Phonm Phenn; Pre-booked flight with Thai Air $200.00 visa on arrival take 2 passport photo's and have the form filled out before leaving plane. Little bit of a scramble for visa paid $20 and done, basic but functional Airport. Taxi's out side if not booked just get a ticket from taxi counter $7 to Phonm Phenn everyone drives at a nice easy pace. Pre-booked Hotel but Taxi boy wanted me to go see his Hotel by River maybe should have? But My Hotel more than nice $30 pn including breakfast.

Taxi, Tuk Tuk, and motor taxi everywhere $1/$2 most destinations in PP. Take US dollars with small bill's it's the major currency you get small change in Ria, ATMs are about but never needed one it's hard to spend money here! Hotels and larger establishments do take credit cards I found that Visa more widespread than Master-card (watch out for the surcharge). Maps and getting around there are plenty here but take a 'Lonely Planet' as it has place names in Khmer which is very useful as the Taxi drivers usually don't have a clue where you want to go and can just take you down to the river. Beggars are everywhere but they are very polite and really not a problem more around Wats and tourist traps. The museums and such are ok but nothing too special did enjoy the Royal Palace but lots of backpackers and USA/Eurotrash inappropriately dressed not showing any respect for country (shoes and hats in temples, taking photo's, being loud and dressed like tramps).

Food is excellent all types (Western, Thai, Khmer) and cheap likewise beer rarely paid more than $1 for draft Tiger or Angkor. Found Walkabout, Sharkey's etc not much to write home about decent food but run down bars full of hookers (no bad thing) but really nothing special there are better places to hang out like any bar on or near River front.

Felt safe 95% of the time but do be careful don't walk streets at night plenty of Taxi's around and I always tip the doormen if there are any. Khmer people are fantastically friendly and very polite they don't seem used to Westerners yet often reserved but make the first step with a smile and a few words of Khmer it goes a long way. PP is a super chilled out place and had a fantastic time relaxing taking it easy I hope it stays that way but feel the heavy hand of tourism is here already. Will definitely return but must have a Hotel with a pool as it does get hot and dusty for sure aint swimming in the Mekong.

Details:

One night lost and it's dark took a wrong turn down a dark street ended up in a market tried to get a moto (motorbiketaxi) to take me to Sharkies but no one speaks english or understands me. One young dirty guy all over me like a rash sure he is trying to check for wallet or easy things to grab. This was the only time I felt unsafe this guy was mad or high and giving off very bad vibes, kept on jumping around me and trying to get behind me and that really freaks me out. Kept my eye on him all the time he was smaller than me but looked so freaking dirty I would not want to touch him with a pole. Tried to take charge of the situation telling him "no, no, I'm ok" and engage the other fellows in finding Sharkies mind you if he tried anything which way the the mob go? Maybe sensing my unease or maybe they were just nice guys the gang of moto drivers that I am talking to physically block him from me. They find a guy who can speak english and he tells the first guy I talked to that Sharkies is just around the block to which I insist he takes me right now. They all laugh and wave goodbye and that freaky little f***er is still jumping around eyeing me up as prey. It had my heart beating fast, lesson learnt, no more walking after dark; my Hotel was near Wat Phonm in the North 3 moto's told me be careful here "Gangsters". That is the same place where the Dark room was/is.

Walkabout bar old bar but good beer and food open 24hrs found some decent company in here good crack. Lots of young gals a lot of Vietnamese after a day or two you start to see the difference. I like the Khmer girls very sweet one kept on biting my head and then went into hysterics because it made all the hairs on arm arm stand on end so she would do it again! I kinda got to like it? So after a few tigers we went upstairs $3 for room with shower she was very good and had the longest thickest silkiest bush I have ever seen these ladies dare I say it; have better hair than Thai women!!! She was thrilled with $20 so I don't know what a cheap charlie can get away with?

Sharkies much the same big old full of Vietnamese but what a result there caught a cutie of a bar manager very worth it what a sweet angle funny charming enough english to have a decent conversation. So begins another beautiful love story not to be told here!

Now the guys I met there were hooking up all over the place even getting a full service at the barbers! One guy was staying at the Walkabout bar in the short time rooms what total dedication? No gogo's that I could find but went to a disco called the dark room; now I know what goes on in darkrooms in Amsterdam so I was very curious and somewhat nervous on entering. Well the dark room is, well, to bloody dark for this old bugger! Could not see a bloody thing and the music was crap yep it's a disco and I'm a grumpy old man. Got chatting with some gals there who were just fishing for drinks I had the strongest Bacardi & Coke ever for $2 and it was a tall drink. On the dance floor all the guys were dancing together (weird) one local guy came to talk to me (I was the only white boy in there) after the normal pleasantries he asks "excuse me do you like ladies?" "why yes I reply". He's off, now is the darkroom a gay bar? I had enough and did'nt want to find out one way or other funny they had a lot of security outside and inside any way regular bar just down from it "you want lady" oh jeeze sometimes it's just too much. Off to hotel to sleep alone. At Hotel Asian gentleman with nice female partner wishes me "happy new year" I return the complement then look away as we are in the elevator. This seems to be the cue for his lady friend to start laughing in the most theatrical way obviously at me (well there are only three of us in the elevator). Then the guy joins in WTF? "Ha, ha," he says, "You sleep alone!" And they both dissolve into hysterics! Ahhh well vive la culture clash, I was very glad to get out of that lift. I spent 7 days in PP and unless you want to bang cheap Viet pussy all day it's more than enough I found it hot as hell and dry and dusty that's why the bars down by the river one or two stories up are the best place to hang, breeze, no beggars good food and booze. Had a sniff all the time there and maybe a small fever slowed me down a bit but did enjoy the place a super chilled laid back city with just about everything you could want but next time I would pay more and get a Hotel with a pool to chill and cool off in the afternoon.

bingo629, I would hazzard a guess that the people in the elevator were stoned, maybe on happy pizza. Great FR, enjoyed reading. Keep it up.

My first visit to PP I stayed at Flamingos and came to the same conclusion that the riverside area is the place to stay. Also found that the better looking ladies are in the riverside establishments.

So on my next visit I stayed at the The Tonle Sap Guest House & Pickled Parrot Pub, no swimming pool. See my FR: http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=11&topic=605&start=0

HI all, been to PP several times I like the value for money I can get from this town, accommodation is cheap, you can get a desent room at a guest house from say 6 US a nite (all girl friendly too) to a flash one say at the flamingos for 20 US and more if your budget allows. Moto taxi for a short ride u can get for a 1000 reel thats about 50cents US ( more for night time) I like Sharky,s Bar, and walkabout's never checked out any other bars or clubs. The Girls are friendly and you can negotiate with them from 5 US and up. If you have more time,go to the town of Sihanoukville on the coast,is a great part of Cambodia, beaches are clean and locals easy go in, I hear theres even a casino there now.

Will definitely be going back to Cambodia

Walkabout is nothing to write home about as gals are mostly below average (sometimes there may be 1-2 thats ok). Only upside to this place is the always open policy so could come and check out for beer or gals anytime.

Yes, Sihanoukville have 2 casino near the Victory beach area, but its also nothing to write home about as they are ALL machine operated (even the roulette table) --gets boring after 10min.

Hey Bingo,
Did your RT flight start from BKK as the $200 fare seems a bit steep for the 1 hour flight to PP.
