i decided I was tired of using my nokia 6670 when I had my USA iPhone. I went to mbk last week and confirmed it could not be unlocked; but they had a thin circuit strip that they could insert behind the SIMM card and fake out the iPhone.
my new 12 call simm card wouldn't work because the area of the simm card that connected to the circuit strip was too small. they installed a TH-GSM simm card and tried every circuit strip they had. none worked - couldn't get the network. this took a very long 2 hours!
they told me they were expecting a new shipment of circuit strips & to return next week. I took the bts to mbk and spent another hour this afternoon.
it worked! my iPhone can trade calls, & text messages with my nokia and can access the wifi in my condo. since that is all I use it for, I will quit messing with it while I am ahead.
if this conversion stays operational - ????? - I might not have to buy a LG - KM 900 Arena - paang maak!

UPDATE: I just noticed that the new sim card was a 12 call freedom sim, but it had a larger pin surface to go along with the large face on the circuit strip.
TH-GSM is the network.
the package of the new sim card is white with a creature wearing a crown on the front. the normal 12 call package is green and has a teenage boy on the front...

the first negative has shown up. the iphone battery consumption has risen dramatically. I have to recharge it twice a day. I haven't noticed any over-heating problems yet, but that is sure to come next.
unless I can find a very long recharging cable, this might be another fix ahead of its time.....................................

This isn't a surprise with the SIM proxy card hacks.
Better off just jailbreaking your iPhone, and installing the unlock hack.
I'll be in town in about 48 hours, so can help you unlock it, if you want to give it a shot.

I need help:
I have given up trying to unlock my USA iPhone. I have tried both S/W & H/W methods either don't work, or don't last more than 8 hours.
1. Where can I purchased an unlocked iPhone in Bangkok that will support all brands of Sim cards including Thailand 12 Call and AT&T? I tried True and another iPhone dealer at Central World Plaza and they both informed me they do not sell unlocked iPhones.
2. The battery in my USA is on its last legs and requires charging every 4 hours. Where can I have the battery replaced by an authorized dealer?
I am reticent to try MBK as there are too many booths that can "Do whatever you ask them to do" - often with questionable results.
I found I can call the USA using 12 Call for 4 baht/minute. The best I could do with AT&T is $1.25/minute after paying $5.25/month for their international package.

well mbk is the best imho
theres 2 places I use the most, as u come up the escalator there is one straight in front, quite a big professional looking stand
and the other one I use is in the second part if u turn left head straight down, the smaller kiosks
i bought an iphone there from a guy who was really really helpful and interesting, he explained so many silly things to try and "educate" me, even making me inspect the plastic wrap on the box to see which was usa and which was hk versions, opening in front, wrote down imei number before unlocking it so I could check same one later etc etc, installed it all, unlocked it all, gave me his card etc, I even went back a week later without it to ask him why bluetooth didnt work, he said amongst the hundreds of games and applications there was a bluetooth icon logo and to just click that rather than "manually" going into phone settings etc etc
so all in all I was very pleased
i got to say really mbk is the best for me, whether I got lucky or u were unlucky I dont know, but those 2 have always been great for me

Wasn't too impressed by RIM's initial efforts to impress. I doubt they will improve. By what you are describing, it sure doesn't look it.
