Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 21 August 2007 :-

English tutors failing the test - Just one in 10 can score more than 60%
=====================================================

Training is needed urgently to improve the standard of English teaching in Thailand, senior government and private educationalists said after seeing the "highly unimpressive scores" in a recent test of English-language teachers.

Of the 14,189 teachers in 30 tourism-oriented provinces who took the test, 74.59% scored less than 41 marks out of a possible 100, according to an Office of Basic Education Commission (OBEC) report.

Only 9.94% of the teachers scored between 60 and 100 marks, while 15.47% managed to score between 42 and 60 marks.

The lowest score earned in the test - which allotted 30 marks for listening ability, 30 marks for reading, 20 marks for writing and 20 marks for speaking - was two.

Among the 30 provinces from where the teachers who took the test came were Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and Chon Buri.

The test was conducted jointly by OBEC and Ramkhamhaeng University as a follow-up to a previous one conducted four years ago in which 90 per cent of English-language teachers also did poorly.

The OBEC report described English teaching in Thailand currently as a "failure", and cited the lack of direct education in teaching English for local teachers as the main reason.

Asst Prof Chaleosri Phiboolchol, chairperson of the English-language Teachers' Association of Thailand, said most of the approximately 500,000 English teachers in government and private schools at primary and secondary level "were made to do their jobs" without basic qualifications or proper training.

She suggested giving scholarships and providing training and rewarding outstanding teachers as solutions to encourage self-development among English teachers.

Assoc Prof Suchada Nimmannit, a lecturer with Chulalongkorn University's Language Institute, said the Education Ministry had failed to substantially improve English teachers.

"Training every few years for teachers is not enough to develop them academically," she added.

She said that if sending Thai English-language teachers to countries with native English speakers and highly professional training was too expensive, exchange programmes among Southeast Asian countries would be good enough to expose them to new experiences and prompt them to adjust to all-English environments.

Akkhara Akkharanithi, a lecturer at the Language Institute, said the teaching of English should also be improved at kindergarten level, where all the teachers are too burdened with full-time tasks to improve their English teaching.

She suggested that all government English teachers who worked for more than five years should be allowed to study English overseas on their own funds, while more scholarships should be made available to those who proved to be outstanding English teachers.

TU,

for the most part you are spot on...but before I worked in the thai biz sector I did actually teach at assumption college over off Silom for a year...

I was a a well shaved/well dressed perverted slove..and I will add druken at many times ..but in fact many of the women thai teachers used to ask about my status on a regular basis and I am not dreaming....I hooked up with one 6th grade teacher that was a randy little thing...

Of all my buddies most were as you say but a few of them actually were very sincere about their job and wanted to make it a career...the schools are lucky to have those rare breeds..

and I will add if you really want to be a teacher take it seriously dont just do it to pay for your extra activities...some of these kids parents pay alot of money and should be given the correct amount of attention...I had alot of success in teaching geography which they didnt get alot of and they seemed to really enjoy...

I am asking this for a friend (really)....

He is thinking of teaching in Thailand and the salary is 35,000 a month.

I have only been to Thailand on holiday....can you still have an ok standard of living with this salary bearing in mind he isnt expecting to live the high life or live in a Suk Condo?

I know all this is relative but relative to a young person not expecting luxury what do you think?

Thanks.

LocalYokul

$1,000 a month (roughly)

this person will have to be really frugal to live on that income

that's the same thing they were paying over 10 years ago BTW

first thing to do is get used to eating the local food & don't expect to be eating Western food often

assuming this job is in BKK. If it were upcountry it would be easier to save some money, considering BKK costs more than most of the upcountry cities to rent/live

and if this person wants to keep that job & not go looking for a new one that pays HALF I suggest he stay away from having romantic relationships with his co-workers

even normal friendly relationships with Thai people can turn sour very quickyl & they usually take the Thai vs. Foreigner approach when it does
and being in Thailand only makes that worse for you

OK, thanks.

The job is in BKK and this seems to be the salary. I guess other teachers survive on this.

Leaving the relationships thing aside (dunno what will happen there) I guess I mean that the average Thai salary is very low - granted a lot of people live with family I guess. This suggested to me that the salary was liveable on..but I am not qualified to judge....

He is asking me for advice but I have never lived in Thailand so don't know....do you think I should advise him against taking this job?

I look at I tthis way.... In the States, if you can't make 10k a month, you should go back to school and learn. I accept that most people can make 10k a month in the U.S. in most areas if you have a degree. Given that, is living in basic poverty in bkk on $1,000 a month really worth it? to be able to shag giels? Hell, on 10k a month, you could live a decent live and still have decent escorts in the U.S. on a fairly constant basis. Why live in poverty looking at all the tourists eating decent food while you eat off food carts? Sorry, but I hold myself to higher standars than that. Maybe it's ok for some people to live like that, but isn't the goal of the whole thing to be able to afford to do anything you want anytime you want? There are many of us here that travel to LOS 6-8 times a year for several weeks at a time, stay in very nice places and live very well. Put in the time to build your assets so you can do the same, then live off the fruits of your labor.

There is nothing worse than hanging out with a local that can't afford to even hang out with you for a day because of their local salary.

Humbert,

BK gives a great starting point with ajarn.com

I am out of the loop but assuming he has a uni degree he should be able to make more in BKK, as is pointed out 35K a month is essentially the same salary that was being offered many years ago.

I taught for stint and without my savings (in the bank when I moved) would not have really lived a tolerable lifestyle....i.e food/wine shopping at Villa Market, farang restaurants on a semi-regular basis and long weekend trips to the islands etc...

A buddy that I taught with lived pretty well on 40K a month but, aside from being a cheap charlie in general, he didnt drink..that alone saved him a ton of baht....and he was very satisfied with cart food 9 out of 10 meals...

dont get me wrong, I like the cart food but wouldnt want it to be a necessity......

it was when my savings began to run out and I started to enter my peak earning age bracket that I gave myself an ultimatum to find a job that was more suitable (income and career wise) in Thailand or go home.....

if your friend is younger and it is not affecting his peak earning age in his native country or industry...I say f*** it go ahead and do it...it's a fun experience and he will make some great memories.....and who knows he could even meet and bring back a pretty little souvenir

afterall, you only live once!!!!!

just go with the mindset to budget and live on his salary (apartment, entertainment, food, bills) and preferably have a few thousand "farang money" in the bank for extra's.....forget about saving any money from the get go....
