We all know the real reason why Yanks feign disinterest in the big global sports (football, rugby, cricket, Grand Prix etc etc),

Well Stueyb, you caught the 'mericans this time.

They may not be the best at every sport, but they play damn near all of them to some degree.

But what they do lead the world in is Sports Promotion. Do you really think the world cup would have become this big if it were not for US TV industry and sports marketering companies showing the way with US baseball, football and basketball? Pele went to the US to play for one reason... BIG DOUGH!

Anyway, thank God the bars are open during the long weekend and places like Glow have alternative programming available

I notice quite a few American companies spending major bucks to sponsor Worldcup 2006. It has been reported Anheuser-Busch paid $47 million to be the official Worldcup 2006 Beer.

The 15 Official Partners of the 2006 FIFA World CupTM are: adidas, Anheuser-Busch, Avaya, Coca-Cola, Continental, Deutsche Telekom, Emirates, Fujifilm, Gillette, Hyundai, MasterCard, McDonald’s, Philips, Toshiba and Yahoo!.

This doesn't appear to show disinterest in my book.

Just to put the record straight to those who are obviously confused in this string (are you American by any chance ?). The sport you refer to as 'soccer' is not called 'soccer' its called 'football' because its played with a foot kicking a ball, and it was invented before your version of 'football' so we are right to claim the name 'football' for our sport. What you call 'football' is really a bunch of morons running into each other wearing tights, helmets and armour plating. This has nothing to do with football whatsoever. You've got it SO wrong. And don't get me started on the 'World Series' nonsense !

"Soccer"/"football" is also played with the head to hit the ball. Commonly called a "header".

So why not call it Headerball or Headball? Hummm.......or is that too gay? 5555!

was just watching footage of the King's coronation, from back in 1946

most footage is in black & white

but oddly enough, the outdoor scenes have been colorized

surely there weren't color video recorders in 46, since colorized video didn't come about until the late 60s

I think the King was only 19 when he took his new role, but that would make him 79 today, wow

I saw that, some fascinating footage.

Sadly it was spoiled by some whining Pommie football supporters annoyed that Thai TV pulled the first 30 minutes of their World Cup opener to honour His Majesty.

the other 60 minutes were just dull.....and they think they gonna win?

We are having dinner this evening with a Thai wife and her Yank husband along with some other folks and will be watching the festivities on Thai TV (which they can get via satellite).

We also attended a gala at the Thai Embassy in Riyadh a couple of weeks ago in celebration of the 60th year.

It is a big deal. MUCH larger than a silly "headerball" game. (Thanks, CalEden)

I will, again, not be watching the world cup. Has the US played yet?

Color footage was most likely originally shot on film and then later transferred to video.

Earliest color TV was developed in 1951 with CBS shooting and Ed Sullivan show.... but no one could watch it on a B/W TV. 1953 came with RCA and NBC using different system that was adopted by US as standard.

USA didn't play yet... there was another group of players dressed in USA uniforms that showed up and forgot to try to score!!
