I knew Miles Copeland the Elder in the 80s. Rather well actually. I was in Washington 81-89 and Miles was London based but visited frequently. We often were at the same (annual "Strategy") conferences, usually as faculty. Miles made a striking presence with that shock of white hair and Alabama accent muted but not entirely overcome by half a century as a field man.
Those conferences were organized by Defense&Foreign Affairs publisher Greg Copley (Perth Corporation), I was his infantry weapons contributing editor, and Miles was his longtime friend.
Didn't see him once I relocated here, and he died in the late 90s I believe. His son Sherman is with The Police and son Miles Jr is Sting's agent/manager. Miles Sr was a lifelong jazz clarinetist and knew most of the big names in that genre.
His "The Game of Nations" is a classic.
As to your other logic...merde. But you got the Agee/Welch thing backwards. Agee's poison pen (e.g. hsi book) is what got Dick killed senselessly in Athens (where he was COS). He (Welch) was a charming fellow and -- like me -- blind in one eye. Passed the eye exam when he entered the Agency by memorizing the eye chart. His best friends were Bill Colby and David Atlee Phillips.

Yes I think I read Miles book a while back. Well I definitely read one of them. It was quite good if I remember. I don't think 'Police' exist as such now and
I thought his son the drummer was called Stewart.
I have him on video explaining Samba and Reggae and
very articulate he is ! I would like to meet him one day
to discuss both subjects.
I bet you know a very old friend of mine who is one of the World's leading cryptographers. I am always meeting someone who knows him or has heard of him.
He looks a bit like General Custer. We used to have great conversations about Sc-fi and spying over a beer.
I think the NSA has used him as a consultant. A free spirit which I really appreciate. I don't like to follow any political side or dogma as I think it interupts clear thinking.(If one can say I think clearly with my Byzantyne Humour)
I remember reading that Miles Snr tried to photograph the Dead Sea Scrolls on top of the American Embassy someplace. Some blew away AAAAAaaaaaagggghhhh !
