If ever there was a damning indictment of the Australian education system, it's that it managed to produce Dirty Guru.

Actually, seriously, I dont think it's that hard to make a decent living here. There are plenty of gaps in the marketplace for innovative little businesses.

What's the market like foruniversity instructors? Ph.D. etc?

I am currently settled in Taiwan and things are great, so no complaints. EXCEPT.....no scene like the one in Thailand. It's bloody near impossible to go to the establishments there without being blackmailed or seen by someone you know and then paraded on national tv news just because you are a foreigner (the fact that most locals pay for play, and even openly ask for theaddress to the nearest brothel when in Europe, seems to be beside the point).

There are a few other setbacks here, but, overall I am quite happy with the place, but it still does not compare to my Thailand. So, if I could get the same amount of money (and Taiwan is incredible in that regard----you'd think we were talking about other business-orientated occupations!), and lifetime job security in LOS, I'd get on the plane in seconds.

Ahhh.. the typical "educator-with-flawed-character-looking-for-job-in-LOS' situation.

Best to wait a while for the hype on Karr's case to die down, authorities claim to be looking into the matter of hiring poorly qualified educators because the genuine ones costs too much.

Besides, LOS has quite a fair no. of phoney farang educators already.

What is that case about?

Here in Taiwan there is, or at least there used to be, the problem of fake Ph.Ds, mostly among local but occasionally also among foreign instructors.

The Karr case being referred to is John Karr – recently arresting in Thailand and shipped back to the US in relation to the JonBenet Ramsey case (killing of a little girl several years ago in the US - 1996). Several reports have Mr. Karr in Thailand looking for a teaching job. This has people all in a tizzy over here (Thailand) about what requirements should be in place for English teachers in Thailand.

zorba,

If you have post graduate credentials then try assumption college or chula.

I have many mates there with ME's and PGCE's that make at or above 100,000baht a month (which is a nice living there)

I sold a condo to the director, an aussie, of the english program at assumption and can put you in contact with him.

Thanks atl. I would really like to look into it. I am not ready as yet to make any move, but I might be in the future. So, I'm just getting information for now. I am afraid that if I contact anyone, they might feel I am wasting their time sionce I have no immediate plans to move there.

Here in Taiwan I am an assistant professor, making quite good money, a bit more than the price range you mentioned, although that salary range sounds good enough to me. I love Taiwan and I am very happy here but I would be three times happier in Thailand.

The thing about Taiwan is that no matter how crap the economy gets, the higher education sector is extremely secure, especially for foreign (and, though not my fault, I am ashamed to admit, especially white) holders of Ph.Ds. And if I had no responsibilities to occupy my free time, I could be making a lot more through additional tutoring etc, legally tax free. It's this sort of security that makes me hesitant to move, unless I cvould find the same situation in Thailand.

I guess things are cheaper in LOS than in Taipei, and of course, let's not forget that my favorite excursion centers would be extremely close in proximity.

Would you happen to know of any websites in connection with the institutions you mentioned? I'll get on yahoo search as well to see.

Many thanks friend. I am really doubting that I could be so lucky, but I am hoping I could move to LOS and live there in constant bliss.

BTW, what happens in LOS when a foreigner, especially of a prestigious occupation (as it is regarded here in Taiwan) gets caught in the act? Are people stoic about it? Here in Taiwan the media will have a field day. The foreigner in question would become more famous/notorious than paris hilton, despite the fact that many locals frequent p4p places or have mistresses etc.

Does that mean you quit your job a few years ago, moved to BKK, and then moved away again? If so, what happened?

I'm also dreaming of moving to BKK, unfortunately, I've got two dreams that conflict with each other:

Dream 1:
Work like a dog for the next 7 years until I qualify for a retirement visa. The big plus of this plan is financial security, I should be able to acquire a substantial nest egg to fund a very confortable retirement by that time. The minus is, it's sort of like being in a 7 year coma, with no guarantee of waking up - and the retirement visa law may change.

Dream 2:
I'm currently in a position where I have no obligations tying me to farangland - and the nature of my profession allows me to work from a laptop - so in theory, I could move to BKK right now, at least as long as multiple tourist visa entries would allow - and travel to other countries in the between times - the "permanent traveller" lifestyle.

There's only a couple things stopping me from taking immediate action on dream 2. It's very hard to predict what kind of income I would be able to maintain from my farangland based clients - I figure I could do okay on as little as 30% at least for the short term, but in the long term, I can't help but wonder if I'd get to 50 and wish I'd amassed a pile of dough in farangland first, or get to 60 and wonder when I'll be able to stop working?

It's also possible that I may retain and even grow my client list being based in LOS, perhaps to the point of starting a Thai company that would then justify a work permit for myself, but of course there is no guarantee.

Any thoughts on this conundrum from those that have been there done that? Any permanent travellers? Any that have made the move and regretted it?
