My passport is stamped admitted until 30 NOV 2009. Can I leave Thailand on December 1, 2009? Or do I have to leave Thailand on or before November 30, 2009?

You have to leave on November 30 before midnight.

You can leave on December 1, 2009. But you will be on overstay.. which shouldn't be a problem because 1 day overstay used to be free.

And if it isn't anymore, it will cost you 500 baht.

In both cases you'll receive an overstay stamp in your passport.

Couldn't he technically go to immigration and get an extension, to carry him over, and avoid the overstay stamp?

Sure, but that's a lot of hassle if you're planning to overstay for a short period.

You have to go to Chaeng Wattana and they will charge you 1,900 baht for an extension.

A stamp in your passport doesn't hurt (I have around 10 of them) and the chance they will arrest you is minimal if it's only 1 day.

Yes you can. I have done that a couple of times, no problem at all.

Actually, you can leave any day in 2009 or 2010 or....

But after November 30, you're on overstay.

And if I am not mistaken, that one day's grace period is only allowed at the airport.

That's correct.... only at the airport is there a grace day... but only regarding the overstay fee. You will get a stamp in your passport.

At the border there is no grace day.. you get fined right away if you're only a day on overstay.

Furthermore, a visa exempt is 30 days at the airport, but only 15 days at the border.

Late flight from NRT arrives either just before or just after midnight. Last time I came in, entry was marked as the previous day even though it was after midnight.

Do the immigration officers change the date on the stamp whenever they get around to it?

Would be nice to get an extra day when stamped after midnight.

The criteria on which the date is based is when the airplane arrives or leaves.

So, if your plane leaves at 2am, but you pass immigration before midnight (on the day your visa expires), you're still on overstay.

I guess, it's for arriving planes the same.
