".Weils disease is carried in rat piss and many people have caught this from drinking from beer bottles. It's suggested to always wash your beer bottles and cans before you drink, but not really practical"

So I have to get the bartender to wash the bottle before she/he opens it. I suppose this weils thingy can get onto bottle openers as well so I have to make sure that's steam cleaned too, eh? Then I have to make sure the glass is steam cleaned (just a suggestion) but don't I still have a problem from the airborn bugs that Bkk Banger was talking about earlier then I have to make sure the bartender hasn't got anything nasty.

So my choices are get the shots or wipe the bottle top with my hand and start drinking.

Cheers, hic!

Brocher,

There is a reason beers like Kloster come with foil over the top.

Shots that you really shouldnt leave hom without are Hep A and Polio. Yuo stand a reasonably good chance of catching them, and vacination is highly effectove
Highly Recommended is,lower chances of catching (about 1 in 100K for typhoid) and vacination is reasonably effectice
Hep B
Typhoid

THey are all nasty diseases - and can be generally avoided through vacination. You can now get a combined shot that covers you for Hep and thphiod, and only needs boosting every 5-10 years. Get the shots.

I never bother with shots (Africa / SEA / Indo etc) or Malaria pills... Just been diagnosed as having Typhoid for the last 10 weeks !! Doc was stunned I have not been hospitalized etc.

I did not have the heart to tell him I thought it was just daily hangovers and that 6AM is normal bedtime even with Typhoid !!

Wow, I guess so much for 'not bothering'.

Anyway, my over-cautious preparations included vaccinations for:

- Hep A
- Hep B
- Polio (check myself, I was still 'good to go')
- Smallpox (check myself, I was still 'good to go')
- Typhus
- Tetanus (refresher)

In addition, I *always* use antibiotics prophylactically (which some smart-ass folks strngly discourage), but I found it to be highly effective. I start two days before I leave and take them for the entire trip, and discontinue 4 days after I return. This works for my average trips of 7-15 days. I also found it far cheaper to pick up a 30 day supply of cipro locally, instead of bringing it from the US. While my meds only cost me $10 via Kaiser, grabbing cipro in LOS is a lt cheaper than OTC in the US.

When you head up-country, get malaria medication as well.

I drink lots of ice tea, and water, and have a tendency to not worry about environments (i.e. I eat from the same table, communally as folks over there without worry. The cipro allows me not to worry. As an added precaution, it also helps to shield you against some other infections you might otherwise catch from p4p activities).

YMMV, of course.

Harry

Wow, compulsive infectious disorder comes to mind.

All my visits and now living here and all my visits to any other countries, I have never had a shot for anything, never taken drugs as a counter measure and never had malarial treatments etc.

I have, touch wood (tap brain), never caught anything. My boy is living here, he has nothing over and above the normal childhood vaccinations.

We all eat anywhere and are not to particular with the tap water.

A little story... sevceral years ago when I was living in Vanuatu, a group of brothers and their wifes were running a small outer island resort, it was a malaria destination, when they all moved there to take over and run the place, 2 of the 3 brothers and all of the 3 wifes/girlfriends got anti malarial treatment/injections. the 3rd brother took nothing, not even the oral treatments, guess what, all 5 caught malaria and the one that took nothing, did not. There might be a lesson there.

NM, you will die.

Harry, you will die.

The only question is, of what?

(Not being cheeky, after all we will all die)

I always take vaccinations as I want to lower my chances of catching some nasty disease and I know the vaccination is the best way of covering certain diseases which I wish to avoid.

However I also know that there are lots of other bugs about. I have a theory that eating Thai food on the street twice a week builds up a gut which is innurred to pathogens in the atmosphere, the water and the food.

In the last 7 years I have only had 5 attacks of serious dyssentry.

To put not too fine a point on it, I only count it if I sh_t myself twice in one week. (Normally my bowel movements are strong and firm, with a quality homogenous texture )
