Yes, the rent is 8,000 baht for a single room and doesn't include electricity and water.

If you use an electric cooker, you are allowed to on the balcony. But no gas.

Hi
And what about Internet ?

They have Internet free of charge for short term rentals and a fee (unknown) for long term rentals.

I have installed my own True Internet (which is not a problem because they have a wired network throughout the building) and they connect it to your room telephone line.

Also Truevisions is not a problem to install, as they have a large True dish on the roof and the wire is redirected to your room (so no separate dishes and wires through your room).

LY,

of those 3 suggested sites:

http://www.thaiapartment.com

seems pretty solid and includes some good ones in the 9,000 to 12,000 baht a month range, away from Sukhumvit/Silom but still good options!

My friend has basic knowledge of Thailand and is a lot like me when I moved over there, but he insists he will not stay for 3 years likes I ended up doing

He is very early 30's, single, not working and is basically looking to stretch 10K US as far as it will go and he doesnt care to live in the middle of the "action." He would like to take a few long weekend trips on a decent budget, and I advised him to plan on making at least one of those trips a visa run.

I suggested he plan on $500 a month for apartment (all in) and $1,500 spending money (47,000 baht) a month plus credit card for some things an he could stretch that for a good 4 maybe 5 months, easy.

He is a casual drinker and I suppose will get into P4P on occasion, but I get the feeling he just wants a cool experience for a few months!

Cheers,
atl

To get the most for his money then he should avoid hookers, and start now building up a list from Thaifriendly.com Lots of girls on there looking for a boyfrend in his age group.

It is the current top site to look for non-p4p girls. In his age group they like to have fun, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to take them out.

If he travels on the trains, and buses he can see a lot. His biggest expense will be rooms at the places he travels to.

My friend, in his age group, loved Koh Chang island, and with rooms at bt350 a night (Lonely Beach), motorbike rental at bt150 a day, cheap beer, music, lots of backpacker women from Europe, and the Russian states, he was in heaven.

He could realistically make it 6 months, and have money left over. Make sure he gets 3 tourist visas before he leaves to come over here. That can cover him for almost 9 months with extensions. He can't do that once he is over here, he can only get 2, and not from every Thai embassy.

This is pretty important if he wants to save money, as crossing the border overland without a visa will give him only 15 days, and getting a tourist visa at any Thai embassy will take him at the minimum 2 days he won't have planned on, and the extra cost of room, and board.

Getting the 3 tourist visas he can get in the States will give him 2 border crossings plus his initial entry. If he works it right he could get almost 11 months use out of them taking advantage of how long the visa he gets for the other countries last. Thailand is the most expensive compared to the surrounding countries to live in, and visit.

Another problem will be his plane ticket. If he shops around, and checks the fine print, he will find a few of the airlines allow ticket date changes for an extra $125, as long as the change is made before the return date. These changes can be for as long as one year after the original return date.

He can cancel the return date, and the ticket will still be good for him to set a new return date for 1 year at a cost of $125. He does not have to set the new return date when he cancels the original date. Korea Air allows this, as does a few others.

Just some things to keep in mind if he wants to get the most amount of time here he can out of his money budget without having to decide when he originally buys his ticket.

I think It's a good plan, not so expensive for the quality. My wife (thai) have a small town house in front of Lumpini, in a soi near Police station, but we have to spend to make it comfortable.
