Sorry to come across so harshly. I had a bad weekend, and am tired of people taking pot shots at Thailand.
The place is dirty yes, but no worse than any of the places in the states that I have been to.
Yes we worry about hygein. But it's kind of like a Nascar driver worrying about crashing and burning. When you reach that point, it's time to quit and find something else to do.
Also yes to me being a newbie. A newbie to this forum. I have been in Thailand for 2 years strait. No trips home. So I think that qualifies me as a Veteran when it comes to Thailand.
I apologise for the earlier post and comments. In the future I will use more discretion and taste.

Hi Kryptonite,
Yeah it was kinda harsh, and surprised me. ÝSurprised Humblestudent even more, I guess, since he's decided to deprive us of his wisdom.
I have a lot of time on my hands tonight, so I took his criticism to heart: I went back and read his posts!
Aside from having a 'shy bladder', chronic back pain, and smoking cigars, the only reason I could discern for his need to 'play it safe' is the fact that he has a 'tall dark Philippina' back home, to whom he presumably doesn't want to have to explain his 'new gift'.
What struck me most, though, about his posts is the preponderance of questions, vs. information in them. ÝAnd, except when he didn't get the answer he was looking for, there usually was no followup, or acknowledgement to the folks who patiently answered his 'where can I find PMs with extras?' type questions.
A couple of posters pointed out his incessant quest for detailed answers to obvious questions, and were met with snotty answers. ÝOthers, who I applaud, questioned whether Thailand REALLY needs farangs accosting students for sex, as a number of his questions indicated his interest in doing just that.
Far and away, most of his posts dealt with how to avoid spending money, is there free food at Thai happy hours, "I just walked out" (when asked for a tip for the HJ he wanted), etc.
We haven't heard the last from HS, I'm sure.
So, on reflection, your post was pretty spot on. ÝBut beneath our dignity to utter such things...

I personally feel that TTPump is exageratting a bit... but his little threads are funny. I have spent a lot of time in SoL and I have found it like other posters have put it. A bit seedy... but a cheap f-u-c-k for 700 baht.
Of course I could be wrong... and my hygiene is still going good!!!

Haam sup I appreciate your candor, and I appologize. I didn't get the sense that you were trying to "lighten things up."
I will also acknowledge the fact that when I first came to this board the I asked many newbie questions out of sheer excitement that probaby could have been researched more by me... An honest mistake...
But as far as the "there usually was no followup" and "how to avoid spending money" I am not sure I follow. I have always made a concerted effort to thank the elders that give so freely of their knowledge here.
Haam sup I do recall ONE post that revolved around happy hour food, but fail to see how that makes me focused on tring to save money. When I travel I live well, eat well, and tip well... Nope, never been called a cheap charely I don't think!
So haam and kryptonite, if buttons got pushed, that was not my intention...
I guess I got my buttons pushed too...
Yes I had a great time on my first trip, and yes I am very much still a newbie...

I must admit I really enjoyed going through all your posts on SoL and TTPump's urgings to return to the original topic. HaamSup,Kryptonite, I liked your steaming off and cooling off; Humblestudent, my applause for your final sign-off with "peace". So you are staying, right ? I bet you will. Once you turn into a Thai lover, you won't leave a dedicated forum like this ...
