I think you have it all wrong there LY. Many men have been going to this place for years and made some life long friendships.

It has been pointed out to me by the Long Awaited Returned One Local Yokul that perhaps I should qualify my generalizing and sarcastic post above, which is probably a good idea. I do work with educated Thais who are a pleasure to work with and whom I consider work friends, comrades in the daily grind. However it is recognized by me that we have essentially different interests and have been socialized very differently--they might think some conversations I would enjoy would be boring, and vice versa. Not merely a language barrier for most people, but a culture barrier. Not impossible for all, but as I implied, for most.
I would only encourage expats and visitors to try to accept and surmount this barrier in any way possible, even if it is merely a one-sided process with only your effort involved, as the rewards of getting to a deeper layer with someone from a different culture are worth it, whatever their relations to you: business associate, employee, etc.
A rose is a rose for us all.

I have a few friends who happen to be bar girls, or hostesses, or lady singers, or, yes, even blow job service providers. I also have friends who are waitresses, or who work in guest relations at major hotels, friends who work in offices, and friends who run their own businesses.
In no cases do I categorize them by their profession. I categorize them by their names, by who they are, and by the terms of our friendship.
Like friends anywhere, some are better friends than others. Some are givers, and some are takers. Some are more properly classified as acquaintances. Some, I do business with. Many, I do not, or have not, for quite some time. Some, I have never nailed.
Let's redefine the terms, for purposes of illustration.
Let's say....that we are all talking about a hot, young librarian. She works at a local library.
For whatever reason, we sometimes have to pay a library fine. The girl has to apply rules, and she has to tell us how much we owe in overdue book fines.
In some cases, she has a little more latitude in interpreting the rules, and she will cut some of us some slack, because we are friends, we are frequent visitors to the library, and we borrow a lot of books.
Others, for whatever reason, do not fall into the same category with her. Is it outlandish that she will interpret the rules a little more stringently for folks with whom she does not have a relationship, and whom she does not know?
Of course, she is going to check a book out to you. If you return the book late, she will enforce a rule, and charge an overdue fine. Whether you pay 500 baht or 700 baht is up to her. Maybe you return the book after closing, and the return date should technically be registered as the next business day. But, she worked late that day, and she does you a favor and she clocks the book back in on the same day, not the next business day. Technically, she bent a rule for you. But you are her friend, and she can do this, so she does.
If you do not like the way that she applies the rules, you can always complain to her boss, or you can go check your books out at a different library, and you can develop a relationship with librarians at that library branch. In the event that you keep your books out longer than is proper, perhaps you can call in a favor with them, and pay a lower fine.
Right?
So on what basis is this librarian "worthless?"

I agree with a lot of what has been written here.
But I think it's too easy to box people up into categories, accoring to their occupation, no matter where they come from or what they do.
This might be due to the fact that I have felt a life-long repulsion when coming across anything resembling a rigid social class system, and that may be my legacy from living in the U.K. for too many years.
I understand the nature of 'networking' and its value, but I also acknowledge the fact that my friend or friends at my local bar, also meet a lot of people from all walks of life, some of whom are very influencial and can open many doors.
ma9's point about the prerogative of the librarian fits.
I do know of many instances where, as barrafish points out, all manner of favours are given to certain people.
Although I would really like this to happen to me at the Star of Light, these range of favours have not be shown to me, except on very few occasions over the years and even then, I felt that the correct recompense was justly due and paid it in full and tipped for the offer.
I have though, on buying rounds of drinks there, been favoured with a few free beers in return and I think that you will find that it any bar, and with any group of friends.

Yes, I've had beers given to me many times in the Star of Light in return for ringing the phallus bell above the bar....but then I usually sit under the bell and it's my head that bangs against it as the lady climaxes me.
But, joking aside, yes, I have had many beers in exchange on a good night or even during the day and not only at times of my ringing the bell above the bar.
I haven't had further favours bestowed upon me, but then I'm only in my early sixties. I live in hope.
As for assumig that a sucking bar, as the girls call it, and its employees are excluded from any form of networking, just because of the nature of their occupation, I can verify that this is not true.
I got my present job some years ago, through an employee there giving me a phone number, besides her own. And my best friend, who came out here with me, was lost to Bangkok and living here, only because he started chatting to a guy who had been blown next to him and it turned out that the guy worked in his field.
He is now based in Hong Kong, in a beautiful apartment overlooking the bay, working for a globally renowned Management Consultancy firm, and continually dabbling his privates in parts of Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong and other places as far afield as Tokyo.
So I personally, wouldn't write off the Star of Light as not being in any networking activities and only as a blow-job bar. To get to other levels, you've got to give a place and people time.
