afm171,

Why not do Dream 1.5, start off by spending a few months a year in LOS working from your laptop whilst still retaing significant contact with your farangland based clients by spending more than half the year in farangland.

jack attack
wait for the current smoke to clear with all the visa changes or potential changes or non changes.

The retirement deal looks like it will be problematic for the time being. Setting up companies with nominees is a nono for now.

The entire situation reeks of "falang go home" but I am sure it will settle down after the elections.

JA,

That is what SGGirl and I are doing.

We have a Social Entrepreneurship project in mind but will wait before there is a little more stability before pitching it.

Seems that SGGirl has taken a shine to Chang Mai and would not mind settling there for a while...

Is that what they call upscale sponsorship these days?

I hear all you guys talk about about it...but balls up and do it if you are serious...I mean you only live once if I aint wrong..

I was 30 years old and had a nightclub *edit in* just about past its hayday and a restaurant that was breaking even on a good month..

I said f*** it and sold the restaurant (broke barely even) and had scrapes coming in from my nightclub (about $700US a month..) though it was 44 baht to the dollar backin early '02..we eventually sold it in '03..so that $$ stopped which hurt a bit..

regardles, I said "do it" and did it and spent 1 year teaching, 1.5 years selling condo's, and about 6 months selling wine on Puket (until the tsunami)

I would advise getting a strong angle on what you want to do in Thailand, I had a very strong marketing/sales background, and it lent well to me getting a job close to 100K baht a month.

but bottom line, you can talk about and dream about it all you want but it takes the balls to just say f*** it and do it..but unfortunatly the new government seems to be shunning us away, so it might not be the best time..

you have this desire after holiday, but living in LOS is a whole different story..just be preped for it...and best of luck..

If its in your dreams just f***ing do it, and dont rely on anyone here helping you out, its on you, JUST DO IT, I sincerely mean that..

my 2 cents..

PS..I did bring a great lady back with me

Yeah, I hear you... sooner or later, it's gotta be: 'balls up.'

Just trying to decide whether "sooner" or "later" is the best choice - the only help I seek is to learn from other's experience.

When you write: "PS..I did bring a great lady back with me"

Does that mean you're no longer in Thailand? If so, why is that?

haam sup
First, living in the US, I said, "Take this job and shove it!", and moved to Thailand.

Found a job, moved to Nong Khai, repeated the above, and found a new job in Bangkok.

Repeated the above, found a new job (for TRIPLE the money), and my new boss said, "take this work contract and SHOVE IT!".

So I only lack a flight and a job in the US to be back at square one, two years later...

I think it was LY who was at his wits end over being unemployed here; he seems to have found something. I am now in a quandry: should I stay, or should I go?

My background: electronic engineer, embedded systems hardware/firmware.

Any ideas?

afm,

yes..me and mrs atl are back in the states...

I went over not really knowing how long I would stay and after 3 years realized I wouldnt ever make enough money working for thai/chinese companies to raise a family, send my kids to college in america (university of georgia to be exact lol)..save and invest money, travel to europe or america...etc

I didnt want to spend my prime money earning years making the baht I was making...I lived fine as far as bills, rent, food, fun but long term was pretty bleak...

we plan to retire over there once my nest egg here gets nice and full ...and the regime in charge is more welcoming...

I will add to everyone thinking about it...I do not regret one day and would say it was a life changing 3 years I spent with memories and friendships that will go to the grave with me...

cheers,
atl

Thanks for those viewpoints guys,

Haam,
I don't know much about your profession, but is it possible that you could create some kind of firmware update for a popular device (ie. iPod) that you could then sell over the net? Or is it possible that you could outsource yourself -- set up an "offshore company" that then contracts work out from the US? Just make a website describing your services (not mentioning that you are only one guy) and start contacting potential clients. I am working on something similar for myself now.

If you're looking for a stateside job, you might want to check out one of my clients: http://www.cypress.com/ They're really big into Programmable Systems on a Chip, sounds like it might be right up your alley.

atl,
Thanks for the story. The dilemma you faced over long term finances is exactly what is holding me back now. There's no way I'm going to depend on a Thai company, so I guess it's up to me to create an acceptable cash-flow through other means - I've got few things on the go, so it's going to be "head down" for a little longer...

HS,

You'll find that with your background, you can get decent contract work in the States, especially in avionics at the moment (via Aerotek, etc). That should give you some flexibility with you schedule to jet back to LOS for a sanity check once in a while. Much of the software (which is my background) has been sent to India and China, and more and more, it seems you won't get a job in China (and Singapore) in my area unless you speak Mandarin too.

I did the same thing you did, spent a couple of years on the ground in LOS living with my TGF (hardship posting, lol), but I didn't see anything there that looked bankable to me for the long run, where I could ensure some semblance of comfort for retirement. The job market in the USA certainly isn't what it used to be, as execs seem to answer only to short term shareholder interests, and the talent base here erodes or is pushed aside for profits overseas. (I know several highly skilled ex-Silicon Valley types who aren't working in hi-tech anymore.) Still, it's a somewhat safe harbor at the moment from which to launch the next longterm foray into LOS.

- Balls
