/willful negligence (delete the words you disagree with) causing death in the South are perpetrated by the security forces, not the government. Granted in most countries the security forces are under the control and guidance of the government, but not all countries...right !
I have yet to see any Thai government take on the Army for mistakes...Rohinga, Chinese ships in the North, the troubles in the South.
In addition, having lived here since prior to Thaksins first stint, and through his first, second, and the fun and games thereafter, its in the news every day about beheadings, motorsi bombs and shootings in the South. Not sure statistically its proven that this is all increasing just because of Thaksin...its always been a problem, and continued to be such through Abhisit's time.

... for anyone with about 20 minutes to spare, Wikipedia has a pretty good summary of a complex problem... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Thailand_insurgency

... it is about ethnicity... it is about economics... it is about culture... it is about political indifference... it is NOT about religion.

... Pattani has Aceh written ALL over it.

... but, in the hands of Thais, nothing good can come of this... the annual body count is averaging about 600 since 2004... 50 per month.

The following is an article that was sent from Bangkokpost.com.

Bombs deal a blow to Hat Yai tourism sector

And from Magnums source a paragraph that highlights the hard hearted Thaksins stand.

This paragraph was in relation to army actions that resulted in many deaths, and Thaksin blaming in part their religious fasting as a partial reason for death.

Hundreds of local people, mostly young men, were arrested. They were made to take off their shirts and lie on the ground. Their hands were tied behind their backs. Later that afternoon, they were thrown by soldiers into trucks to be taken to the Ingkayutthaboriharn army camp in the nearby province of Pattani. The prisoners were stacked five or six deep in the trucks, and by the time the trucks reached their destination five hours later, in the heat of the day, 78 men had suffocated to death.

This incident sparked widespread protests across the south, and indeed across Thailand, since many non-Muslim Thais were appalled at the army's behaviour. Thaksin, however, gave the army his full support. Those responsible for the ill-treatment and death of the detainees received the most minor of non-custodial punishments. Thaksin's initial response was to defend the army's actions, saying that the 78 men died "because they were already weak from fasting during the month of Ramadan."

EDITORIAL

South strategy an utter failure
Published: 3/04/2012

Saturday was the worst day ever in Thailand's long fight with terrorists. Two car bombs and two other blasts killed 14 people and wounded more than 350 in Yala town and in Hat Yai, the economic centre and largest city in the far South. Once again, authorities have called urgent meetings and issued statements meant to calm the nation. Once again, the security forces and political leadership alike have failed at their primary task of keeping the Thai people and visitors safe.

And once again, authorities admit they had no idea that coordinated car bomb attacks were being planned for Saturday. Once the bombs exploded, they had no idea who was involved.

Witnesses and footage recorded by CCTV cameras may help to apprehend the actual killers. As for who planned and ordered these cowardly and inhuman attacks, the nation is simply out of luck.

After more than seven years, more than 5,000 deaths, and many more thousands of shattered lives, both the security forces and political leaders at all levels have failed utterly even to identify the enemy.

There must be no mistake that the leaders who decided to carry out the weekend bombings, and those who actually participated, are enemies of Thailand. They have rejected the very pillars of nation, King and religion.

They deliberately plan and carry out murders of entirely innocent people, both Thais and foreign guests.

The flimsy and craven claims of religious faith by the killers are unconvincing. The tired old calls for a separate nation are not supported by history or public sentiment. The regional problems of the deep South no more justify murderous violence than those of other regions, such as the far more populous and peaceful Northeast.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra once again escaped tough questioning about the South. She expressed her no doubt heartfelt sympathy to the wounded and families of the dead.

But her claim that she did not want to provide information on the incident to safeguard the investigation fails to hold water. Somewhere, a group of people planned and carried out the butchery, and Ms Yingluck, her ministers, her police chief and her military bosses have no idea who they are or how to find them.

Ex-premier Abhisit Vejjajiva was obviously just trying to score political points in his suggestion that "it is now time for the government to review its policies towards the insurgency in the South". The same was said about Mr Abhisit's government for nearly three years.

The blame for Saturday's bloodshed rests entirely on the gang that organised it. But the nation has a right to expect better results from the plans and billions of baht poured into security efforts in the South.

One rarely hears of a thwarted bombing, assassination or drive-by murder. Only on rare occasions do security forces succeed in tracking down the killers. The country has the right to demand better protection.

There is plenty of blame to go around for the failure to detect and halt Saturday's car bombs. But promises to "step up security" are more than seven years old.

Clearly, what the government is doing to protect Thais and visitors has not worked. It is time for a whole new approach to combat the enemies in the South and rein in their senseless attacks.

Report from The Nation dated 4 April 2012 :-

Security measures for Songkran increased nationwide
========================================

City authorities are on high alert and setting increased security measures for this month's Songkran festival, which runs from April 12-16.

The precautions issued by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration are meant to prevent any violence after last weekend's car bomb attacks in Yala and Songkhla, said City Law Enforcement Department director Kramol Olarawat.

The authorities will mobilise 1,240 law enforcement staff from the city's 50 district offices to assist police in providing security and to help motorists during the traditional water festival.

Thousands of Bangkokians will travel to the provinces, while many visitors will flow into the capital for the festivities, he said.

Report from The Nation dated 7 April 2012 :-

Police chief orders tight security in capital
================================

National police chief Pol General Priewphan Damapong sent an urgent fax to all relevant police bureaux to boost security and adopt aggressive measures to ensure safety in the capital during Songkran.

The fax said that since terrorism was a threat in many parts of the world and as the Valentine's Day explosions had affected the safety of Bangkok residents, the police needed to adopt strict measures in ensuring people's safety during Songkran, when many foreigners are expected to visit the Kingdom.

The Police Special Branch Division was told to coordinate with embassies and consulates as well as with the police stations in the area. All highrises also need to be checked to prevent sharpshooters from targeting embassies. The police force has also been ordered to patrol religious sites, tourist destinations, restaurants and other crowded areas.

In addition, the Immigration Bureau has been instructed to closely inspect foreigners who enter the Kingdom, especially people from countries that have terrorist links, while the Border Patrol Police Bureau has been told to have their ordnance disposal teams on standby.

Commanders and their deputies need to be on hand, especially at night, and provide reports to the Royal Thai Police Bureau in case of emergencies.

Meanwhile, Khao San Road, which is a popular venue among tourists during Songkran, is expected to be chocabloc with revellers, especially since each and every one of the 700 hotel rooms in the area has been booked, Piyabut Jivoramonaiyakul, president of the Khao San Business Association, said.

He added that about Bt10 million should be generated daily during Songkran celebrations, which will officially be launched on Thursday by HRH Princess Somsavali and come to an end next Sunday.

An Assumption University poll showed that 55 per cent of the 1,217 respondents were planning to leave Bangkok, of whom 40 per cent would take their own vehicles, 33 per cent would opt for public buses, 7 per cent will go for public vans and 6 per cent for trains.

... I guess everything you need to know about the level of policing technology that is used to fight terrorists by the Royal Thai Police is described in the opening line... "National police chief Pol General Priewphan Damapong sent an urgent fax to all relevant police bureau[s]"... faxes!

... a fax!... he sent them a FAX!... hope good old-fashioned cops on motorscooters on the street is effective enough.
