Geez, I'de hate to be sitting next to you in the plane tomorrow, I haven't personally had to get perscription drugs in LOS b4, but I've heard that this is possible to achieve. Another option would be to postpone your plans and enjoy your holiday when you get better. Beefa

<Looking at his prescription the patient said...> If I knew the name of the stuff then I was always able to get 'em in the high street Pharm'. Really though it must be better to visit a reputable 'ospital and get checked out first. Hope yah feel better (or somebody!) soon. Cheers <the signature was totally indecypherable though>

Antibiotics are available, and they are usually cheap, especially if they are generics made in Thailand or Russia. In theory, there is no self-prescription in Thailand. You tell the pharmacist what your problem is, and they recommend an Rx. In practice, you can usually tell them what drug you want, especially if the symptoms you tell them about match the indications for the drug you want. If you don't know exactly what you need, I would recommend going to a good pharmacist who might actually have some idea of what they are talking about. Boots is probably a good choice (located in Emporium, Times Square Building, and other upscale locations around town). Avoid a pharmacy which is not air-conditioned (the medicine can deteriorate if not stored properly). Make sure you can communicate effectively with the pharmacist if you need help with a recommendation. Get a list of the drugs they recommend (write them down) and do some research on the internet to verify their recommendations. Keep in mind that if you simply have the flu, antibiotics generally don't help, unless you also develop an upper respiratory infection (nose, throat, lungs, etc) at the same time. However, there are four antiviral drugs (amantadine, rimantadine, zanamavir and oseltamivir) which have been approved in the USA for treatment of the flu. If taken within 2 days of getting sick, these drugs can reduce the symptoms of the flu and shorten the time you are sick by 1 or 2 days. They also can make you less contagious to others. All of these drugs must be taken for 5 days. Antiviral drugs are effective only against influenza viruses. They will not help the symptoms associated with the common cold or many other flu-like illnesses caused by viruses that circulate in the winter.
