NightFall
ever since I spent a few months in india, and a couple of trips to BKK, I live with this feeling that here in Seattle, USA, i'm just not "home" anymore. been here more than 30 years too, and I still like the area, and my dad and siblings here, but...

we know there are many "wannabee's" and "wish-i-coulds", and I wonder if I am among them, or am I among those that _actually_ doit? my last trip in november I kept running across guys in thailand who HAD made the leap - a tattoo artist, an ecommerce website guy, a retired construction guy, a guy who sold his house and everything and had been hanging out for 7 months, another guy who bought some sewing machines and started a small sports gear shop for export, a guy teaching english...

a number of guys who have done it say they got burnt out after a while, and of course, life is still life, wether you are in rainy seattle or tropical phuket. but i'm thinking i'd sure like to take the time *too* get burnt out.

i'm 52 yrs old. sure aren't any 25 yr olds falling for me here! I have no 401k, no retirement, don't own a house, not much prospect for me here. if that's the way it's going to be, i'd much rather live where there are palm trees, tropical skys, beautiful girls, beaches, and where the nut I got from selling off all my "stuff" would last years, not months... we'll see...

Whisper
Nightfall,
My advice to you is that unless you are at the end of your tether then stay in Seattle, work your ass off, save all your money and come to Thailand for a holiday as many times a year as you can. Unless you can get transferred to work here for a Western company or if you know plenty of Thai people to help you set up a business here you would find it very difficult and extremely frustrating to live here. Also, the money you earn here would not permit you to lead the hedonistic lifestyle to which you are no doubt accustomed.
Just my opinion and I will no doubt be shot down as a result.
Good luck.
Whisper.

Edge
Good advice Whisper.
There are many different types of guys living here but the most content (long time) seem to be the ones with a career, not just a job, a career.
I have several friends in engineering, education, hotels and business. They have normal jobs and a hell of a social life. Yep, a few friends are retired here and a few hanging around with a bit pot of gold from farangland.
Want to make it difficult for yourself? Come to Thailand to look for a job, as opposed to a career, finish up doing English teaching or import export stuff and still try to have enough money to party like you were still a tourist!

NightFall,

Don't listen to other guys telling you to stay home!!

DO IT.

You can come to LOS and earn a decent living teaching english. You will make around 30 to 40K per month. Check out http://www.ajarn.com for up to date info.

What do you have to lose? Nothing. DO IT.

Whisper
Contrary to what BigDUSA says about coming to Thailand and teaching English, it is not as easy as falling off a log.
The Thai Ministry of Education now insists on farang "teachers" having a university degree (Bachelor) before they can teach in Government schools. Sure, you can pay the course fee and become qualified to teach English but then you have to actually find a job. There are plenty of schools asking for teachers but they are out in the sticks where you would be the only farang in town.
Many farang teachers come here with no idea about how to act with Thai students or even Thai people - they dress like they are on holiday, do stuff-all preparation and fail dismally as a teacher. They think teaching English is an end to a means, not a viable career and expect to rock and roll all night and party every day. You would also be lucky to earn 25,000 baht per month, too.
I'm sure BigDUSA will contradict me.

I agree 100% with Whisper. If I had to come here and teach English my first trip would be to Changmai to jump off the highest mountain.

Running a successful business here is much tougher than back in the States, of course it can be done, but you find yourself working long and hard hours with little time to enjoy the nightlife close at hand.

IMHO unless you are working for a large company willing to give you a good expat package, I would stay in the states make the cash and travel to Thailand as much as you can afford.

If you have enough in the bank to retire, this is a good place to retire.

Those are my two suggested modes to come here to live. The number of foreign people running successful businesses here is definitely the minority.

Now the bigger question here is; With all these so called "English" teachers here, why is there so much bad English translations on signs, brochures, etc....?
and I am not talking about Mom and Pop businesses, but large companies as well. Inquiring minds would like to know.

I heard the just passed the 38 hour week in france.

I agree with thaidup for a change. I am too working my ass off. 10 am til 10 pm. 6 sometimes 7 days a week.

of course I can go and play earlier, if I want. but sometimes workload just doesn't permit this.

most of our customers in the US start to get active by 8 pm thailand time, mostly they expect some answers or actions in their morning, to work on during their working day, thus the 10 pm sometimes even later.

of course you can teach for a couple of hours a day. but 25'000 baht?? this would sure be enough for a weekend. but how about the rest of the month??

You're funny - mentioning 'decent living' and '30-40,000k Baht' in the same sentence.

The way I see it - I prefer to live in the US, and visit LOS, as it allows me to keep enjoying LOS, without it become a chore to have to live there (meaning that all the issues of 'living there' become the same after a while - with the added bonus of never really fitting in).

I prefer my pleasure in small doses, as that way it remains a pleasure.
