Apple's iPhone luring people to ditch rival phones

* 1 in 4 at Apple stores quit other phones -informal poll

* But most customers for new iPhone are Apple upgrades

* Customers spoken to in Japan, Australia, Europe, U.S.

By Kate Holton and Poornima Gupta

LONDON/SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's latest iPhone looks set to become its bestselling device ever, and one reason appears to be disenchantment with rival smartphones.

Nearly one in four people who thronged Apple stores from Tokyo to San Francisco told Reuters on Friday they were ditching BlackBerries, discarding Nokias or even giving up Google Android-based phones, hoping for something better.

The majority of the 127 iPhone 4S buyers polled informally by Reuters in the United States, Japan, Australia, France, Germany and Britain were Apple diehards upgrading their devices.

But 28 claimed they were making a switch, with some saying they were disillusioned by Research in Motion after this week's global BlackBerry outage that enraged millions.

"I was with Nokia before, but I guess they've sort of lost their way in terms of the interface and everything. Plus, most of my friends use Apple," Myles Geissler, 25, said while shopping for an iPhone in Sydney.

Apple had already pre-sold over a million during the first day it went live on the Internet -- a week before it hit stores selves in seven countries on Friday.

RIM's BlackBerry and smartphones by manufacturers such as Nokia -- which abandoned Symbian and will this year unveil devices based on Microsoft software -- have been losing ground to the iPhone, which is facing a serious threat only from Android phones.

The new phone looks similar to the previous iPhone 4 but has a faster processor, better camera and a voice-activated software dubbed "Siri", which lets users ask the phone questions and helps in logging calendar items.

"I am going into fashion and it's like the official phone of the industry. Also, I am tired of the Blackberry issues, like stuff going down every six months," said fashion publicist Adam at the Times Square store.

RIM's share of the global smartphone market fell to 11.7 percent in the second quarter, from 13.0 percent in the first, according to Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney. Android's share rose to 43.4 percent from 36.4 percent, and Apple's rose to 18.2 percent from 16.9 percent.

Sprint reported record single days in the United States for any device -- by 1 p.m.

"We are seeing a nice mix of people who are first-time smartphone purchasers as well as those who are switching from competitors," said Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney.

Away from the notoriously fickle consumer-gadget marketplace, Apple also appears to be making strides.

Apple appears to be a winner when workers get to pick their own phones, in a trend known as the consumerization of IT. Companies can save money when they let employees buy their own phones and pay their own monthly bills.

An Aite Group poll of 402 wealth managers conducted before the outage found that 45 percent would choose an iPhone or iPad, compared with 14 percent for a BlackBerry.

"Siri is pretty amazing. With Android, you have to memorize commands. I don't understand why it can't be on all (Apple) phones," said James Thompson, who had braved the six-hour drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco just to get in line -- overnight -- with his brother.

Sprint, AT&T report record demand for iPhones

By Joan E. Solsman

AT&T Inc. and Sprint Nextel Corp. said demand for Apple Inc.'s iPhone was breaking records Friday.

Sprint customers got their first chance ever to buy the wildly popular smartphones and gave the company its best ever day of sales for a device family across retail, web and telesales channels.

Sprint Product Chief Fared Adib said demand for the device from both current and new customers surpassed the company's expectations. He attributed clamor to Sprint's pricing plan, which unlike those from AT&T and Verizon Wireless, allows unlimited data for new customers.

Separately, AT&T said it not only beat its previous record for iPhone activations on a single day but also was on track to double it. AT&T has been a carrier partner with Apple since the first iPhone was launched in 2007.

Verizon Wireless, the third U.S. carrier launching the iPhone 4S Friday, didn't plan to release details of its launch, according to spokeswoman Brenda Raney, other than to say that its stores have reported steady sales all day and expect a busy weekend. Verizon Wireless, which offered a previous version of the phone to its customers earlier this year for the first time, is a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. VZ +0.84% and Vodafone Group PLC (VOD.LN, VOD).

Sprint shares were up 0.7% at $2.81 after hours, while AT&T's closed up 0.2% at $29.17 and weren't active after hours.

BlackBerry, Android secondhand trade-ins spike at iPhone 4S launch

By Daniel Eran Dilger

Published: 05:03 PM EST (02:03 PM PST)
A popular site for selling second hand smartphones has reported an 80 percent increase in used BlackBerry phones and a 72 percent increase in Android trade-ins during the launch week of Apple's iPhone 4S.

According to a report by CNET, second hand gadget buyer Gazelle reported a huge influx of RIM BlackBerry trade-ins over the last week, coinciding with both the extended global outage of RIM's messaging service and the launch of iPhone 4S.

Gazelle's Anthony Scarsella said the spike in unwanted RIM devices is "easily the highest volume of BlackBerry trades ever seen, period," while noting that the 80 percent increase occured over already record highs earlier this month.

"In the grand scheme of BlackBerry growth over the past month, it can be pretty much entirely attributed to the launch of the iPhone 4S," he added.

Scarsella also noted a 72 percent increase in Android trade-ins over the same period, the majority of which have been tied to Sprint, which first began carrying Apple's iPhone line at the launch of the iPhone 4S. Sprint also now carries the $99 8GB CDMA iPhone 4.

CNET noted that Sprint has also recently announced newer Android models, including the Motorola Droid Razr and Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, and speculated that its "users may also be planning ahead" for those launches.

However, neither of those new phones are actually available yet, making it unlikely that Sprint's subscribers would trade in their existing Android phone while waiting for Sprint to announce when the new models might become available.

Sprint itself has reported new sales records set by its iPhone 4S launch, described the iPhone as being a top reason it was losing customers to AT&T and Verizon, and has invested a reported $20 billion in guaranteed sales of 30.5 million iPhones through 2014.

In addition to Android and RIM switchers, Gazelle has also noted trade-ins of 65,000 iPhones since it began buying second hand models, and noted that used iPhones have been traded in every 15 seconds to lock in buyback prices since the iPhone 4S was announced.

Two-Thirds of Google’s Mobile Search Traffic Comes From iOS Devices

http://9to5mac.com/2011/09/21/google-23rds-of-our-mobile-search-comes-from-apples-ios/

Google: "2/3rds of our mobile search comes from Apple's iOS"

Seth Weintraub, last month:

But as part of the testimony, Creighton said briefly (before she was cut off) that 2/3rds of mobile search comes from Apple iOS devices. That’s pretty interesting considering the share of Android devices in the market.

Keep this in mind, both regarding Siri as a threat to Google, and with the whole “Android is winning because there are more Android handsets than iPhones” thing.

By making Apple into an enemy, Google could wind up losing money with Android, long-term, compared to a hypothetical world where they’d kept Android as a BlackBerry-ish OS rather than an iPhone-ish one. iPhone users are the cream of the crop, demographically.

How hard is it to unlock a U.S. iPhone 4 in Thailand?

Is it worth it (hassle wise, baht wise) to bring one over and have unlocked, etc., or is it better to just buy one there?

Thanks DD or whomever knows the answer.

Hi Quim,

You're in luck, because since earlier this year, with the fall of the AT&T monopoly, you can now purchase a fully unlocked iPhone directly from Apple Stores.

Mind you, you need to specify that you want a "no contract" model, and you do not need to have it activated with any particular carrier The costs would be in the $750 range for the 32GB model (roughly the same price as the same model in Thailand).

The $200/$300 prices are via AT&T with a 2-year contract ($325 early termination fee), and those phones can not be reliably unlocked, and are not (IMO) worth the hassle of jail breaking and subsequent babysitting for a reliable unlock.

I would suggest, get the $750 iPhone 4 or iPhone 4GS, no-contract model, and don't look back.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
