I have learned that the drug "Azithromyzin" is used for most STDs . Are these possible to buy from any farmacy or only from clinics? It is also used for clamydia, wich is hard to detect, so it could be nice to take  as a precoution when returning home.

I heard that you can use Dioxycillan (spelling?) for Clamydia - which is also prescribed for people travelling to areas where Malaria is present.

There is a very basic and vital rule about antibiotic use:

NEVER TAKE ANTIBIOTICS PROPHYLLACTICALLY. That means preventatively, 'just in case'. And

ALWAYS TAKE THE FULL COURSE OF TREATMENT. Don't stop when the symptoms abate. Keep taking them at the recommended dosage till they run out and if a refill is called for DO IT.

If you don't follow these rules, all you are doing is breeding drug resistant strains of bacteria, which is a very bad idea.

These rules are WIDELY violated in Thailand for economic reasons, pharmacies sell pills in small quantities and people don't go back and get more when symptoms are gone (but the infection isn't quite over.)

BAD NEWS!

Don't take antibiotics unless you know you have an infection (because you have been diagnosed, self diagnosis does not count). And then take them all the way so as not to make resustant strains.

PS

Doxycillin is indeed used as a malarial prophyllaxis, particularly for chloroquine resistant Plasmodium/falciparum malaria. It IS also an antibiotic best known under the name Vibramycin. Follow the directions. This is the LAST effective agent against the deadliest form of malaria that is endemic in Cambodia, Burma, and border areas of Thailand esp Mae Sot, Koh Chang, Aranyaprathet, etc. And already the disease is showing signs of deveoping some resistance. Take the whole course. US CDC and WHO have detailed info on the Internet about this. If you need a malarial prophylaxis, READ THEM.

I like to add one thing to Chateaujade's post.

DO NOT take Anitbotics until you have consulated a doctor.

Lost a very dear friend due to anitbotic/drug interaction.  Don't play with it.

And most importantly (IMHO), ***do not be afraid*** to get checked.  Do not get upset and do your research.  I *thought* I had one from girls in Canada and it was
NOTHING.  As a matter of fact, it was only *anxiety*.

I feel better than ever and I'm much more educated by doing the research.  My safe sex is only safer now.

Yes, some people have allergic reactions varying from mild to life threatening to various antibiotics. For example allergies to Penicillin are fairly common.

And Yes, interactions between various pharmaceuticals including antibiotics can be serious.

This really isn't something for the lay person to decide for himself, and the typical Thai pharmacist isn't going to do a workup on you the way a doctor will, so leave it to the doctors. They are affordable in Thailand.

I have a friend who is a fellow teacher here in Korea, that upon leaving Thailand, he takes a dose of antibiotics.  He says it will clear up any infection he may have been exposed to while there.  He says that between doing that and practicing safe sex, he has never come down with anything.  So there may be something to it.

Great points everyone!! I agree with Chateaujade, Gyaos, and Foodlover.

It is not smart, nor safe to take/prescribe medicine to oneself unless you are a doctor.  With potential for allegic reactions or other complications due to combining medications, it's just safer to ask before taking.

And, YES. Don't be afraid to get checked out by your doctor. It might just be anxiety, or maybe something more serious.

I went a week before I saw my doctor when I did not feel well. Thought I had something  serious, but after all the tests, it was just anxiety. But I drove myself crazy wondering!!

Never-the-less, consult a physician before taking over the counter medication.

TNG, there is something to it and it's bad.

Your friend is not taking antibiotics properly and that's a fact. A simple medical FACT. He is running the risk of hurting himself and others by creating resistant strains of bacteria. Period.

Crack a book, look into it, it's simple truth.

Unfortunately, some pharmacies would sell u drug so called for preventive measure. One for prevention and another for curing if you hit jackpot. Ask them they will recommend but again it is wrong not seeking medically consultation first. Some opt for it because of avoiding embarrassment.
