...Not really easy to unlock - I think they only *just* now released a jailbreak for it, and updated the unlock hack, but it might not work on the newest phones...
So can this be done?

Not reliably, no.

Can you take your locked iPhone to MBK, leave it with some phone monkeys, and get it back with a Thai SIM? Sure.

It won't be a reliable phone after that, and you can forget about upgrading it - which, considering Apple just released iOS 5.1 with new features, is the biggest problem.

This is from a dyed in the wool Android posterboy:

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/perlow/im-sick-to-death-of-android/20242

Disappointed and sick of Android.

What I end up migrating to personally after my current contact is up I have no idea at this point, because it is some 20 months away. But I’m awfully tempted to put my Galaxy Nexus up for sale, bite the bullet, and pay full price for an iPhone 4S and a MiFi to handle my LTE 4G tethering needs when I travel. That’s just how frustrated I am at this point with the entire situation.

'Nuf said. Let's hope spark is happy with his Blackberry or Android box.

I've checked the iPhone 4S - in the anticipation of giving up Android and buying it - and it's still the finest phone on the market, even if you don't weigh in the ease of use and all those fantastic apps. The camera is absolutely one of the very finest mobile phone cameras with its new fast lens and better sensor. Superb IQ.

However, there might be one big problem, and that is the yellowish-greyish tint and lower contrast of the screen, compared to iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch - called Apple's "yellowgate" on the internet. If it doesn't go away this color bias will be a serious drawback of the iPhone 4S.

Horace Dediu on the just-completed quarter:

Apple captured 73% of phone industry profits and Samsung captured 26%. HTC took 1%. Everybody else lost money.

No further commentary needed.

iCloud

http://www.apple.com/icloud/

Set up an iCloud account (it's free and you get 5GB of storage), and activate 'iCloud Backup' on your iPhone. Whenever on WiFi, plugged into power, and locked, the iPhone will back itself up automatically.

This means that when you need to restore, you can restore *everything*, SMS messages, game high-scores, in-progress documents, etc. Your Contacts and Calendars are automatically backed up on iCloud anyway, regardless of iCloud backup being set.

Android has nothing comparable.

Yes, iTunes no longer needed - as long as you have a prior iCloud backup or account with that information (you can also set up iCloud on the web, and copy your contacts to iCloud via the web interface), iPhone will ask you for your iCloud credentials, and upon logging in asks you if you want to merge and sync all your data.

Done.

gMail contacts and calendar are synced automatically
gOOgle Drive contains all your online documents, in progress or otherwise.
SMSs can be backed up and restored with a free app
Game scores I've never worried about, don't game much (on a phone), almost never actually. My 3D LED at home is much better for gaming in Hi-Def.
Actually, if I were truly into gaming I'd get a Sony phone & then I could share games to/from the PS3.

The activation with iTunes was the only option given to our Sales staff as far as I know, that's not cool at all.

You have listed a separate app or application for each individual synching task. I have explained that iCloud is a single, comprehensive, central synch - it's basically like having iTunes in the Cloud, where it backs the *entire* phone up, and allows to restore an entire phone as well. Enter one set of credentials, and everything is restored.

You've listed at least 5 different items, and that doesn't even back up the camera phone images (also done by iCloud and synched across devices via PhotoStream as well), or your music, etc.

Yes, iCloud also does all your online documents - also, all via the single credentials. You miss the advantage of it being fully automated, and fully transparent.

Grab a current iPhone, take it out, and start it up - you can activate it without iTunes.
