Back in 1976 I saw my dad fell after a heart attack. It was traumatic watching the person you look up to looking so helpless. He started chewing pickles trying to get himself addicted to something else while cutting down on the number of cigs per day. 5 years later he'd stop smoking altogether. He's still around now.
I don't smoke, but can I like get addicted to your club, Marc?

The smartest people are those who never smoked. I packed it up in 1991, but no matter how long you have stopped, you will always be one smoke away from starting again.

Thanks for referring to me as smart, Mr. Breathless. I really appreciate that.
I never took up smoking because I am basically too lazy. I really sympathise with anyone who does smoke - the people I know who smoke have either just given up (for the 86th time), are just about to give up or have just resumed after having failed at giving up. I don't think there are many people who actually smoke because they want to (although I will probably be shot down and proved wrong shortly).

Me mate's old man Harry died of emphysema (sp?) years back. Helluva shock meeting this wreck of a human being who'd been so lively a few yrs before and a 60 a day man to bot.He was on oxygen and totally fcked. He'd get wife to do a chore or pop to shops or make an excuse to slip out and there he was, wheeling his O2 supply into the shed with him to have another gasper. 0% quality of life for last 5 yrs of miserable existence on this planet.
Put you off for life.
By the way, what a discussion between grown up men who sleep with probable HIV/AIDS infected women and pay for it. Just feeling down and incredibly stooopid after meeting UK/Aussie health workers in BKK last week who totally wrecked me for my cavalier attitude to sanook, and that's WITH condom, altho' often BBBJ.

AP, I don't think you can compare the risks of smoking and whoring. If you're a smart punter you can reduce your risks of getting a fatal disease to nearly zero; there is no way to safely consume tobacco.

Hey Van Jay,
You better be right (and I believe you are). As I just checked my quit meter and caculated that I have saved enough for 5 long times including the bar fine since quiting 
Now there is a really motivating reason to stop smoking.

Giving up any vice for the primary purpose of saving money... No, I think that's a bad plan. You sholud always try to make more money and keep your vices.
The point to be made about smoking is that it's not 5 or 10 years off the end of your life that you lose, it's 5 or 10 years out of the middle.
In the interest of full disclosure I'll mention that I account for a carton of Marlboros Lights per week. I'd rather have Rothschilds, English Ovals or Balkan Sobranjes however.
I smoked for years, quit for years, then decided smoking was better than non-smoking.

Is the stop smoking patch and or gum available in Thailand. Thinking about quitting after the holiday. Would be a good time to quit since I have to go without for 25 hours on the return trip.

I almost never smoke outside Thailand, and smoke when I'm there, leave the box in the bin at the airport and forget it again.
Just one of the treats of Thailand for me.
