In 2001 Viagra (Penegra) got a stiff competitor: apomorphine hydrochloride (brand names: Ixense by Takeda, Japan and Uprima by Abbott, UK). Both products come in 2 or 3mg tablets. Apomorphine has nothing to do with Morphine.
Apomorphine works by suppressing a part of the brain that controls the body's smooth muscle contractions. Curbing those contractions allows more blood to flow throughout the body, and in particular through the male member. Viagra (Penegra) affects the vascular system more directly, temporarily widening arteries to achieve the same results.
Another difference is how the drugs are taken. While the Viagra (Penegra) pill is swallowed, the Ixense or Uprima lozenge is meant to dissolve under the tongue.
Because Ixense/Uprima bypasses the stomach to enter the bloodstream directly, it takes effect much more quickly than Viagra/Penegra, an average of about 20 minutes. Viagra/Penegra, by contrast, must be taken an hour or so in advance. The methods of ingestion also explain why Viagra/Penegra will lose its effectiveness when taken on a full stomach while Uprima or Ixense will not. Ixense or Uprima are easily available - on prescription - in Europe. Now the big question is: Are these brands or same same available in Bangkok? And at what price?
Takeda (www.takeda.com) lists a Thai subsidiary as:

Apomorphine is a synthetic opiate produced by treating morphine with concentrated hydrochloric acid or with zinc chloride. Therefore it is rather odd to claim that it has "nothing to do" with morphine, it is produced from morphine.
It has long been used as an emetic (to induce severe nausea) in humans and in dogs.

Viagra acts by tweaking the cyclic-GMP system, by antagonizing an enzyme. Viagra does not have any benefit for those men who do not have some clinical incapacity (erectile dysfunction) -- if you don't need it, don't take it, because all you can do to yourself in long term is damage, and in the short term, the only effect you might enjoy is a placebo one, for which it is rather expensive.
As to apomorphine, easy enough to see if priapism is a known side effect of its longstanding use as a vomit-inducer.
Anyone want to puke and f_ck at the same time?
In some circles this is appreciated as a "Roman shower" but that's just too kinky even for me.

I suspect that if one swallowed the lozenge of apomorphine the standard vomit-inducing effect would be had.
Under the tongue, going straight into the bloodstream, well, I'm skeptical about the erectile effect but, at least maybe the bypassing of the stomach may be what avoids the emetic effect.
In any case the Thai FDA would have to approve this stuff and they usually follow the lead of the US FDA. And I don't think the US FDA has signed off on this yet. Or if they have no one has heard about it -- and the pharm companies involved (certainly Abbott Labs) would ballyhoo the news.

Hi chateaujade,
guess the discussion about the pros and cons of Viagra / Penegra as well as of Ixense / Uprima will surely last for the next decade. Regardless of how many millions of people used it and were satisfied. ÝI actually do not want to engage in that discussion regarding Ixense or Uprima, although the FDA of the European Union approved them which simply means that those few thousands of people living in Europe can get it Ýon a prescription basis. Therefore it is quite legitimate to ask whether those people that have prescriptions for them can buy them in Bangkok too.
Therefore I would like to shorten my inquiry to the essential part: Are "Ixense" or "Uprima" or same same available in Bangkok? And at what price?

Last April, I was in BKK and I read in the BKK Post an article about Uprima being approved for sale in LOS. I talked to a pharmicist (s) the next day and she told me it was not approved for sale and showed me a letter written in Thai from FDA about Uprima (Uprima and Abbott was written in english). I hope it is approved as Viagra doesn't work very well with me.

I've read some of Pfizer's tech reports on Viagra, so I was a bit concerned about your comment: "... because all you can do to yourself in long term is damage." I wouldn't expect Pfizer to fess up to this -- what damage do you forsee (and have they published about this). I've used it off and on (at age 45 it has a noticeable effect), but I worry about two things: 1) development of tolerance of some sort, leading to dysfunction (physical or psychological); 2) chronic secondary effects.

Uprima/Ixense is definitely available in LOS - at a price. - Most hospitals stock it, for around 3200 THB/4 X 3 mg tablets.
And it works for me (can't use vit V or C 'cardiovascularly challenged'!) 15 or 20 minutes after slipping it under the tonge (tastes slightly sour, wonder what the effect is on kissing?) a fine upstanding friend is available for action.
My question is, as it has been available officially for so long, is it now possible to buy it streetside in, say Suk or wherever? - I know vit C there is much cheaper than elsewhere, and a friend without a heart problem bought the Indian version (Apcalis) for around 1200 THB for 4 tabs.
