I have had a question from a friend who is visiting the Kow Sok National Park in the South next month.

Does he and his family need to take malarial tablets ?

If bought in Thailand what is the cost ?

Cheers & Yassas

If you must move around at dusk or dawn (party time for mossies!) cover up (reduce the amount of exposed skin), wear a good anti-mossie lotion i.e. somethin' with loadsa DEET in it (90% in the stuff I got in Canada!), don't hang around near stagnant water and get a mossie net over yer bed at night.

No need for pills then, eh?

Cheerio
PS: Careful with the DEET!

Malaria is a risk all throughout SEA. However the need to take preventative measures depends on the specific area you are travelling in.

is the best place to check for current disease information and warnings.

Check with your local doctor, or if you are in the USA, check with the local county health department. They are the ones that keep track of the latest developments. They are the ones that also issue you your international shot record.

Don't try medicating yourself by buying the prophalaxis after you get to LOS to save money.. The usual dosage is to start 1 week before you go to the area, then for a week after you get beck in your home country.

If you chose to do it without a doctors advise, you run the risk of contributing to the prophalaxis becoming ineffective as so many of them have worldwide.

Your risk of contracting malaria is pretty low in LOS though, so unless you are getting out of the towns, and tourist areas, including the trekking areas, your risk doesn't outweigh the side effects of the prophalaxis.....they are nasty.

Well I was going to say UTFSE but I can't find the thread I was looking for?

Anyhow I don't like doxy, you burn easy from the sun when on it plus you have to take it for a long time. Also it has side effects.

I like Malarone (sp) you only have to take it one day before you enter the area and for one week after. Cost more but worth it IMHO. I found no side effects with this drug.

Most of Thailand is free of Malaria but not all parts, depends where you are going.

By the way the little guys that bite you and give you Malaria come out after the sun goes down but the ones that give you Dengy fever come out during the day.

I forget the name of the one you take once a week that gives you weird dreams but it is not effective against the form of Malaria in SEA so don't use it.

Don't mess with Malaria you don't want to get it. Take the pills if you are in a Malaria area. When I was getting eaten alive while in Cambodia and Vietnam I felt a lot better knowing I was taking the pills.

No part ot Thailand is free of malaria, it is just less frequently contracted away from the border areas and in large towns and cities.

Malarone is the current recommended anti-malarial as a prophylactic in SE Asia. Expensive in the west, available on prescription (£6.50 per course of tablets) in the UK. Probably available in BKK, but don't know how much. Online, Malarone is £2.15/tablet. Dose: 2 tablets per day for two days before arriving in risk area, one tablet per day while in risk area and continue one tablet per day for one week after leaving risk area.

Manufacturer's website:
http://www.malarone.com/

UK Online pharmacy:

I'm only going to use it for my upcoming trip to the Kwai River and Thai-Burma War Museum, not for the BKK, Pattaya or Phuket stages of the tour.
