I had a test the other day at Bumrungrad.   830 baht.  1 hour for results.   I'm still negative!   I always feel like I have a new lease on life after getting those results.   I always wear a condom, but I still worry.

4-6 weeks is most common for detection of AB to the HIV virus.  At 3 months, most people that are infected will test positive.

Here is something I read at Border's today.  Some time in the 90s, surveys were done and they found that the most common mode of transmission for HIV was from unprotected heterosexual intercourse, over IV drugs and over anal.  They also found that 50% of the prostitutes were infected with HIV.  This estimate jumped up to %75 in the northwest portion of thailand.  Multiplication rates have come down a bit after some guy from BKK started to promote the use of condoms.  He also opened up a business in BKK called condon and cabbage.  He actually received some kind of reward for his good doings which resulted in LOS, losing the title of having the most %hiv infected per capita than any other country in the world.  Today, two or more other countries take the lead.

In this day in age, use a hat for intercourse.

i a l w a y s wear a condom having sex and i had an hiv test done twice - negative.
but what worries me, i got a paper from a friend ( which i have lost and i dont have it electronically) that told (as i can remember):
- the hiv-virus has n e v e r been found in a human body. only anti-cells. imagine !!!!!!!
- it is possible to test herpes positive, because they test the anti-cells there too and it is proven, that you can test herpes positive and not have it. herpes, as hiv, is a virus !!!!
- in different continents, the hiv tests are different. ( testing levels of t4-helper cells and anti-cells)

i am not a doctor and not a specialist in viruses and illneses. i do not want to motivate barebacking. i always protect myself. but this paper worried me alot. are we being lied at big time?? they told us for years that eggs (colesterol) were bad for us. have any brothers read similar things?

thanks

They are lying to you.  I personally know of other tests for early diagnosis of HIV.  I'll list them later in the pattaya forum under my thread "Strategic ordering of bed partners?" to try to draw more 411 to it since that forum is a little slow.

Never sure of how long it takes for the HIV antibodies to show up. Since there are so many conflicting reports out there.

For what it's worth ... I got tested twice. Once at 6 months and another time 7 months later. Figured I'd cover my bases either way. Both test came back negative.

the problem with testing for ABs (ELISA test) is that it takes a certain amount of time for these ABs to mature, up to 6 months!  Other tests look for the disease itself.

Here's the follow up from the above post.

Early dx
More recent testing using the combined analysis of p24 antigen and hiv antibodies titers (as per the 1-3 generation tests) have indicated earlier diagnosis, from somewhere around 1-2 weeks earlier. It is possible that this shortening on further evaluation might mean the reduction in the diagnostic window is down to about 2 1/2 months, since the vast majority produce antibodies to HIV withing 3 months. This new testing is different in that it tests not only the anibodies that your body's immune system but the p24 antigen on the VIRUS itself in the bloodstream.

Polymerase chain reaction amplifies the virus genenetic material and detetcts it. So PCR directly tests for the virus. Because of the amplification process one can detect fairly low levels of virus, in the newer PCR instruments down to 50 copies/ml. The newer tests test across a broad range of HIV types (A-G). I wanted to verify this, because older PCR assays depending on the primers, could (I think) detect type B which is the prevalent HIV type in the US and Europe.

I agree. And that's why I got tested twice. If it did not show up after 13 months, then my doctor said that I'm clean, unless inbetween that time I put myself at exposure risk.

glad to hear you are covering you ass and getting tested.  I know some people who are afraid of tests because of the possibility of bad news. not a good move for themselves and us hobbyist.

FOr piece of mind, 2 weeks post returning from LOS, I'm going to try that new pcr test they offer at a local testing facility in the san fernando valley that many PS use.  Then a normal blood test at 3 months.  If both are neg, I'll be pretty confident that I'm clean.  I get tested about 2-3x each year since some of the stds can be sypmtonless.

I drive my doctor crazy, but even though I am 99.999% sure I'm clean because I have not put myself at risk, I still get tested for std's including hiv during my annual check up. Just to be 100% sure for peace of mind.

Yes, I know. That's crazy, but I figure if they are going to take blood, then why not take a little bit more and test for everything. Besides the health insurance pays for it!! ha ha ha!!

I also think that it's up to each indivdual to make sure that they are clean, or at least know what they are carrying. And not to just leave it up to the bg / tg to say that they are clean so there is no risk of transiitting anything. Because I agree  100% that if you dont' get tested you don't know and could be the one transitting some sort of std to the females who in turn transmitt it to others.
