Abortion in Thailand is illegal.Except for a few categories.

No Hospital wants to know, apart from stating there are places that will, if you ask around.

These only help upto 12 to 16 weeks. After that its the dodgy Doctors and backstreet clinics. They charge serious money if farang is involved.Tried to help a young Thai lady who is a unmarried sister in law of a mate of mine.

Many Thai girls take this bottle of stuff which I am sure is just pure alcohol.

They believe it is like some kind of morning after pill. It is a wine coloured stuff in about a 500ml bottle.

A "hi-so" (hi-society) girl I was fooling around with in BKK was taking this stuff.

It actually makes them drunk. I was calling it "grans remedy" but she swore it worked.

I should have known better.

I received a call from a friend when I had moved onto Brasil a couple of weeks later that she was preggers. It nearly fu*ked up my whole trip/my life.

I didn't fool around. I sent $ to my friend to ensure the job got done as she kept on putting it off and not answering her phone.

She got an injection at the hospital, I think they charged extra because my friend went in with her (he is white).

About US$150.

Take care out there

Ok need help and enlightened advice here guys!

Need to find a legal, clean and professional abortion. Is abortion really illegal or not in Thailand? Just wrote to Bumrungrad, thru their website, to ask about this... Deeeeh!

What about PDA? Is it really as dodgy as was suggested by earlier poster?

If it is illegal in LOS, does anyone have any suggestion of a good clinic anywhere in the region - Singapore? Hong Kong? (expect not Malaysia or Philippines of course!) - where it IS legal?

Given circumstances... earliest advice much appreciated! Feel free to PM if you prefer. Thanks in advance.

That's a stressful decision to make, Wagie, for both parties. Especially in a mums-the-word place like Thailand.

You can go to the Meechai Clinic on Sukumwit (do a search, same soi as Darling Massage, I believe). This is the only Family Planning type place in Thailand that I have heard of. It will take a couple appointments, as they give the lady time to reconsider. The final appointment will take a couple hours or so. It hurts her. But it is safe. A couple thousand baht.

I suppose you could also order Misoprostal on line, and there are Thai sites from which to do it as well, but that makes me a little squeamish playing doctor at home. Though I guess it's widely done. No doctors that I know of in Thailand will give this kind of medicine, though who knows, the rich must get it.

As for the potion that the poster above, liam_gallagher, describes... It is an herbal and alchoholic concoction sold all over Thailand in every store, and is known as 'Ya Satree' or 'Lady's Medicine'. It is supposed to be good for women's problems, healthy, and to help menstruation occur regularly. So there is a very widespread misconception that in large quantities it will induce abortion. That and/or hard liquor. Lots of pregnant young girls get loaded or drink bottle after bottle of the stuff, hoping to induce their period. I suppose that the stress of frequent alcohol poisoning could induce something, but obviously it's not very effective. An old wives' tale.

Consider all. Take care. By the way, abortion is considered a very big sin in Thai religion, so if you go through with it, you should probably accompany your girlfriend (I'm assuming, pardon me if mistaken) to a temple for some kind of ablution afterwards; she would probably appreciate that.

Thanks Seajohn.

Truly tough decision, but she's made up her mind that this is what she wants to do, and I fully support her.

The LOS options seem few, probably because of the illegality of it. If so, then we're prepared to go where it can be done legally and safely.

Any suggestion of a good hospital in a good alternative country?

Thanks, a lot, including for the sympathy that transpires throughout your reply.

Hi Wagie...

Try this...

Population and Community Development Association (PDA)
Chairman : Mr. Mechai Viravaidya
6 Sukhumvit 12, Klongtoey, Bangkok 10110
Tel: 662-229-4611-28 Fax: 662-229-4632 E-mail: pda@pda.or.th

The clinic is open every day 7 days per week from 09:00 - 16:00pm for walk in abortions...

They won't accept anyone over 3 months...

But they will refer them to a hospital that may terminate the pregnancy if over 3 months...

Cost is around 2,500 Baht and you can make n additional donation to the foundation run by the Restaurant (Cabbages & Condoms) and this PDA organization...

They are in the same area of Soi 12 Sukhumvit Road.

Thanks TPE II.

If you have more information, please... Is the procedure performed in good health/sanitary conditions or is it more the kind of "hushed-up" thing? Do they give anesthesia and everything that we would "normally" expect for this?

That is the same place that I mentioned above. Yes, it is professional and safe. Khun Mechai has been the standard bearer for prophylactics, venereal disease prevention, sex education and family planning in Thailand. A truly good cause, in my opinion.

I don't know what kind of analgesic they use or don't use, but I do know that it is indeed a painful procedure for a few minutes as they beat or scrape out the zygote, or what have you.

Basically, they perform this procedure at this institute with the tacit understanding that having a child at this time would be injurious to the mother's mental health. That is the loophole in Thai law that they operate under.
