My Thai GF who has a professional job, fantastic education, conservative family etc. becomes a little distressed when treated like a hooker by hotel staff, even though she can never stay the night. ÝLuckily thus far in my regular hotel (Conrad) they have never asked to see ID or anything in the lobby, but they have given her strange looks, and were once quite rude to her in Liu the chinese restaurant (despite her coming striaght from work and still being dressed in her business suit). Now I realise to an extent this is probably par for the course for a Thai/Farang relationship and that people naturally make rather cynical assumptions. ÝMy choice of hotel and the way I deal with them is however within my control and I would welcome any tips or advice. Ý In theory the Conrad should treat me well I am a Diamond tier frequent guest and I spend a lot of money there, but this obviously wasnt the case with her, which makes me wonder whether I should switch accomodation for subsequent stays. Also would it make any difference if I registered her as a guest when I check in? ÝShe obviously wont be staying with me (given the family background) but will be visiting frequently. Hope this is posted in the right place, sometimes the borderlines between the topics here are a little grey.

Normaly, I (and i guess some others also) would say UTFSE. However, I am having a really nice day today, getting ready and packing my stuff for LOS. Ý Therefore, I would respectfully suggest that you use the search engine. You will see that this topic has been covered many times and there is some up to date into to be gleaned from this source. If I were in your position, I would march (not walk) up to the front desk and create all sorts of shit to embarrass the manager and all the staff involved. Ý But that's just me on a bad day. Ý f_ck em all, move ASAP. TC. I am going to love this place even more .

Think it goes thru the minds of certain staff members, "i'm slaving away all month for about what this TG is probably getting a night" - hence the odd one may look a little pissed off, - also, PLEASE dont make exceptions, I get tired of daily emails stating 'She is not a bar girl" - as tho this makes any difference, apart from perhaps being better educated and speaking a higher class of Thai, by and large I have found little difference in a TGs moods/attitude/sense of values/LOYALTY, regardless of her background. [ yeh TC, Ive stuffed up my back, so having a bad day also! - PM me when you get to Bkk ]

Thanks for the feedback chaps, yea I know I should UTFSE, but the FSE can be a bit of a blunt instrument at times so I appreciate the constructive responses. TPE I didnt mean to suggest that a GTG was any different in terms of loyalty etc. from A BG I made the distinction only because the whole reason for my post was that she has a real complex about being thought of as a BG, and because of her families values (and I have had to meet them in order to spend time with her) she is unable to spend time overnight with me, which might have some relevance to registering her as a guest. No disrespect was intended (and I personally have never a distinction, perhaps because my previous experiences have been exclusively with BGs & FLs). ÝHope your back gets better soon. Cheers guys

IMHO as soon as someone treated my gf in a way I didn't like I would call the manager of the resturant over to my table and I'd let him know that I wasn't pleased with how my gf was treated. I wouldn't get mad and raise my voice as this is counter-productive. I would also make the manager of the hotel aware of what is going on. I would have my diamond card laying on the counter so he can see I'm a repeat guest. The manager will take care of this and the staff will treat your gf right.

I have stayed at The JW Marriott heaps of times in Bangkok and always found that my Ýlasses are treated with considerable politeness in the hotel's restaurants. Not so, when I used to stay at the Regent. The Shangri-la was OK, but a lass would attract a good many stares from the tour groups which inhabit Ýthe Shang. P.S. The JW Marriot's ÝNew York Steak House is rated one of the very best in Ý Thailand.

Bucksfun I totally understand what you are saying. My friend is much the same way. She has a very good position and has never been even close to the night scene. The problems with hotels and such can be real or just in her mind. My lady is absolutely paranoid about perception. When she comes to the hotel to meet me she is dressed in her business suit and looks to be the ultimate business professional. When we go out she is worried that people will think that she is a P4P girl, because she is quite sexy looking but doesn't dress or act that way in public. When she leaves the hotel, she does not want to get a taxi at the hotel, because she is afraid the driver will think that she is a hooker. She will have me walk her down the street and help her flag a taxi. Image is critical. She doesn't want to hold hands in public-afraid of what people might think. She is a classy lady-and a tigeress Learn to live with it-and enjoy it

If you are going to spend that kind of money for a hotel, use the Sheraton Grande, great location and they are very guest friendly .. I have been there many times and never been questioned with my Thai g/f .. also, noted many other guests in the restaurants that seemed to have no problems.. then again, you and your g/f may be too sensitive??? Why don't you buy a condo and then you won't have to deal with this.. it is cheaper in the long run than expensive hotels and much nicer to have a place that is like "home" ... I am so glad that I bought a place there.. only carry a suitcase for books and a few other minor things..

A girl friendly hotel is defined as a hotel that does not charge extra for guests that stay the night. They may or may not ask for ids. But any hotel has the ìrightî to charge for double occupancy if you registered as a single, even in the US. The attitude of individual employees who work for the hotel may vary, regardless of whether they charge extra for guests. But the more frequently it occurs (a Farang with a young Thai woman in their restaurants, lobby, etc) the less likely they will be outwardly offended by it. Personally I think the best solution is a serviced apartment, where itís none of their business whom you invite into your room.

Thanks a lot guys Having tried to use the FSE I dont seem to get much from previous posts apart from GF places, which isnt quite the same thing at all. ÝI think loquint sees where I am coming from here. Ultimately an expereience in any place is dependant upon the worst member of staff there, and unfortunately the incident in the restaurant really ruined the occasion for both of us. ÝSince by this time we had been seeing each other for a while and it was the first time she had been to my hotel, this was very bad news indeed and changed the shape of what I intended to happen that night. Fortunately things went OK thereafter and I didnt encounter any particular problems with the Hotel, but my query was really about possible strategies to pre-empt similar situations occurring in the future. ÝMy GF and I have had long chats about where I should stay in the future, my problem is I like the Conrad, they treat me very well (on the whole), the location (for me) is excellent and I am used to the business facilities, for them it is a very short sighted thing to p*** off my gf in this way. ÝI had thought about the Banyan Tree, Regent or Sukothai for my next trip (next month), but there is no guarantee that a similar situation wouldnt occur, and at least my frequent guest status gives me leverage in Hilton group hotels. Buying a condo is possibly a longer term option, my next trip will probably be my last hotel stay for a while, since in future I am likely to use serviced apartments (since I am planning to take a 6-8 month break in BKK early next year, learning thai and seeing how things develop with my gf and I). I dont particularly fancy the suk road locations since they are a little near the nightlife scene for my temptation and for her comfort (although I am also a high tier Starwood frequent guest). Loquint - I would really like to share more of your experiences to maybe learn how to deal better with a situation which is still quite new to me. ÝI would appreciate it if you could PM me some time to discuss more privately. As to the question of are we being too sensitive, I understand I think why she feels the way she does and my sensitivity to the situation comes from trying to avoid causing her distress. Cheers Bucks
