I am staying in Pattaya and noticed some construction going onm in the building behind us. The maid would leave the window open during the day. I came down with a horrible sinus condition. Woke up in the night unable to breathe out of either nostril. Took a bunch of meds and nothing seemed to help. Figured it was the air-con and dry air. Slept without air-con and still had the problem. Suddenly it dawned on me that the roof they were tearing off was probably asbestos. I ask the hotel owner and he confurmed it. I since have changed rooms, but in the area bars many of the girls are complaining of simuilar problems and off sore throats.
I do not know how serious this is? I know it is most unpleasant. But I had a friend of 40 die of asbestosis. He was a construction worker and had been exposed over a period of time to it.
Any doctors or construction workers have any insight into the affects of asbestos. I am sure my lungs are doing all they can to fight it, but I want to know if I should do anything, as I have breathed it into my lungs.
I would venture to say that in Thailand's cities, wherever there is any demolition that is going on, that we get some exposure to the stuff.
Next time I get a hotel I will check out my surroundings and see if any demolition is being done.

There are a few different types of asbestos, each having various degrees of risk.
AFAIK the worst is 'Blue' asbestos, which is usually found in pipe lagging on old heating systems, with each fibre having a small barbed hook that anchors into the lining of the lung.
The type that is used in roofing carrys the least risk as it is contained in a cement, so binding the fibres together. The fibres are also different in that they dont have the hooked barb on the end.
I'm no expert, but this is what I have always been told. I come into contact with the stuff quite often with my work.
