Remember this is not Al Qaeda these are Iranian trained & controlled operatives. Their rationale & actions are different.

I believe the 'Arab' in Cowboy is actually an Iranian. Furthermore he is rumoured to be as involved in the laundry business as the bar business.

Many Iranian enterprises such as drug production & smuggling are semi-official to raise funds - just like North Korea's.

This specific threat is v likely intimately tied to events in Iran. Last week an Iranian nuclear scientist was assassinated - the Iranians may have wanted revenge. IF that is their rationale they would specifically target Israelis not just any old infidel.

This is their marjinal attempt at redirecting the propaganda away from the real issue, there is still at least one other terrorist on the loose that they know about, and have enough credible evidence against to issue an arrest warrant. They do not issue those lightly because of "face" if they are wrong.

I suspect the person they arrested is more of a minor player in all this, with the person they just issued the new arrest warrant for as being the real threat. They are keeping his name, and identity secret as not to panic the public from what I see.

He must be a publicly known terrorist or they would have no qualms about asking the public for their help in finding him. They are keeping the details of his identity in the warrant secret. I do expect nothing to ever be revealed when they do catch him, and for him to be moved out of the country immediately to another location if he is indeed a known individual. This all done to protect Thailand from perceived direct involvement.

Report from Bangkok Post dated 20 January 2012 :-

Second terror suspect sought
Court issues warrant for Atris's housemate
=======================================

The Criminal Court yesterday approved an arrest warrant for an alleged accomplice of Lebanese national Hussein Atris, questioned in relation to police inquiries about terrorist activity in Bangkok.

The suspect has been identified as James Sammy Paolo, 40, who is also Lebanese.

He will face the same charges as Mr Atris, of possessing forbidden chemical substances, said Pol Gen Priewpan Damapong, the national police chief.

Mr Paolo was Mr Atris' housemate at the shophouse in tambon Mahachai in Samut Sakhon's Muang district where police found four tonnes of urea-based fertiliser which could have been used to make several bombs.

Police are trying to determine whether Mr Paolo is still in Thailand and have contacted Interpol in their efforts to track him down.

Pol Gen Priewpan said the sketch of Mr Paolo in the arrest warrant was produced from a description given by Mr Atris.

Mr Atris was arrested when he arrived at Bangkok airport last Thursday.

Both men are accused of violating the Military Supply Act by possessing ammonium nitrate without permission. Pol Gen Priewpan said Mr Atris had told police that he and Mr Paolo were planning to send the chemicals to another country and had rented 10 containers from the Transport Co.

Pol Gen Priewpan said since Mr Atris' arrest he has tried to assure the international community that Thailand was not a terrorist target.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said the Foreign Ministry has urged the US to lift its terror warning which urged American citizens to be wary of possible attacks between Jan 13 and 15.

"This period has passed and nothing has happened," he said.

The US and Israel have not sent the government any extra information on Mr Atris, which means police cannot press a terrorism charges against him.

Mr Atris himself has denied he is a member of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

As a result, police can only press a criminal charge against him.

Meanwhile, Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa yesterday chaired a meeting of the committee on National Tourism Policy, which discussed the effects of the terrorism warnings.

Tourist numbers still remain high, despite the warnings, he said.

Ministry spokesman Watchara Kannika said staff would manage responses to the terrorism alert if the travel warning is not lifted.

Report fromThe Nation dated 20 January 2012 :-

Tourism agencies eye march on embassy over US terror warning
================================================

Tourism operators yesterday threatened to march on the US Embassy to meet with the ambassador if the United States refuses to withdraw its terrorism warning for Thailand within two days.

"Those concerned operators will join forces to submit their demand to US Ambassador Kristie Kenney to learn more about the impacts of maintaining the warning," said Watchara Kannikar, spokesman of the Tourism Ministry.

"They will also present information that they got in cooperation with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the National Police Office and other security agencies, which shows that Thailand is not a terrorist target," he said after a meeting of the National Tourism Policy Committee.

With the raising of a terrorism-threat warning by the US, those operators are facing business losses as tourists mainly from China and India have changed their plans to skip Bangkok.

Reluctance to visit
----------------------
The committee to monitor the situation after the posting of the terrorism warning in Bangkok by the US is also concerned about the impacts on tourists, especially those from China and India who are sensitive to news about terrorism, flooding and Suvarnabhumi Airport.

"Those news reports have made tourists reluctant to enter Thailand," Watchara said.

However, cancellations of hotel-room and air-ticket bookings are not that high now, as the problem is still limited to the three areas in Bangkok mentioned in the US warning. Tourists have avoided Bangkok and proceeded directly to their destinations after taking off from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Chiang Mai and Phuket.

The ministry will inform tourists of the facts. It projects visitor arrivals will reach 19.55 million, up slightly from 19 million last year. They are expected to generate at least Bt760 billion of income for Thailand.

Tourism Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa went down to Khao San Road, where crowds of Israeli and American tourists gather, to convince them of Thailand's security measures.

Waranchai Chokchana, an activist, called on the US Embassy to cancel the travel alert.

"Thailand is not a target of terror attacks at all. But the US has issued the warning, which has now hurt Thailand's economy and tourism," he said.

US Embassy officials took a letter of protest from Waranchai, who then left.

Foreign Minister Surapong Towichukchaikul said the ministry's permanent secretary had explained the recent high-profile terrorism case to the United States.

"We believe the warning will be revoked," he said. "It will just take some time."

Surapong also expressed confidence that foreign terrorists would not stage any attack in Thailand because the country had been friendly to all.

This month, Atris Hussein was arrested at Suvarnabhumi for his alleged link to a terrorism network.

A police investigation suggested that Hussein was planning to export bomb-making materials such as urea fertiliser and ammonium nitrate to a third country. Ammonium nitrate is a prohibited chemical in Thailand and Hussein is now facing charges of unauthorised possession of the controlled substance.

Hussein has two passports, Lebanese and Swedish. He had rented a shophouse in Samut Sakhon for about two years to keep the large stash of ammonium nitrate and urea fertiliser, which have now been seized.

National Police chief Priewphan Damapong said police were seeking an arrest warrant for a second suspect in the case.

"We have drawn up a sketch based on the description given by Hussein and the shophouse owner," the general said.

This suspect had lived in the shophouses with Hussein for months, he said.

Maj-General Anuchai Lekbam-rung, deputy Metropoli-tan Police commissioner. identified this new suspect as James Sammy Paolo, a 40-year-old Lebanese.

"We believe there's solid evidence against him," he said.

I arrive on Thursday and will be going to soi 22 and also Cowboy-

But I might breeze into Pattaya or catch a flight to Krabi if this stuff keeps up-

Basically - (as long has been said ) "we let the terrorists win if we give in "

So I intend to create a Balance of venturing out to the places I like- and taking time to maybe unwind on a beach -

Bangkok will stay on my list-

The greatest concern I have is the Israelis -

I dont trust them - and their agents might well coordinate an attack and level the blame on Iran-

Which serves the old "beat up arabs " purpose the USA and Israelis want to continue to push-

But I have thought about it -

If an attack comes it would be more likely to happen in the Ko San road area-

Our lives in death dont povoke the same out pouring -

Take away daughters and mothers and a few female friends - most of us are hated by the western female population-

Killing sex tourists would roundly even meet feminist approval back in Farang countries (though muted)

No they will belt the back packer kids in party mode-

That will cause a hell of alot more outcry!

::

Ko san road is a risk-

And I wont be hanging around the airport long (where you leave or check in)

Bangkok is a really silly place for terrorists to target Americans, there are hardly any there. Germans, Brits, Italians, Australians, yes...but Americans? We hardly ever leave our borders to begin with (which is part of our problem...we know nothing about the rest of the world yet insist on trying to tell people in other countries how to live their lives), let alone venture as far as Asia.

Never knew that Soi 22 was so popular with foreigners. Now with the demise of Bourbon, there wouldn't be a lot of Americans left there.

... I read that the US and Israeli governments are witholding from the Thais detailed jackets on these guys, probably because the Thais simply cannot be trusted... Thailand is interminably corrupt - politicians, bureaucrats, Royal Thai Police, your cook, and all.

... they might be playing their cards close to their vests until enough is known that they can then safely disclose whatever is necessary to lay on a charge more serious than criminal possession of a Class I listed chemical.

... working in environments like Thailand must be the shits for seriously competent, professional enforcement agents... can you imagine going into hot locations with the Royal Thai Anything at your back?

... which reminds me of that great Gen. Patton quote, that he'd rather face two German tank divisions on his own, than one German tank division in front of him and a French division behind... don't mean to start any trash talk (as the French Resistance were absolute f***ing rock star heroes)... but, my point is: can the Royal Thai Police be trusted to do anything more than carry the waterbags?

... I'm guessing the foreign agencies after these terrorists have the full measure of the kinds of local forces with whom they have to work here in Thailand.

Report from Bangkok Post dated 20 January 2012 :-

Atris swears he's innocent, accuses Mossad -
Israel has framed me, he tells Swedish reporter
===================================

The detained Lebanese Hezballah terrorist suspect told a Swedish journalist that he is totally innocent and accuses the Israeli secret service of being behind the large cache of explosive materials uncovered by Thai police earlier this week.

"I am 100 per cent not guilty of the terror crimes I am accused of," said Hussein Atris, who was last week arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport on suspicion of preparing to carry out a terrorist attack in Bangkok.

"Much of the materials police found in my storage had been placed there, probably by Israeli secret service Mossad," the 47-year-old suspect said in an interview with Bangkok-based Swedish reporter Jan Kallman of the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

On Monday, police raided a three-storey commercial building in Samut Sakhon's Mahachai area and found 4,380 kilogrammes of urea-based fertiliser and 290 litres of ammonium nitrate.

"One evening I was taken out of prison, was placed in a car that drove off with me to a house somewhere. In there, I was interrogated by three men who apparently came from the Mossad. I have their first names. They claimed that I lied about various things," said Mr Atris.

"I am a Shiite Muslim, but not part of the Hezbollah. However, I live in an area outside Beirut where they are strong. I also have sympathy on the left, I also voted for the Social Democrats when I lived in Sweden. Maybe it made me suspicious in Mossad's eyes. They kept an eye on me."

He told the Aftonbladet reporter that he ended up in Thailand because he had a partner in Lebanon who imported Asian goods. However, he decided to get a Swedish passport so he would be able to travel without hassle.

"I feel pretty good in spite of the situation. And I miss contact with my family in Lebanon. It is only now here in the prison that I have been able to read some papers and get to know more details of my arrest. I have been treated well by the Thai police. But this is a conspiracy. I deal only with ordinary business operations."

On Tuesday, the court ordered Mr Atris detained in Bangkok Remand Prison for 12 days. This detention period can be extended six times, each for a period of 12 days, by which time the public prosecutor must either bring charges against him or he will be released by the court.
