Erike : dont spoil your time trying to aware this bunch of guys about their right to privacy, you loose your time...

When I read replies like "if you dont have something to hide then why do you care" then I think Big Brother has done a good job removing their brains...
Hope they live long enought to realise how stoopid they were...

Why do you insist on 'privacy' in a place that is 'public'?

When you move around and about in public spaces, you have absolutely NO right to implied or direct privacy -- you never had -- that's why it is called 'public'. Walking on a street, inside a public locale (ever wonder why it's called a 'pub'), on government property, or anywhere else where your privacy is not an implied given.

You *DO* have a rigt to privacy inside of your house, your apartment, a dwelling unit you temporarily rent (hotel, ST room), though there as well it is your responsibiity to assure your own privacy, when needed (whatever a public person can see through your windows is deemed 'public', hence you are required to pull the curtains to assure your privacy).

You can choose to place priority on living in paranoid fear of 'Big Brother', or you can decide to enjoy your life, while being aware that you have no privacy IN PUBLIC!

MTB in Soi Eric has the cam there and I'm sure many members of Phuket-info forum love to be able to see what is going on at the bar that subsidises the forum.

It's on a free website, that anyone going on there can see.

If it was on some kind of pay site to show "Thai Bargirls in action" one might have some reason to be upset.
being on the web is just an expansion of who can see what shenagins you get up to there.

After all, plenty of folks around you in the bar/Soi see you in action, it's not like the girls bring hidden cams with them into yopur hotel room.

Uhm... yeah, but usually most of these guys' wives and girlfriends aren't in that bar...

I agree with most posters here.
Civil liberties and the right to privacy has been eroded over the last 20 odd years by the waves of security needs, policing surveillance techniques, and the attack on the liberties of film stars, music bands, singers and 'public figures' by the papparazzi who are employed in the jaws of a hungry mass media manipulating monster.

I left the U.K. in the mid-90's when the number of CCTV and public surveilance cameras amounted in the land to over 3 million. Speed trap cameras, shopping mall security, traffic control, bank, shop, police, custom offices, ceremonial occasions and transport security and flow all had set their needs against what was cherished as 'personal privacy'.

But the urgency to preserve that, was washed away for most people by the fear of terrorist action and gang violence which over the years had mounted to devastating proportions.

And at the time the development of technology offered some sort of bulwark or breakwater against this rising tide.

And parks, shopping malls and roads and streets are public places. If we are uncomfortable with being seen in those places, then it says something about our own morality and life-style than anything else.

If you are doing something illegal, cheating on someone or misbehaving in some way, then I understand your discomfort.

But I would think that the photographic attempts to track and keep tabs on public nuisances, football mobs, gangs and terrorists far outway that discomfort, even if it is only that you value your friends and family and wish them and yourself to be able to safely go about your daily life.

Anyone who has been trapped in a two hour traffc jam in any city, let alone Bangkok, would want to try some way of easing this problem of traffic congestion

A bar or restaurant or hotel is not a public place. But neither is it a private place. It is not even a semi-private place. it is a semi-public place at least in the eyes of the law, if not your personal interpretation.

So long as the presence of cameras and their use and intention are advertised for all to clearly see, then one should have no complaint. You have the choice of entering the place or not.

You have the choice to exceed the speed limit, but not the legal right.

You choose to behave in certain ways in places that are not completely private and personal. That is your prerogative. But it opens your actions to consequences.

The presence of secretly placed cameras is an infringement of civil rights.

The secretly broadcast web-cam images is also an infringement. If not secret, but advertised for all to know, then it is not.

However, secretly placed or not, the issue of the addition of sound raises an outcry from most sensible people, I would think.

If I have fun in a bar, go-go bar, bj bar, massage parlour main concourse and sitting area, an open-air restaurant, mildly or otherwise,I should be comfortable with that, so long as I have been made known of its level of seclusion.

It's been my choice whether I have entered that establishment in an intoxicated state or not. If I feel uncomfortable about it, then I must reflect on why I might feel fear or guilt.

Placing a camera, its presence known or not in a private and personal place, your home. apartment, hotel suite, massage room, or Eden's VIP suite, is an infringement, as they are clearly designated private places and are made known as such.

Where your personal choice of behaviour over-laps and runs contrary to the curent social expectations and 'norms' of the public and semi-public places you find yourself in, is your problem since you have chosen to do so in a place that is not strictly private and personal to you.

But I must sincerely assure everyone on this forum, that no-one, defintely no-one, would buy a DVD or buy into any web-site that had my butt or any other of my body parts on it.

Count your blessings.

Have a good day everyone, and go and have a good time, without having to look over your shoulder in fear too often. It must be very wearing.

The feeling of what we call freedom, limited by its own defintion, is such a beautiful thing. Too valuable for humanity to surround it with guilt or fear.

And if Big Brother over-steps the mark, we generally bring him down.

The trouble is, it takes so long to do that sometimes, mainly because in history we have relinquished too much power for the sake of good (?) 'government'.

Everything costs.

And eventually we all pay with our lives......hopefully much, much later on down the road.
