2) No memory card slot, so you can't immediately download the pictures from your camera's SD card;

iPad Camera Connection Kit - a variation of the iPod Camera Connection Kit that's been around for over 6 years (updated, obviously), that allows connecting your digital camera and transferring pictures to iPad. This was one of my 'must have' features, albeit limited by 64GB, I'd run out of space soon. Either way, I'd use a MacBook to store, and organize, and my iPad to carry around a sub-set of pictures, and present.

3) No support for Adobe Flash, so sites like Hulu are not supported.
Flash is dead - get over it.

The world is moving to HTML5, and YouTube and Vimeo are already making the transition. By year's end, Adobe will be hard pressed claiming that 70% of the web uses Flash to present video. They would be lucky having 20% left.

I assume that it comes with iTunes, and that somehow you can use iTunes to load your own content (as opposed to having to buy everything from Apple). But, how do you get the content accessible to iTunes?

You drag it onto iTunes, or you use any of the multitude of video converters to convert your video to H.264 (if it isn't already in that format to begin with, in which case, you just drag it into iTunes).

4) No discussion that I saw as to whether the iPad can join a network and/or have access to a NAS device.

Right - the ability to have WiFi, and the multitude of apps providing that functionality already must have slipped by....

5) No report that I saw that listed the video/audio support. flac? wma? mkv? etc. And, for any codex support "missing", do you have to wait for Apple to supply it?
Apple supports standard codecs - MP3, MP4, H.264.

wma? Convert it.
mkv? You're funny.
flac? Cute

I don't believe esoteric or obsolete formats are being supported, but there are plenty of fast converters (at least on the Mac; on retarded platforms YMMV) to drop your file on, and find it in iTunes within 15-20 minutes.

Plus, more and more people are providing this sort of content in ready-ripped H.264 format.

The iPad, with regards to your questions, is no different than an iPhone or iPod Touch. I suspect 3.2 firmware will be released for iPhone/iPod Touch before April, and both iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad will receive the firmware 4.0 update around July.

Word is that the contact pad of the micro-SIM is identical so there is hope that regular SIMs can be shaved down to fit.
In other words, the guys at MBK will get quite busy after April, if they can secure microSIM.

What everyone seems to completely ignore, is that this will mean that July's iPhone 4.0 will also be sporting a microSIM, and will be taking major design cues from iPad (the aluminium back will make a return).

Yeah, looks doable.

That picture is a photoshop alteration, so we can't 100% rely on it - the departing image is one from a regular AT&T SIM.

Technical entries imply it is a different standard, but it's possible (read: hope) that the electrical connections are identical and that stamp cutters will be available soon.

The fact that the 3G versions of iPad are unlocked is the biggest news - which again harks of things to come on the iPhone front.

The biggest issue I have is the lack of multitasking. I'll buy one for a toy, but I'll have to use an iPod for some background music while reading an eBook. I would have expected the engineers to have this enabled in the OS.

As long as you use the iPod application for music, you can listen to music while reading an eBook. This works now on the iPhone that way.

Non-Apple apps cannot run in the background.

Not necessarily, the iPad micro-SIM may be a carrot added for the service providers. So customers with both an iPhone and an iPad can't share a single data plan between the devices by swapping the SIM. Make them buy 2 data plans.

With DTAC, you can request for a second Internet only SIM. So, this is perfect for the iPhone and iPad combination.

Like the PC does. The many PC's that I have cannot play a MP3 file with music while playing video at the same time without missing a beat on one or the other. I end up using two computers.

A genuine non techie:

Very pleased with:

- my 3G Kindle, download of huge library within 30 - 60 seconds wherever I am.

- My Apple 32 GSM phone. Love it. Love the app store, music video downloads and app to download Youtube videos.

- My Panthip made PC, my SONY laptop VGN - FW56GF

What am I missing? All purchased in Bangkok except Kindle.

Skippy, what am I missing out on? Is life really passing me by? I still read actual magazines and newspapers, I like the "feel" of it. You should understand that. Hope you are well.

The one function that the iPad cannot replace in mags or newspaper is a immediate tool for killing cockroaches here in Thailand.

Connectivity through a Interface not directly means you have to carry another piece of hardware with you, plus many Airlines will not let you use a Blue Tooth Mouse let alone a keyboard. Plus Blue Tooth is another drain on the Battery, simple carry a spare, ops you cannot swap Batteries! I said it is not a Netbook Killer but the concept is good if more limited than Apple pretends!
