I had never been in Thailand during Songkran. Koolbreez suggested that we "celebrate" it in Soi Cowboy. So, at about 1pm off we went.
We decided to make Afterskool our base, both because it is pretty much in the middle of the soi and because we know a lot of the girls there. I think it was a pretty good choice.
We also opted for small buckets (about 20bt each) instead of the various squirt/water guns available. Another very smart choice. (You can fill up the buckets much faster and you can dump a lot more water on someone.)
Cowboy was pretty civilized, as opposed to other places that I have been told about. Each bar had at least one big water barrel that was constantly filled by water hoses (except when the pumps ran dry - then we had to wait or go to a bar next door and use their barrel. They never had any problems sharing.
I funded getting bags of ice for the barrels. You should see the expression on someone's face when they are hit with a bucket of ICE water. Price per bag was outrageous - 40bt, but the ice trucks were selling out as fast as they could deliver. Numerous times falangs (both sexes) would strut down the soi with their large water guns. They quickly learned that their guns were no match for buckets of ice water and few waited around for a second drenching.
Everyone and everything was completely drenched. Powder was also being used, but people were pretty civilized about it. If someone got it in the face others would help them clean it off. Many times I offered my full bucket of water to a girl who basically couldn't see through all the powder and helped them clean it off.
Speaking of girls, there were a LOT of really, really hot ones - especially around us and Afterskool. I don't know if they are of legal bar girl age, but they were very cute. And, one 9 year old took particular delight in drenching me. There were also a couple of very small boys (probably 3-4 years old and most likely kids of one or more of the girls) not quite understanding the concept but having fun none the less.
We lasted until about 5pm, when we retired to inside Afterskool. Drinks and food until about 6pm, when the party slowly started dying down so the girls could go to work.
Completely soaked, I dragged myself back to our hotel for a hot shower. Day 1 of Songkran, for me, was complete.
