Report from Bangkok Post dated wednesday 10 October 2007 :-

Thailand has region's fifth worst problem with obesity
========================================

Thailand has the fifth most serious problem with obesity among the Asia-Pacific rim countries, according to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report. About 10 million of the country's 65 million people, including many soldiers, are rated fat due to a lack of exercise and over-consumption of fast food.

Health Department chief Narongsak Angkasuwapala said Thailand ranked fifth after Australia, Mongolia, Vanuatu and Hong Kong among the countries with the biggest overweight and obesity problems in the region.

The latest survey by the Thai Health Systems Research Institute concluded that about 10 million people living in Bangkok and other cities, particularly office workers, had problems with weight and obesity.

The problem is linked to the increase in the number of patients suffering from heart disease, diabetes and cancer during the past five years.

Office workers are not the only ones with weight problems.

The armed forces face a similar problem, with up to 24% of 12,227 soldiers at Supreme Command headquarters found to be overweight or obese.

''The obesity problem directly affects work output and we have to do something to prevent them from developing this unhealthy condition, to benefit both their health and their work,'' said air force Grp Capt Rit Aumpunsang an official at the Supreme Command.

Overweight soldiers were encouraged to participate in a weight-loss programme focusing on exercise and eating healthy food, he said.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, about 11,000 Thais die of heart disease each year, and about 45,000 as a result of blood clots in the brain.

So far this year alone, there have been about 150,000 cases of people suffering from paralysis caused by high blood pressure.

Wannee Nitiyanon, the head of the Khon Thai Rai Poong network, which campaigns against obesity, said state and private organisations need to be more concerned about the incidence of fatness and obesity among their employees.

The problem could affect work output in the long run.

Based on WHO data, an estimated one billion people around the globe face a weight problem, with 300 million considered obese.

The global health organisation forecasts that the number of overweight and obese people in the world will reach 1.5 billion by 2015, unless there is a serious and effective health promotion campaign.
