I think Bumrungrad is one of the best hospital in Asia. However, all things do change. I am just updating on some observations I've noticed at the hospital to hopefully assist in your experience there.

I just went today for a simple monger checkup. The usual HIV and urine test to make sure I am healthy. I always wear a condom so it should be fine. One thing I noticed was that the hospital definitely wants an ID for HIV test. I have been coming to this hospital for 5 years now. They have my passport information and I have had many HIV and other tests before as part of the executive physicals. I think it is a recent thing that the Thais are trying to emulate "western" practices. JFYI. I guess somewhere along the way they lost my passport copy that they took. I had to bring my passport after the blood sample to enable them give me the results.

I have noticed many many more people of arabian descent at the hospital. I would say they account for approximately 20% of the patient load, some department maybe even more. Nothing of interest in that, except some of them are more aggressive than other people. One of them grabbed me as a friendly gesture since I was moving to another seat as he sat next to me. He didn't want to put me out. I just like to sit by myself when I am in a hospital.

Bumrungrad is a production line. I was in there last week getting an annual medical and the speed in which they turned me around was amazing. At one point there were three of us getting our blood taken in one room at the same time, the door was open with a crowd of people outside sat waiting and watching the whole proceedings.
I'm just glad I wasn't getting a prostate check.

I go to Samitivej and it is much quieter than Burumgrad.

Cut-and-paste at its classic best.

The "cutter" don't even bother to edit the number of delivery rooms and caesarian suite rooms.

Which is the original version?

Just avoid the other one, a hospital who has to cut-n-paste its services from another doesn't look too promising...

For me, the missus and me get all our medical needs from Singapore, piece of mind... less the boring short flight to and fro..

I have always been cautious about the medicine prescribed at Thai hospitals. There seems to be hardly or no regulation. On a recent visit to Bumrungrad factory I was prescribed with a NSAID (anti-inflammatory). As usual I asked if there were any side-effects and of course the answer was no. After a little research I discovered that it has been banned in the US, Europe, Australia and some other Asian countries due to serious side-effects.

It's not the first time this has happened.

Always worth doing some research.

This is quite common but you need to put some perspective around it. In the US, certain COX2 inhibitors (NSAIDS) like Celbrex and Vioxx and others were pulled off the market however there are many medications that you can buy in many other countries that are not sold in the US. Some of the COX2 are back on the market in the US.

I am not going to get into some long winded diatribe on this but in the end, no matter whether you are in the US or anywhere else, you need to be aware of the meds you are taking. I know people that prefer Celebrex as their NSAID of choice, regardless of the potential risks.

Somewhat related....I picked up a nasty bronchical issue and when to see them today. In discussing treatment options (anti-biotics) he said " amoxycillian is like candy. it is useless for most things here in Thailand".

hmmm....gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling, doesn't it?

Bumrungrad has raised its prices in line with what its major clientele, Westerners and Arabs, are willing to pay. It is the subject of a VERY nasty lawsuit alleging total malpractice in the death of a Westerner. Caveat Emptor!

Samitevej is also relatively expensive for LOS. TGF says it is the hospital of choice for Thai rock stars and politicos.

Yan Hee is by far the best all around that I have found. Just on the other side of the river, a huge complex, every specialty, and at Thai prices. So big that the messenger/file girls rollerblade throughout. A special added feature in their cute little miniskirt uniforms.

The surge in Arab visitors to LOS has a lot to do with Saudi having lifted its ban a few months ago.

There was a ban on healtful living?

Seriously, even at raised prices, Bumrungrad is still a bargain from a western perspective. There's an interesting article in Newsweek:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15365149/site/newsweek/

Regardless, my medical file so far is kept with Bumrungrad, and while I may shift some more regular maintenance work to another facility, to save some Baht, I'll still use Bumrungrad for my imediate needs, or any more urgent situations.

Their comprehensive health check used to be a bargain, but has gotten more and more expensive, so I'll probably explore Sami or BNH for that. Yanhee has a great reputation for plastic surgery, if I were to need that, though Bum is simply convenient dur to its location for a quick visit when an ill plagues...

Either way, it's still significantly less than any of the alternatves around.

Quite true.... I had to get an MRI w/contrast recently. In NYC, this cost btw 1500-2000 USD at a top facility.

Bumrungrad charges 18,000 baht

but I went to Prachachuen Imaging (more locals) but same MRI machines as BH and paid 10,000!

a little here and there, I don't mind but 8000 baht less for the same procedure is nothing to sneeze at
