I would be a little worried that the Iranians visiting for "health", may indeed improve their health but significantly lower the life expectancy of many in the south of Thailand.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 10 May 2007 :-

$13 bln tourist windfall predicted
========================

18 Asia Pacific destinations are expected to witness a $110 billion increase in tourism revenue over the next three years, compared with 2006 figures, according to a report released by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (Pata) on Thursday.

China and Thailand will be among the biggest beneficiaries, gaining $36 billion and $13 billion in increased tourism spending between the years 2007 to 2009, said Pata.

Other markets likely to receive strong receipts growth over the forecast period include Malaysia with close to 11 billion, Korea with 7 billion, and Macau SAR with 5 billion, the report said.

The forecasts were based on projected tourist traffic in the Asia-Pacific region, which includes both Asia and the Americas, compared with traffic and the average annual income generated in 2005 and 2006, said John Koldowski, managing director of Pata's Strategic Intelligence Centre.

"There has been a dramatic increase in the route network established by low-cost carriers throughout the region which is making it a lot much more accessible and cheaper in relative terms for first time travellers, and that's having a stimulatory affect as well," said Koldowski.

Thailand, in particular, is expected to experience a strong comeback over the next three years after a fall-off in tourism caused by the December 26, 2004 tsunami that killed more than 5,300 people, half of them foreign tourists, in Phuket and Phang Nga - two of Thailand most popular beach destinations.

Results of the most recent Asia Travel Intentions Survey 2007 revealed that 9 per cent more travellers were looking at Asia as their next travel destination, and one in five ranked Thailand as their most likely destination with 84 per cent of Swedish respondents most likely to consider the destination for a holiday within the next two years.

"While people were keeping away from Phuket because of post-tsunami fears, they were discovering other parts of Thailand, so now Phuket is back but they've also discovered places like Pattaya and Hua Hin and so forth," said Koldowski.

He said the impact of Thailand's current political instability caused by the September 19, 2006, coup was likely to be minimal on tourist arrivals.

"There was a slight blip but for the grander scheme of things that's going to be hardly noticeable," said Koldowski.

Thai tourism earnings rise
====================

Tourism revenues are rising in Thailand, Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani said Monday, and the government this week will discuss strategies to further boost tourism, Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani said Monday.

Speaking after a video conference with the prime minister, Mr. Suvit said he had presented a status report on Thailand's tourism in 2006 and the first three months in 2007 to Gen. Surayud Chulanont.

During this year's first quarter, Mr. Suvit said, tourism income rose by 9.6 per cent to Bt142 billion (US$4.1 billion) compared to the same period last year, while the number of foreign visitors rose to 3.82 million tourists, an increase of 5.4 per cent.

The number of tourists from the Middle East and Europe was up by 30 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.

Mr. Suvit reported that the government committee on national tourism policy will meet Tuesday at Government House to map out tourism strategies to boost high-end tourism for the second half of this year.

Regarding the planned construction of a man-made island off the island resort of Phuket for billionaires to moor their yachts while on holiday, which was inspired by a visit there by American billionaire Bill Gates,
the minister said it will help promote a good image for Thai tourism.

He said Thailand supports foreign investment in the sports and tourism sector, but that more details of this project must be studied further.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Pornsiri Manoharn said the plan for an artificial offshore marina demonstrates the investor's impression regarding the beauty of beaches along the Andaman coast and confidence in the safety of Thailand for well-to-do visitors on holiday.

TAT's campaign has succeeded in reviving tourism along the Andaman coast after the area was hit by tsunami in 2004, she said.

Phuket tourism has grown quickly since then, Mrs.Pornsiri added, by the addition of one thousand more rooms to accommodate tourists, amounting to a total of 32,000 tourist rooms here.

A survey in 2006 by FutureBrand magazine revealed that Thailand was voted by tourists across the globe as the tourist attraction first in giving value-for-money worldwide, and was ranked the world's ninth most beautiful tourist destination.

Bill and Melinda Gates sailed to Phuket by luxury yacht in April and were reportedly impressed by the beautiful white sandy beaches there.

More European tourists, fewer Asians
===========================

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reports that international tourist arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Airport during the first four months of the year increased by 2.61 per cent compared to same period last year.

According to the authority, 3.4 million visitors arrived, up from 3.3 million in the first four months of last year.

However, the number of Asian visitors, which represents 49 per cent of the total number of arrivals,, fell 6.6 per cent to 1.5 million.

Japanese arrivals fell 4.7 per cent from 402,998 to 384,043, China's 250,998 visitors for the period reflects a 22.5-per-cent drop from 2006's 323,878, but the number of South Korean visitors grew 4.1 per cent from 283,140 to 294,751.

TAT governor Phornsiri Manoharn said European markets had been showing strong growth, especially Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Russia and Scandinavia. Arrivals from the overall European market climbed 12.94 per cent from 987,005 to 1,114,770 during the four-month period.

In order to attract international tourists to the country, the TAT plans to spend Bt20 million on TV ads overseas.

Phornsiri said the five-minute advertising slots would be shown this July to present "Amazing Thailand".

With a limited budget, the TAT will shift from events to advertising campaigns, which reach a larger market.

Phornsiri said TAT's Beijing office expected its TV adverts to reach 45 million viewers in key cities including Kunming, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenyang.

The office is also planning to attract more charter flights from China and will organise a South China road show in August.

In Japan, the TAT is in partnership with key telecom company NTT DoCoMo to promote Thailand though an SMS campaign potentially reaching 20 million mobile-phone users. Winners of an SMS Thailand quiz will get prizes including trips to the Kingdom.

TAT's Tokyo office is planning to run TV adverts on five city trains from June to December, with an expected audience of 10 million.

Thailand near bottom on Peace Index
============================

Thailand is one of the least peaceful countries in the world and is ranked behind neighbours Indonesia and Cambodia in a new assessment, the Global Peace Index.

Out late last month, the GPI places Thailand at 105 of 121 countries on the index. Indonesia is at 78 and Cambodia 85. In the Asia-Pacific region only Burma, India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan score worse.

The GPI describes Thailand's state of peace as "very low", with risks of violent demonstrations, terrorist acts and a high level of violent crime and political instability.

The index scores countries from one to five, with one being a "very high state of peace". Thailand scores 2.49, just a little better than Burma at 2.52 and is ranked at 108. Norway is the world's most peaceful country with a score of 1.35. It is followed by New Zealand at 1.36, Denmark with 1.37, Ireland at 1.39 and Japan on 1.41.

The least peaceful country on the list is Iraq. Its score is 3.43. Next to bottom was Sudan at 3.182. Israel scored 3.03, Russia 2.90 and Nigeria rated 2.89.

The United States also didn't fare too well, being ranked 96 with 2.317, just ahead of Iran at 97th with 2.32. The Economist Intelligence Unit and an international team of academics and peace experts compiled the list. It was the first time any index had ranked nations by their peacefulness.

It uses 24 indicators - including military spending, access to "weapons of minor destruction", guns, small explosives, corruption and respect for human rights.

The index is tested against a range of potential drivers, or determinants of peace - including levels of democracy and transparency, education and material well-being.

It uses the latest figures from a wide range of sources, including the World Bank and the United Nations.
