my opinion on the bum:

i had a complicated injury 2 years ago, went to see 2 of the best specialists in my home city, they told me to wait it out. went to the bum, they put me on a regeneration program for two weeks, the doc gave me additional exercises. two weeks after, my made great progress. her know-how was unbelievable.

so I am a fan and tell it to everybody.

being able to walk is normal to all of us, but if you can't it shows you how important it is...

chock di

Do not forget that Thailand, along with many Asian countries, it is all about show.

Look at Bumrungrad and it shows very well, extremely well.

But like the Thai attitude of looking like you are rich and successful, is better than actually being rich and successful, but looking like you are poor.

Just look at the amount of drugs they prescribe to you. Compare that to the normal cost of the drugs or equivalent drugs and many times it seems to be a hit and miss operation. They make more money on medicines than they do on doctor’s consultations, all for the kickback from the drug companies.

Nothing to do with the Bumrungrad (spelling?), but I experienced the service at the Rutnin Eye Hospital at Asoke three weeks ago.

I've got no reference point for experiencing hospitals - I've only been in them as visitors.

But I was very impressed by the quality of the place, its layout and facilities, its service standards and the quality of the care provided. The whole experience - including delicate outpatient eye surgery - was also incredible value for money.

I couldnt fault it.

Gave Bumrungrad another spin - different doctor this time.

Got checked out, had a few tests run.

Paid with a credit card:
Receipt states the exchange rate provided: 38.022. It then states the dollar amount.

30 minutes later I paid a hotel bill - this billed directly to the card, and let my card determine the rate. Rate provided, according to the capture listed on my bank webpage? 39.539.

So it seems that Bumrungrad is charging 3.84% for credit card usage. (39.539-38.022) /39.539=0.0384

Or at least their bank is doing so: Bangkok Bank.
Hotel uses Siam Commercial Bank.

----
Edit:
I should add that I saw nothing posted that indicated that there would be such a surcharge placed on the bill. If I had, I'd have paid cash.

TJ,

I don't quite get that. If you paid by a card you would be charged in Thai baht, burungrad would take the thai baht amount off your card. It's then up to your cc company to charge you in dollars, they do the conversion.

Are you saying that Bumrungrad actually gave you a price in US dollars and then charged you thai baht. if this is the case they are just trying to make some extra cash, and you should ask to be charge in thai baht.

The interbank rate did hit 38.08 on march 12 but has climbed since then but any company, cc card would obviously put in a buffer to guard against fluctuations.

First time I've seen it too.

The bill for Bumrungrad was in baht. 2800 something.
I gave them a credit card, as I did before.
They gave me a receipt.

Receipt states:
28xx baht
exchange rate: 38.0220
$7x.xx dollars

An examination of my bank's website shows that the dollar figure they provided was the dollar figure that I was billed.

So they did the conversion and billed me in dollars, I guess.

I've got no idea why, unless it's part of their "Bumrungrad International" bullshit that they've started. They changed all the signs, I noticed, to integrate the word "international" into their name. New since January.

My guess is it's just a way to skim a bit more money out of people.

well then that is taking the piss.

current interbank rate is sitting around 39.50 so yeah iut's making them an extra 3.8% odd.

Scobie might well point out it's only a few extra $$ and it's still excellent value for money, well maybe scobie and i'm not totally sure if you're british or aussie but in both those countries I have been treated extensively by world renowned surgons for free.

If they want extra money fine, charge a higher price from the start but just to know that the "best hospital" in Thailand is up for a bit of farang scamming, however insignificant it may be, certainly leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
