In all tourism books or websites (at least french) they highly recommend a paludism treatment when visiting Thailand, so each time I go I have my paludism treatment with me, very boring to follow : must be 2 pills a day at regulars hours and be continued 2 weeks after the come back. If 1 pill is forgotten1 day, all the treatment is null. The secondaries effects are really bad (give me bad headaches and stomac problems)
I wonder if this is really necessary and think I will not get bored with that again for my next trip, I just wonder if you all get bored with this kind of treatment too or if it's just bullshits

As long as you stay in Bangkok there is absolutely no need for this.

Thank you VB

Shall I understand that I need this for outside BKK ?

I'll go BKK and Phuket, then I might go to KoSamui, KoChang and Isaan and probably Cambodia, better to have the treatment again ?

Yes if you go to Isaan and Cambodia it will be smart to take it.
Have been to Thailand now close to 100 times and only took it the first 3-4 times.

You are talking about Malaria, right?

Risk is extremely low, to nil, if you hang out in Bangkok or Pattaya. In fact, coastal regions have extremely low risk.

When you go inland, you should consider malaria prophylactics, though there are better (and easier) treatments than the product you decsribed, these days.

Here in Holland they only give you one shot every 5 years for thailand. Now I was not going on a jungletrek so if you are, you might need some more medicine.

I don't know what your pills do, but if you need them daily it sounds like malaria. Well I have never seen any mosquito's outside of the loby of Jomtiem Grand Palace in thailand. So book an other hotel in Pattaya and you should be safe. Again if you are going to play Tarzan it could be wise to take the pills.

Siem Reap was mosquito heaven at night. I don't know if malaria is a risk there, but I did not take anything and I did not get it. But the shits that I did get.

You said you were going places where most falangs don't go, so it could be wise. But I think I will take the risk and not take the pills. UNLESS somebody says otherwise ofcourse.

No problem - Malaria's only something that stays with you FOR LIFE, so when you have the occasional Malaria attacks, pretty much immobilizing you, just consider how smart it was that you saved yourself the 'hassle' of having to take those pills every day for a few weeks...

Natch.... it's worth the 'hassle'

Ofcourse I know what malaria means. It was just that when I went in to take the shot. They only asked me 2 questions. What country (thailand ofcourse) and then they only wanted to know if I would go in to the jungle. So I guess that that means that if you stay in rural (civilised) land in thailand, nothing smaller then a wild buffalo is potentialy harmful. Or atleast in their books. I don't think that willy snipping hookers are a hazard for which you can take a shot.

P.s. I did not went to a QUACK round the corner. (I had to get this one in somehow ) I went to the hospital that is an authority in this field in my country, with a special building just for these things.

I thought that if you get infected then treated then that's it, gone! You may have flu like symptoms for a wee while after but the Malaria has gone, if it's been treated correctly.

In the dim distant, many people assumed that they had recurring bouts of Malaria but really they were either not properly treated in the first place or they got infected again by another bite!

I reckon the best idea if yer goin' into an area where you think there will be infected mossies (e.g. outside of urban areas, coastal areas etc.) is to take precautions that don't involve injestin' some meds. Try wearin' a long sleeved shirt, trousers etc., coverin' up yer skin especially at dawn and dusk. Spray Deet (could be nasty on some folks skin) or citronella on yer clothes and get a mossie net for the night. Mossies usually only fly about a meter above the ground so they tend to bite yer legs etc., and some folks believe that they are attracted to CO2 emmissions from us, lot of different beliefs on what attracts mossies!

Oh yes, stay away from standing water and other prospective mossie nurseries like, car tyres or any container that could have standing (stagnant) water in it.

Cheerio
PS: I remember readin' somethin' like the above in the newspaper just before the mossie season in Ottawa!
