IMHO we are already being tracked and recorded but it is fragmented and currently (I say currently) technology does not exist to co-ordinate all the information that is gathered on each of us each day and most of it is disgarded due simply to $$$ issues.....an hour into a normal work day and I have already been "recorded" dozens of times...my mobile phone moves from "cell" to "cell" on the phone network showing that I am on the move...the traffic cameras on the freeway have "seen" my car at two dozen locations before the security camera "sees" me at the front door of the office...did I use the ATM, buy fuel for the car, stop at the 7/11, travel on an electronic tollway or arm my security system before I left home...if so then add a couple of dozen more times that Big Brother has "seen" me today and knows what I am up to....the only thing that keeps my so-called "privacy" safe is that this information is stored in a thousand different places by a hundred different groups.
On the general issue of privacy, were I to roam the streets tonight and peer with x-ray vision through the curtains of my neighbours houses I would invariably see only normal families doing normal family things. These people have nothing to hide but they still close the curtains at night. IMHO it is normal to seek privacy and normal to seek to prevent others from invading it. Just my two cents worth - now back to work cause somewhere the amount of time I have spent on the internet and not doing my work has been "seen". Enjoy.

Again, I will say the level of this discussion show that BKKTonite members prove a more intelectual approach to this question. In phuket-info.com I got mostly "are you stupid"-responses when posting a similar topic.
Here, even the persons that do not agree with me, make an intellectual argument. Great!
To make a final (yea, right) argument:
You have to see beyond what is available today.
1. I saw some argument saying that: If they put up a sign saying that there is a webcam in the bar (or whatever), then you have a choice. Well, in the future ther could be signs like this, like, EVERYWHERE. What choice do that leave for me?
2. Another argument: The webcam just show an overview, and no face can be recognised. Well, according to Moores law, in a year or two you would be able to count the freckles on my face.
3. There are already many "Big Brother" trackings out there, like credit cards, security cams etc... Well, yes, that is of some concern. But that is still more private (I really hope they keep their data for themselve) than any public webcam broadcasting on a public web address.

In answer to your points:
1 Yes, they could be everywhere but there again might not be, particularly in areas where the customer might not wish to be seen. I'm sure there will always be plenty of bars where they value the discretion of the custommer.
I'm also sure Nicke the owner of the Mai Thai bar only has the webcam there to support his website phuket-info.com and so I'm not surpised that you didn't get much creative debate on this subject on his site.
2 Having seen the (lack of) quality of girls at the Mai Thai bar I can assure you that it would be very bad for business to put a better quality webcam in there.
3 The data collected by these other sources is potentially far more dangerous as that info is much easier to track and often relates to far more sensitive information such as finances etc.
Even with the advent of better quality webcams I don't see the problem. Somebody can click on the link and watch me have a beer in the bar. So what? Anyone can also walk down soi Eric and watch me have a drink in the bar too. As long as I'm not up to any nefarious activity (and of course I never would be), I shouldn't have any concerns.
