Street Bars are an interesting alternative to what is available in Cowboy, Nana and Patpong. In some ways similar to the Beer Bars that dot Bangkok, Street Bars have a flavor all their own.
Street Bars are almost always temporary structures. Consisting of as little as a single movable cart to more elaborate structures complete with tables and chairs, they seem to pop up like mushrooms after a rain. Usually they start appearing after dark (sometimes not opening until 1am or later), although some are set up by 2pm or even earlier. Some close as early as 2am. Others stay open until the morning street vendors set up shop.
Koolbreez took me on a tour of some of the local Street Bars and provided some of the information herein.
There are quite a number of them along the odd side of Sukhumvit, stretching from Soi 3 to the Asoke BTS and beyond. Sukhumvit Soi 20 has them. I would guess that many places throughout Bangkok boast their own set of temporary bars. Those who visit Soi Cowboy already know about the ones set up late at night. I believe they are around Nana as well.
I don't know the financial aspects of Street Bars well. I have been told that they have to pay the local mafia for sidewalk rental space at a rate of 5,000bt/month or more, payable daily in some cases. There is also tea money due to the local police, perhaps 500bt/week or more. There may be other "business expenses" as well.
Despite this, Street Bars can be very inexpensive for the customer. We visited one on Sukhumvit Soi 20, about 100 meters into the Soi on the left hand side as you walk from Sukhumvit. As we sat down around 8:30pm there were already 5 other customers. More joined as the night progressed. There were at least 6 bar girls as well as 2 bartenders. No real stunners in the group, although one of the girls came from Afterskool and is quite pleasant to look at.
Soft drinks were 30bt. Beer was 70bt. LDs were 120bt. The bar girls were good to go. 500bt bar fine and 2,000bt ST. Probably could negotiate the price.
Obviously no air con, but some have fans and usually you would be there late at night. Also there is no loud music, so you can have a conversation if you wish. Some have arraignments for access to modern toilet facilities. Others point you to the nearest alley.
Not all Street Bars have bar girls associated with them. Some, especially on lower Sukhumvit, have girls from Nana who are still looking for a customer once their bar closes for the evening. No bar fine, and you just negotiate like you would any other freelancer. A Street Bar might give you a better opportunity to interview the potential candidate before the price/time/services discussion takes place.
All in all, these places could be an interesting alternative from time to time.

Just a side note, when I first started hunting after hours at the street bars, and restaurants there was quite a bit of walk by traffic all night compared to now.
This is the venue most affected by the downturn in tourist counts. I have seen a steady decline in the number of people up late in the last 4 years, with it really being noticable during the demonstrations in 2010. The imposed curfew meant no business for 18 days in one month. After that the numbers just haven't returned to where they were before 2010.
The Democrat's government was the biggest recent boom for the late night street scene because they allowed them to stay open at their discretion. Thaksin's government forced them to close by 3:30am, giving most less than 3 hours to make their living.
Now they can again stay open at their descretion, but the number of people staying up late to shop (for food, drink, and women), and have fun is way down. With the high season just ending, and talking to friends business was about 1/5 of what it should be along lower Sukhumvit. Lots of people were layed off, and most now working for the owners are just doing it for tips, and an occasional LT as a freelancer. Turnover in workers is very high right now.
Business is so bad the mafia has started collecting fees on a daily basis instead of just monthly because lots of the spaces don't make it the full month.
All but one of the fortune tellers out of 15 are gone, and the one still there is not a regular business, just operating on a hit or miss basis with no lease agreement for space.
There are stretches of sidewalk completely devoid of vendors now. This was never the case before the demonstrations.

My point of view: the sooner Bangkok can get rid of all those night life eye-sores, be it Soi Cowboy, Nana or street bars and vendors, the better it will be. The worst sort of sex tourists - equally the worst eye, ear and mind sores - would stop crowding the Thai aircrafts to the the relief of disgusted cabin crews. Bangkok and Thailand will retain its charm and sex appeal but with more grace and style, adopting to another type of - not sex tourists - but erotic sensualists, like it might have been a very long time ago before the anal regressive porno industry poisoned peoples sex preferences, Or let the Japanese take over, at least they are less noisy and smelly than drunk Westerners. And I prefer the Thermae to most Westerner hang-outs.
Btw people drink too much alcohol. It's a downer, especially regarding sex and it makes us incredibly stupid.

I'm a member of a night life forum - which maybe I shouldn't have entered because it seems irreversible - since I love night life (yes, I like sex too, which is why you will never find me indulging in that mindless street bar drinking) Re flights from Narita: as I said, the Japanese might preferably take over the Bangkok nightlife (which they are actually doing) Try a flight from a Euoropean capital and you'll see a difference.
But in a way you are right, so I should try to be more precise. It's the massive collectivity of "sex
tourists" that is a pollution. Every one of them is an individual of course, but somehow this individuality is subdued when he puts his (often voluminous) gluteus maximus in that plane seat.
And it's the massive dull, bland and soulless setup of the bar industry as a whole that is such an eye sore. Just take a walk through Soi Cowboy on a sunny April afternoon and you will experience the immense ugliness and pathos of the whole thing. Might have been better a long time ago but I am not going into that discussion, adhering to my basic principle: Never become one of those Bangkok old hands!

I'd go along at 2am or so in the morning & find a table with two decent lookers & ask if I could sit down.
I know I'll end up paying, but many times I got both gals to come back with me after their meal.
