Minder,

First check your history before posting:

Dresden Bombings

This was British led operation that used some elements of the 8th Air Force to carry out the daylight raids as the British were unwilling to bomb during the days.

Secondly your post was not a 'lets remember the effects of the war post but was clearly directed at the Japanese people in general. Note how you end your post:

In those moments I think that I to would like to visit Japan just one time - just find me a time machine and a plane called the Enola Gay and I'll happily be on my way. Enjoy.

That in no way supports your quote in your second post:

I hate what they did in the past as a Nation - but it is not a blind suicide bombers hatred - it is a hatred of the waste and the inhumanity that that war brought to the world. I feel there is a message in the past that should be heard - hence the RSL's words have always rung very true to me - Lest We Forget.

To wish to be on the plane that dropped the Atom Bomb on Hiroshima (whether you so a 'Slim Pickens' or not) is a reflection the same irrational haterd that the young Palestinian Intifada supporter has against Israel or the Iraqui insurgent has against the Americans...

The same could be applied to ANY nation under the sun, so don't single out the Japanese in your Enola Gay fantasies....

I second IBFrang post. I think Japan ranks up there as one of the most tourist unfriendly countries in the world. Unless you have a Japanese friend or tour guide for it. I could not spend a yen when I tried. Shop keepers ran for cover when I went near their shops and forget about P4P. I had to go there on business and may have to go there again on business, but I will never go there on a vacation.

I agree about Japan being generally an unfriendly country to visit. And I speak the ligo.

Years ago, I tried to go into some bars in Kyoto but just got waved out. That's ever happened to me in any Asian country........or for that matter anywhere else in the world.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 23 January 2007 :-

Immigration officers to be taught etiquette
===============================

Immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi airport are being sent to etiquette boot camp to learn how to greet and thank visitors, after travellers frowned on their lack of courtesy.

Pol Maj-Gen Chaktip Chaichinda, commander of the airport immigration office, said the "wai and smile" training followed complaints from tourists.

About 30% of travellers surveyed complained that immigration staff at the airport were not only unsmiling but downright unfriendly.

They were also unhappy with the slow queues at immigration.

Pol Maj-Gen Chaktip said the office had joined with Rajabhat Suan Dusit University to offer 1,200 immigration police officers a training course in personality development to improve the service.

The Sawasdee Project provides instruction on appropriate greetings, such as a wai and saying thank you, to polish their tarnished image.

However, Pol Maj-Gen Chaktip said immigration formalities still need to be strict to prevent people using fake papers.

The Sawasdee Project will be extended to staff at other major airports nationwide, he said.

Suppose that you had three choices:

- Screwing the most beautiful girl in the world

- Winning a tennis grand slam

- Getting the latest Porsche Cayman

I've got a feeling that either of the last two might take care of the first one.

China Sailor;

You state that I have no right to still feel anger toward the Japanese of the World War Two era for murdering my relatives. My references to then rather than now are clear - if you choose to ignore that so be it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_11%2C_2001_attacks

Tell me then, at what point in time will you feel it appropriate that your mother's advice to get over it ("That was then, this is now") be given to those who lost relatives on Sept 11 2000? Five more years? Ten? Fifty?

Many young Japanese who visit the Australian War Museum at Hellfire Pass have been distressed by what they learn, some I have been told by the Museum's manager leave in tears http://www.dva.gov.au/commem/oawg/thailand.htm

Despite internet access and a relatively high standard of education it seems they have had no idea of Japan's true actions and behaviour during the Second World War. Apparently is not taught to them in their schools. It is not part of their history....but I guess you are okay with that. Enjoy.

Doesn’t exactly the same thing happen in Bangkok at places like Long Gun & Suzie Wong on Cowboy & at some of the Rainbow bars in Nana, relevant to people of African and Indian origin? Call such behavior polite ? Would it be right to label all Thais as impolite / racist, because of the policies practiced at such joints?

Considering the source of the poll in the OP – Norway – I doubt the treatment of Africans or Indians in Thailand (in particular their treatment in the sex industry) played a very large role in how Thailand faired in the poll. But I could be wrong.

I did not intend to imply that ALL (or even the majority for that matter) Thais or Japanese were racists. If my posts have come across in that fashion then I apologize. Racism is certainly not confined to any one nation; every nation in the world that I have traveled to has had their fair share. Sure some more so than others but not really looking to debate what country in the world ranks highest on the racism scale.

If you look back to my original post on this thread I actually indicated that I preferred the treatment I received in Japan because IMHO it was much more direct/ honest as compared to Thailand.

Germany - in World War II
Cambodia - Killing Fields
Vietnam - Khmer Rouge
Turkey - Armenian Genocide
China - Cultural Revolution and Great leap Forward
USSR - Stalin's purges
Italy - Mussolini's purges in Ethiopia and Yugoslavia
USA - genocide of the Native Americans
Australia - How's them aborigines?

Plenty of pleasantries, and the Japanese actions rank pretty low.

As for your question when the "That was then, this is now" advice be given to those who lost relatives on Sept 11 2000? Five more years? Ten? Fifty?

I'd say, right about now. Several insane sheepherders being responsible for killing thousand of our civilians, is no reason to firebomb the shishkabab shop of a hard-working family that is just trying to make ends meet, and is friendly to strangers and customers.
