I thought that if you get infected then treated then that's it, gone! You may have flu like symptoms for a wee while after but the Malaria has gone, if it's been treated correctly.

Judge if it's worth the risk - though, yes, there's less of a risk in metropolitan areas...

The little mosquito is also the biggest killer in the world. More people die of malaria and other mosquito transmitted diseases around the world than from std's.

CDC Malaria Risk by Country:

...Thailand: Limited risk in the areas that border Cambodia, Laos, and Burma. No risk in cities and major tourist resorts (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pattaya, Phuket Island, and Ko Samui.) Special note: Travelers to the border areas of Thailand/Burma and Thailand/Cambodia should see the special Thailand box below for additional information.

...Most travelers to Thailand are not at risk for malaria and do not need to take an antimalarial drug. Travelers to the border areas of Cambodia, Laos, and Burma should take an antimalarial drug.

If travel is to the Thailand/Burma border or the Thailand/Cambodia border, then either atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline should be used. Mefloquine would not be recommended in these border areas.

My doctor prescribed atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone) for a trip that I may take to Nigeria. From what I've read, Malarone is the preferred anti-malaria drug, reasonably effective with side-effects not as bad as others. I haven't taken it yet. I will if I ever travel in an area of malaria risk. I would follow the recommendations to use repellent and limit exposure to mosquitos as well.

I received and took Malarone when I went to udonthani, with a trip to Laos. I also made sure I was properly sprayed with deet. I wasn't even aware I took Malarone, that's how little it affected me... though check with your doctor for allergies or alternates.

Considering the effects of Malaria, and how it affects your liver, spleen and other internal organs, a minor bit of precaution is worth a lifetime of health - except in the case of Ravan. It's just a tiny mosquito, you're right, enjoy your trip.

On my first trip to Thailand, my doctor in SD gave me some large pink pills he said were for malaria. I took the faithfully. After a couple days I developed kidney problems. I phoned him in his office from the emergency room here in Thailand. The first thing he said was "stop taking the malaria pills". Turns out that they are very hard on your kidneys, and if you get the slightest touch of dehydration, you can develop serious problems.

A three day stay in a hospital where no one spoke English. What a living nightmare. Food was good though.

Lemme guess -- you couldn't stop drinking alcohol, while taking the meds.

Didn't read the instructions, did you?

Just a word of caution. There has been a new outbreak of malaria in the Trat region in the last few months, with a few deaths.
